Europe mid-year / Dave Douglas

Hey folks, Probably a bit early for this, but does anyone know of any Zorn-related or similar artists who have tours planned in Europe in the middle of the year? I'm planning to be there July-August, wouldn't mind catching some interesting music... Also, any thoughts on the latest Dave Douglas 'Strange Liberation' (i.e. the second quintet album, with Bill Frisell guesting on some tracks)? From the little I've listened to it, seems like it's a solid album, but I must admit I'm tiring a bit of Dave's current jazz/Miles/Blue Note thing - looking forward to hearing something new. As for the Frisell guest-spot, it seems like it should be a perfect match, but to me the results aren't quite so convincing - eg. 'The Frisell Dream' sounded far better when I saw the Quintet live a little while ago... but hey, I've only heard good things about this album so maybe it's just me! Julian.

Duke and Jungle Music

Most essential, personally and by general consensus, is his stuff with the so-called Webster/Blanton band, from the late 30s to early 40s. I think there's a two-disc set out called Duke Ellington, The Webster/Blanton Band, or years, or maybe the Blanton/Webster band or years. ... Terrific stuff.... But especially since you are interested in the jungle music, why not spend $93 and get the complete 1924-1947? "The Duke: Edward Kennedy Ellington" (History), 40 CD box set. CDuniverse.com and elsewhere. Rafael queried: Someone was talking about Duke development towards what was called in the 30's as jungle music. I used to listen to that when I was a child and it was a thrill, but I haven't any of his recordings of that period. Suggestions ? (good compilations or similar) Talking about Marion Brown, I love "why not" and i haven't heard to three for shepp but I'd like to. What about "Porto Novo"? Cheers Rafael

I really liked the album "300" with Wayne Horvitz and Kenny Wollesen. That trio was just amazing live -- I saw them at the Knitting Factory festival. You didn't know whether to start head-banging or just levitate. Such a shame they didn't get to play together more.
