Hi Arthur, First of all, anti-semitism is not a big issue here except for a few radical islamists about whom nobody cares. It was never thought that the bombings were planned inside the country... At the concert, Zorn was in a very happy and relaxed mode. He did not talk much and did not mention any politics. (Although most of the artists coming from the US, declare their anti-Bush and anti war statements here...) The house was not sold out, but about 4/5 full with an enthusiastic crowd. The performance was mind blowing but short (a little more than an hour). Even after the show, he was very kind and interested to sign more than thirty of my albums, and that was something I did not expect regarding his sometimes nervous attitude. I'm kind of curious how something like an Electric Masada concert is recieved there, concidering it's not more than a few months ago synagogues were bombed and so on. Good Morning !! This sounded like it was time well spent listening to some fun music !! I must admit to enjoying Michael Vatcher the (2) times I've seen him @ the Kerrytown Concerthouse in Ann Arbor Michigan ( usa) Wether it was at a ICP show or more recently with M. Moore's Available Jelly. I also saw Michael Moore do a show of mostly Dylan Tunes and found that show to be extremely moving ! Yesterday I saw a brilliant beautiful performance by the following ensemble (under the name 'fables') Mola Sylla: voice, m'bira, kongoma, xalam / Michael Vatcher: percussion, drums / Xavier Charles: klarinet / Andy Moore: el. guitar/ Luc Ex: el. bas >From beautiful free improvisation passages the music flowed perfectly into typical energetic The Ex-like rhythms with Charles blowing long vibrating clarinet-sounds. Sylla was quite sparing but giving the concert sometimes an 'an african' touch. I think they played semi-compositions. There must have been some sort of repetition sessions or something. Hello there, There's an interesting and growing scene here in Turkey, mostly fueled by Pozitif, a concert and festival production company and also a label manager...(Doublemoon). Every October, we have Akbank Jazz Festival which features non-mainstream jazzers (Zorn played three times) and in July, there's Istanbul Jazz Festival which mainly features widely known musicians... Also we have a club called Babylon, which is also run by Pozitif guys, where lots of cool gigs have been made... The SCG are one of those bands that, if you listen to the wrong record, you'll never listen to them again. I can't say I am a SCG expert (even though I have about 20 of their releases), but the ones I would recommend are: * Torch of the Mystics - this is the instant classic SCG album. It seems to be everybody's favorite, and rightly so. * Bright Surroundings Dark Beginnings - this one focuses on long, Middle-East flavored instrumental jams. I see it's recently been re-issued on CD. * Carnival Folklore Resurrection Series - typical hit-or-miss series of archive and live recordings, field recordings, etc. There are 12 volumes in this series now (#11/#12 via mail-order only, in a ltd.ed. of 400 copies). The ones to get are "The Dreamy Draw" (#2), "Libyan Dream" (#7) and "High Asia/Lo Pacific" (#9/#10). Eyvind Kang appears on "330,003 Cross-Dressers from Beyond the Rig Veda", which I haven't heard yet (unfortunately). He also appears on a few tracks on the "Box of Chameleons" 3CD, if I'm not mistaken. Apart from the Girls' own releases, you should definitely get your hands on some of the stuff they are releasing in the Sublime Frequencies series. They've released 7 CDs and 3 DVDs released in the space of three months. I would definitely recommend "Night Recordings from Bali", which is a great collection of gamelan, kecak, and field recordings, and the absolutely incredible "Princess Nicotine", probably some of the most insane music you will ever hear. I own the original vinyl album and played some of it at a Fantomas show in Eindhoven to the utter delight of Mike Patton. >From what I've heard, the real gem in the series so far is the "Nat Pwe" DVD, but I haven't seen that one yet. I just saw that the upcomming Einstuerzende Neubauten tour will end in Turkey and I rembered that I've noticed before, that it seems like more and more interesting musicians play in Turkey: Electric Masada, Melt Banana, Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot Mystery Trio, ICP Orchestra and several others comes to mind from the last year or two. Is there something new going on here or did I just first realise it now? Hello I just recently found the cd called Product Music. It is a bunch of song commercials about everything from fritos to faucets. I also got the cd of all the coca cola jingles. I seem to have found a new interests. Does anyone know of any other releases along the same lines? Someone told me that there was a disc of pepsi jingles.
