Ellington, The Early Years, by Mark Tucker - Tucker's work compiling the above was great preparation for this - probably what you're seeking in studying the roots and evolution of the band. Duke Ellington, Jazz Composer, by Ken Rattenbury - full of transcriptions and musical analysis, the most useful in seeking out more technical answers - English author doesn't cover culture Beyond Category, The Life & Genius of Duke Ellington, by John Edward Hasse - a thick book, but more of an overview. Each section ends with an "Essential Ellington" subchapter on recordings. The World of Duke Ellington, by Stanley Dance - this English author gets it right, for he was personally close to Ellington, and travelled with the band. Not much in the way of musical analysis, but packed with anecdotes. Dance is a fine writer, whose American wife produced some of Duke's small group sessions. Duke Ellington in Person, by Mercer Ellington (w/Stanley Dance) - touching, intimate and revealing view by his long suffering son - the closest look we can get. Music Is My Mistress, by Duke Ellington - the autobiography that is more of a love note to his colleagues, prior to his passing. At least it's in his own words, revealing his personality. related: Lush Life, by David Hajdu - really great biography of Strayhorn. Last chapter has a touching cameo of Duke. Boy Meets Horn, and Jazz Masters of the Thirties, both by Rex Stewart - this very talented cornetist was an astute writer (and cook) who covers some Ellington in these books, and was the leader who gave Steve Lacy his stage name.

Right now I have several new music items on auction at ebay, including unsual recordings and publications of contemporary and experimental music including: several LP recordings of avant garde jazz by Marilyn Crispell, George E Lewis, Evan Parker (with and without Paul Lytton), Sam Rivers, Archie Shepp, Leo Smith, Cecil Taylor and others. For folks interested in more or otherly experimental work, I've also got the following: the compilations Tulpas and Ohm; an early Phill Niblock vinyl only-release; an early collection of writings by composer Steve Reich; Arcana, a collection of writings by many composers and performers of new music, edited by John Zorn; several books on sound art, including a monograph by Bernard Leitner, an exhibition catalog and a collection of essays by the Bsachet brothers, Harry Bertoia, Bill Colvig, Ivor Darreg, Lou Harrison, Harry Partch, and others; a journal with essays by James Tenney and Robert Ashley; and others. hi, i've been a really big This Heat/Charles Hayward kick lately with my listening habits and I've been trying to track down some recordings. happy there,in Italy vat (i.v.a.) is 20 %! A little record shop charge is about 30%, so you have the final absurd price you told. the high street stores live upon Robbie Williams sales and they don't care to lower Steven Beresford 's cd on Avant. The real problem for increasing the price is "how many unprofessional hands are you ready to pay for your cd"? Buying at Dischord web site Fugazi cds charges me just for their work plus the postman. At the same time I can't help visiting once a week my favourite little record shop, with piles of vinyls,zines and people to talk to ; paying 50 % more than a mail order assures me: make committed stores owners worth the living fighting in my own way unemploynment; my hospital, my children schools, and all other social services still public payed by mv VAT and the record store owner taxes. ciao luca __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi, why not go to http://www.djangos.com/? They list most Tzadik titles for $13.99. And if you buy for $50 or more shipping is free worldwide (sometimes the minimum is $25). I've ordered more than 50 cd's there now and they're very reliable. And from time to time they have special offers, so I once ended up buying Tzadik cd's there for $12.49! Hi Efren, The recent release of Reflectativity on Tzadik wasn't a re-issue; it was a new recording and as I recall fairly different in terms of improvisations (as well as having Malachi Favors on bass rather than, was it?, Wes Brown). I'm away from my LPs right now, but Smith had at least four LPs on the Kabell label, including a solo disc, the old recording of Reflectativity, Song of Humanity & something else I can't remember the name of. There may have been one or two others. I agree there is a tax to be paid. But in the US there must also be a tax, right? Anyway, a 18% tax on the (lets suppose) 12 dollars wholesale price, makes it 14.16 dollars. Postage per CD must be insignificant for large quantities. There is absolutely no excuse... BTW last week I saw "Signals for tea" for 10 euros at a CD shop here in Amsterdam along with some other AVANT CDs... any distributor bankrupted again? I too found some peace of mind when I discovered mailorder already 15 years ago, but still i wonder.... and then thinking how many people dont have a credit card or the chance to go on line... For the record, good selection and prices (relatively) in Europe can be found at www.open-door.de which is not the fastest, but anyway a nice mailorder shop. adios manolis

Im not sure about in other parts of Europe but here in Britain high street music retailers do have a couple of genuine excuses for charging so much. First of all, we pay a ridiculous 17.5% V.A.T. (point of sales tax). I worked in CD shop about 10 years ago and I remember how much adding the tax effected the prices. Also, on this over-populated island land is at a premium and property is extremely expensive. Having said that, there really is no excuse for the blatant stupidity that Efren outlined in his posting. In the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street in London the Jazz department has 4 copies of Steve Beresfords Signals for Tea (Avant) at an unbelievable £35.99 each!!! They must have been in the racks for 8 or 9 years now, and theyve never once put them in the sale. Im also increasingly frustrated by the abysmal service Ive been getting on the high street. They simply dont know anything about what theyre selling. I think the arrival of the internet is splitting the field. The big shops are now only interested in turning over stock as rapidly as possible; the competition is extremely stiff and prices are actually coming down. I've seen assistants in shops like Virgin and HMV turning customers away who wanted to order something that wasn't in the store. As I dont want the latest dross by Robbie Williams I am thankful that I can get pretty much whatever I want at relatively reasonable prices on the web, from Canada or the States. By the way, has anyone used www.splashdvd.com? They seem to be offering a lot of Tzadik stuff for £10 delivered. Seems too good to be true.
