John Zorn shows attendance question

Hi, This is a question for anyone who's ever been involved in producing/promoting a John Zorn show, particularly Electric Masada or similar projects (Masada Quartet, The Gift, etc) Regardless of direct involvement, first-hand information would also be highly appreciated, particularly in terms of shows attendance in any countries in Europe or overseas. (good compilations or similar) The "jungle" period started in the 20's when trumpeter Bubber Miley joined the band (I think it was at the Kentucky Club in 1926). Previously (as the Washingtonians) they had a "sweet" sound with Duke's old pals Artie Whetsol (tpt) and Otto Hardwick (saxes). Miley brought unprecedented use of mutes, specifically the plunger, and the blues (which they hadn't done up to this point). Duke had already brought trombonist Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton into the band for some of his unusual timbres with mutes, and he picked up even more from hanging with Miley. Miley was of a different social class from the rest of the band, and his powerful contributions changed it forever. Unfortunately, his life style got in the way and he couldn't maintain his position in the band. Cootie Williams, (Mobile, Alabama) was brought in to replace Miley, with Nanton showing him the muting techniques - but at heart, he was a different player, whose attributes surfaced later (awesome power and majesty). (Similarly Nanton tutored Ray Nance when Williams was hired away by Benny Goodman.) Some of this music found its way into early sound cartoons which spread the influence far and wide. Barney Bigard's clarinet, Hardwick's bass sax, and Sonny Greer's percussion antics also factored in the jungle sound. If you want "jungle" - look for Bubber Miley and Joe Nanton in the credits, thought Cootie played the role excellently for several years to come. The Brunswicks are a good set, but since the band recorded for half a dozen different labels simultaneously during this period, I've found the French Chronological Classics series covers it all, and you only have to buy them one at a time.

I think I posted some comments back in September. Zorn was blowing in a very free-jazz fashion, Graves' playing was flowing like a river. The end was very intense with Zorn soloing while sitting on the back of Graves. Needless to say I have great expectations from the CD. By the way wasnt the special edition Hemophiliac 2CD supposedly the only recording to ever exist of this trio? isnt the birthday edition a surprise? regards manolis

So how is that Gainsbourg? my np is David Manson's "Beast" -- highly recommended to anyone looking to add to their (no doubt already vast) solo trombone CD holdings. Other than one track with Davey Williams, it's all trombone and electronic sampling, featuring some really witty, unexpected juxtapositions (like diesel truck sounds) and very interesting compositions by Manson and others. His last release was "Fluid Motion," a gorgeous collaboration with Sam Rivers' trio (all Manson compositions, but definitely showing a Rivers influence). Manson plays with Rivers' big band sometimes and is also in several Tampa Bay-area groups, including the Zappa repetoire group Bogus Pomp. Parry

Please listen. -kurt >>> Bassist Malachi Favors Maghostut died January 30 at, according to some sources, the age of 67, although he claimed to be more than 43,000 years old. He was the quiet and deeply mystic member of The Art Ensemble of Chicago, a band that worked an air of Afrocentric mythology into its act, and was the only one to keep his home in Chicago. Favors was a member of the Muhal Richard Abrams Experimental Band in 1961, the ensemble that evolved into the seminal Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. He was a quiet man, rarely giving interviews or leading bands, but his hypnotically repeating bass was a defining part of not just the AECO but Kahil ElZabars Ritual Trio, and projects with Sunny Murray, Archie Shepp, Dewey Robinson and others. The Squids Ear presents a memorial tribute to the music of this passed master, selecting his compositions from the Art Ensemble songbook as well as his work with some of the some of the worlds greatest (primarily Chicago, of course) improvisers.
