I had the chance to see Chris Speeds Yeah No Ensemble last monday. After listening to the three great available recordings of the band over the last couple of years I've been really waiting to see this band. Chris Speed and Cuong Vu shared some improvisations in a masada style (different context though) with the band behind them. Ted Reichman added another color to the concept and this made the music dense in a positive way. I think Chris Speed developed a quite unique approach with this music, simple sounding lovely melodies burst into group improvisations. Jim Blacks rocks the drums and delivers a strong drive and yet another percussive color to the music. I saw Vu with is own trio last year and my impression is that he brought a lot of his style (those long anthem like trumpet lines) into Speeds band. Skuli on bass is a perfect match, the sometimes minimalistic electric bass sounds very appropriate. Catch them if you can. I just received a copy of DDs Moving Portrait, which is a fine and enjoyable jazz record and has some nice Joni Mitchell cover versions. As other avant CDs (like ribots first solo record many others) this one comes from japan and has a extra sheet with liner notes in japanese. As my japanese is very poor (in fact I don't know anything) I can't read it. Does anyone know where I could read these notes in english, maybe somewhere on the net. They must be available. thanks martin

Duke and jungle music

Someone was talking about Duke development towards what was called in the 30's as jungle music. I used to listen to that when I was a child and it was a thrill, but I haven't any of his recordings of that period. Suggestions ? (good compilations or similar) Talking about Marion Brown, I love "why not" and i haven't heard to three for shepp but I'd like to. What about "Porto Novo"? Except for Eno's Discreet Music, none of the Obscure titles have been reissued. Last year on the internet, I happened across a label (I forget which; *not* Rhino) that specializes in re-releasing out-of-print titles. I wrote to them about re-issuing the Obscure catalog and was told that whoever holds the rights to that catalog (would that be EG Records?) refuses to let them be re-issued. Which is a shame, because, for one, Bryar's The Sinking of the Titanic is absolutely great. Neither the title track nor "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" are available in their originally scored form. Too bad. I like Tom Waits, but his caterwauling on "Jesus" fucks up a good tune. If anybody can get this series re-issued please do. As it happens, I just sold my Obscure collection (8 of the original 10 releases) to a local used-record store today. *sigh* Tom

Masada ST

Hi, I received some new Tzadiks today. After listening to the Masada String Trio live album from last September and after so much discussion/argument about it, I must admit it's quite impressive, probably the best MST I've heard to date. A great performance. By the way, the next four releases in the series will be: Zorn/Graves, Locus Solus, Masada Quartet and Hemophiliac (in this order). Bobby Previte and Charlie Hunter

Just caught the last night of Previte's UK tour. Fantastic programming, the first part of the evening was a full performance of the 23 Constellations of Joan Miro (on Tzadik) the second set was billed as Previte with Charlie Hunter and DJ Logic but Christian Muthspiel, who conducted the first half, sat in on trombone as well. The live performance of the Miro piece was stunning. Each piece was introduced by projected words from Miro and then the painting which faded just as the music started. (Previte has said that he did not show the picture during the playing to avoid the audience making direct links. I find this a bit patronising and would have enjoyed having the picture there as the music played just as you can with the CD.) The ensemble was more or less the same as on the disc and they played like demons. That music sounds so hard to play. Most of it is written but that doesn't stop Lew Soloff letting rip on a couple of occasions. I think Soloff deserves more contemporary appreciation. With Ralph Alessi, Zena Parkin and Wayne Horvitz in the band I was in heaven. I must go back to the recording to see how much it has changed. The total contrast of the second half was heightened by the fact that it was not a run through of the new Red Dog/Tango Leader CD. A few of the themes appeared but it was a completely improvised organic piece lasting just short of an hour. Hunter remained mainly rhythmic leaving a lot space for Previte's drums (which trigger samples and effects) and DJ Logic. But it was Muthspiel who was the revelation. I don't know anything about this guy but he sure can play. After a very quiet opening they hit a groove and when he came in it, once again, had that Miles early seventies feel, a few minutes later I could hear Can with the trombone tapping out beats with Previte and DJ Logic. Later there was room for a little Blue Note grooving. Some sections were too long with nobody ready to call a change but overall a great band. A fantastic night in Bristol. You're looking for Yoshida's other band KOENJI HYAKKEI. It's far better than "Symphonica", which I concider one of the lesser Ruins albums, indeed. The best one is "Second" (1997, God Mountain GMCD-027), but unfortunately it's kind of difficult to find these days. A very similiar band is "Bondage Fruit".
