Ornette Coleman Free Jazz: In Britain there appear to 4 different versions of this album on CD. They are 8122-72397-2 (In a white digipak) 7567-81347-2 (In a jewel case) 8122-73609-2 (In a red digipak) 8122-75208-2 (In a grey card sleeve, with a hole cut in it to show the Pollock picture underneath) The first of these looks like just the original album, whilst I think the other three all have the same 17-minute extra track First take. Can anyone confirm this? Cuong Vu: Does anyone know anything about Cuong Vus touring plans. I know hes playing in Leeds at the end of March, but I cant find a London date. Surely he cant be coming all this way just for one show. There doesnt appear to be anything worthwhile about him on the web. Atomic Boom Boom: Does anyone know why this album hasnt come out outside Norway. According to the Jazzland website it was coming out at the end of September last year. The soundclips were brilliant and I was really looking forward to it. Since then, nothing! I hope Jazzland still have distribution as I want the Endresen/Wallumrød CD when its released. Ruins / Zeuhl question

Hi all, I've been listening to Symphonica from the Ruins quite a lot lately and I'm wondering if they did other albums that are so much "Zeuhl-influenced" or if someone knows other bands who did similar albums. I have a few other albums by the Ruins (Tzomborgha, Stonehenge, Mandala 2000) but Symphonica is really the one I prefer. -- Thierry

It's a good idea to find out from local customs what the limit is in terms of import value and declare a value slightly less than that to avoid customs. Another good strategy for buying CDs from overseas is to have the customs label say "sound recordings" rather than "CDs." This helps for both customs and security reasons, since customs people rarely bother with the former designation. I've also found that when you use USPS Global Express rather than other shipping options, you are more likely to get your package without customs delays etc. It costs a slight bit more, but it's worth it.

Good London Record/CD Store

Hi Folks, Just migrated from NYC to London recently and have been checking out the area. I found a great record store for avant/experimental/atypical music: These Records www.theserecords.com 112 Brook Drive SE11 4TQ The actual store is a bit hard to find; refer to the website for a map (along with directions, in Japanese). Mailorder is available from the webpage, though you'd miss out on the bargain bins. I picked up a Evan Parker & Eddie Prevost double CD, "Most Materiall," on sale for £10. There were loads of older recordings by Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Fred Frith, etc. which were reduced as well. The focus on UK-artists was apparent, but there was also loads of Sun Ra and various Japanese musicians as well. There is a considerable amount of music encompassing everything from improv, electronics, noise to spoken word to a section (w/4 subsects) called "The Section with No Name." It's definitely a place worth visiting if you'll be in London. prices of imported CDs

Hi, I hadn't been following this discussion much until this morning, but there's at least one issue of how international commerce works that have been ignored here. The price difference between domestically manufactured and imported CDs isn't simply a matter of differences in VAT, GST or local sales tax depending on the municipalities involved. There's also the matter of import duty. Most, if not all, countries charge importers a percentage of the cost of the goods which they import. The result is that the wholesale cost of a Tzadik disc to a store in, say Spain, Germany, or England will probably be significantly higher than the wholesale cost to a store in the US. Since many, if not all, shops usually mark things up 100% over their costs, the resulting retail price of imported goods can be substantially higher than it might be in the home country of the goods. In most cases, I'd expect that local retailers are not trying to gouge the customers for imported avant garde music any more than their usual markup percentages, it's simply that they have to also absorb the cost of the import duty. Technically, this import duty is usually owed by individuals bringing goods into a country as well as businesses, but in many cases, because individuals don't deal with this end of the government as much as businesses do, it's somewhat easier to avoid paying the duty on discs that one might order from folks like DMG, Verge, etc. Technically in most countries, the duty is still owed and it's quite possible to hit with bigtime charges depending on how packages are labelled etc. Next time you receive a package from one of these vendors look at the value they've listed on the green or white import forms. In most cases in which you aren't paying duty, the value listed on the forms is probably significantly lower than the amount you paid. RE: UK record prices

Coming into this discussion a bit late (just joined the list), but those of you trying to get Steve Beresford records in Virgin ought to try Sound 323 in Highgate - both a brick and mortar store and mailorder at www.sound323.com - they have a great selection and most CDs are in the £10-12 range, big used selection as well. Plus Mark Wastell (the musician who runs the shop) is at least a bit friendlier than the average Virgin employee. There's also Ray's, now a part of Foyle's book shop that has a surprisingly good free-jazz/improvised music section, including some avant discs (at certainly less than £35), and Selectadisc on Berwick Street, which has a smaller selection, but some amazing deals (picked up three Sun Ra Cds there for under £9 (i.e. £3 each), new, the other week).
