I was surprised the other night when Keep the River on Your Right came on the IFC channel, about Tobias Schneebaum, who lived and loved among the cannibals of Borneo, and Steve Bernstein came up as "Music by". I guess I better get the DVD and extract the music, because I don't think there's a soundtrack album. The music was great - I couldn't help thinking it was a little like Fishing with John... dan

Having visited the Rotterdam Film Festival just a few days ago, one trend amongst East-Asian cinema appears to be the total absence of a soundtrack (other than diegetic sound, that is). It was shown on Arte not too long ago, so at least it is still out there and someone is realizing its importance. I doubt whether anyone in Argentina will bother to restore it, as the government has tried for years to suppress it. Frankco

Well, if you really don't think "Raumpatrouille" is excellent, you can give up listening to any of his other work. "Raumpatrouille" is definitely much, much better than anything else he has done. What is so great about it is its combination of laid-back, cool tunes, which suddenly erupt into these violent, dissonant soundblasts. This is something that, in that days and age, could really only be done in the soundtrack medium, which has its own rules quite different from those of both the pop and the avant-garde world. Nowadays most soundtracks are either the John Williams type of orchestral bullshit, or the compilation type which collects some dumb tracks by nu metal bands. Pay attention to the scene where the mute servant pulls a sleigh through the snow - the music for that scene is just so "Disco Volante"-like. Now that we're on the subject of movies, has anyone seen the 1969 Argentinian movie "Invasion", scripted by Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares? I would really be interested to see this movie (with English subtitles), but I don't know whether it has ever been released. Frankco

Hi, I'm wondering if this has already been discussed, I hope no. Lately, I have seen amazing japanese films with delightful music. I'm wondering what do you think of the soundtracks genre and your favorite albums or composers. In case of Morricone I purchased sometime ago il malamondo/la tarantola del ventre nero. The first soundtrack was ok but I loved much more la tarantola. I also like Krzysztof Komeda, the stuff on tzadik by Ribot ( I'm going to buy Ikue Mori B/Side, what about other filmworks to pick up on tzadik?), Nino Rota or Jerry Goldsmith's Chinatown.
