hi peoples, i have a question i am hoping someone might be able to help me with. yesterday i walked into a store, which was playing a track with the line " I love you too much to ever like you" or something along those lines. a quick search on the net has given me the name "wayne wade". the problem is i don't remember the song to sound anything like a reggae track. it sounded way more pop or possibly even country. does anyone know who might have covered the song perhaps. the only other detail i have is that i think it may have appeared on some Readers Digest comp! thanks. aaron __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? ellington / blanton + some zorn

hello everyone I noticed a while back that RCA has re-re-released the duke ellington blanton-webster band 3CD set. Needless to say, it's some of my favorite ellington. The question I'm hoping someone can answer is: Is the sound quality on the latest version any better than the RCA/Bluebird release (number 5659-2-RB)? The reason I ask is that I recall there being a number of complaints from people on this list about the lousy mastering on the RCA/Bluebird set, but I'm having no luck (using the web) trying to find out if the newest release is a brand new mastering job.... On a slightly different note, I noticed that the reviewer of ellington's anatomy of a murder on allmusic.com mentions that "Ellington naturally subordinated his music to the action in the film, but...." (the emphasis being on the 'but'). I found this statement interesting, because of the implication that writing music for visual narrative somehow implies a 'dilution' or otherwise negative impact on the music. Personally, of all of the Ellington I have, 'Anatomy of a murder' ranks as one of my favorites precisely because of the constraints within which ellingtion has to work. These constraints lead him to write nusic he otherwise might not have written. (e.g., the end of 'upper and outest', to name one moment - and there are many.) Relating this to John Zorn, I recently purchased 'invitation to a suicide' (Filmworks 13) on the basis of reading a number of positive reviews. However, while the music is enjoyable, it basically consists of a series of thematically related jams (where a number of them have no chord changes). Now, I haven't seen the film, but nothing in the cd booklet gives the impression that the film is a relatively slow series of variations on the same visual theme. Given what soundtrack music could be (as illustrated by Ellington's 'anatomy of a murder' - or many other soundracks by other composers) I must admit I was a bit dissapointed. Whit

I'm not so sure why first we have to rank historical atrocities and then accord the Holocaust top honors. Or why we must view Hitler as not only a historical figure but the embodiment of pure evil. Is what he did any more evil than the genocide of the Native Americans or the Armenians? Or the hundreds of years of trans-Atlantic slavery? These questions especially bother me because growing up Jewish I felt that Jewish identity (at least of the middle-class American variety) was largely defined negatively, around victimhood. I always got the impression that it was important to be a Jew because my grandparents had to leave Poland and Germany and it was my responsibility to repopulate the race. Or by not being observant I'd be betraying my family. I never felt too much of any real religious conviction and was sickened at how the basic ethical concerns of Judaism were never followed. Jazzfest in Athens, GA

This thing has been in the works for a couple of years. My club is hosting two of the four nights here. By a strike of luck, Fantomas and Melt-Banana have been booked to play our club right in the middle of all this (4/2), so it will be a great time to come down south to check out some music. There will also be an exhibition of Brotzmann's art at a local gallery as well. They had Misha Mengelberg ready to go, but his visa cost too much money for the organizers to get for some reason. I'm sure it has everything to do with the stupid political climate in America right now. if any of you guys are coming down, let me know, it would be a good thing to put faces on the names of all you people on the list. Eugene Chadbourne and Marc Ribot are both unmistakably virtuosos of modern guitar. They are responsible for helping shape New Yorks downtown music scene in the 1970s and 80s into what is now internationally renowned. While their styles are self-invented and distinct from one another, Chadbourne and Ribot share many similarities often at times drawing a parallel. Both guitarists have created their own improvisational language, extending traditional techniques of classical guitar with influences ranging from American folk music to country blues, Tin Pan Alley to Albert Ayler. And both are the only two musicians to have tackled John Zorns set of solo guitar etudes The Book of Heads, a highly imaginative work originally written for and dedicated to Chadnourne yet recorded by Ribot. Eugene Chadbourne For more than 25 years Eugene Chadbourne has been a mainstay of the international avant-garde new music scene to which he brought stylistic influences ranging from country music to heady jazz in the tradition of Ornette Coleman and Anthony Braxton. An eclectic composer/musician, Chadbourne performs on electric guitar and five-string banjo and is an alumnus of the legendary 80s band Shockabilly. He did pioneering work on the prepared guitar and invented the Electric Rake, a humorous sound effects and performance device that started a whole series of similar contraptions and inspires many others to create like-minded instruments. He has been featured on nearly 100 commercially released albums and compact discs; the lions share his own projects. He is also a frequent guest as sideman on avant-garde, jazz, country and rock projects and has appeared on many compilations released throughout the world. Marc Ribot began his eclectic mixing of styles as a teenager in Newark in the 1960s, where he played guitar in various garage bands while studying with his mentor, the Haitian classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. In 1978, Ribot crossed the river to New York City, and began playing with such musicians as jazz organist Jack McDuff and legendary soul shouter Wilson Pickett, and later backed up Stax/Volt stars Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas and Solomon Burke. Ribot began his five-year stint as a member of the Lounge Lizards, John Lurie's innovative and influential downtown jazz ensemble in 1984. His six-string style, which blended elements of classicist blues guitar with an ironic No Wave aesthetic, caught the ear of Elvis Costello and Tom Waits, both of whom he toured and recorded with. At the same time, he continued to explore the ever-changing terrain of New York's new music, working with such musicians as Arto Lindsay, Don Byron, Elliott Sharp, Anthony Coleman, T-Bone Burnett, the Jazz Passengers, Evan Lurie, the Sun Ra Arkestra, Chocolate Genius, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and Zorn in any number of incarnations. Ribot also composed and recorded his own brand of downtown soul music with his bands, Rootless Cosmopolitans and Shrek, as well under his own name and with the Los Cubanos Postizos. Holy Shit! Just saw Douglas's Quintet last night and although I have several recordings with C. Potter on them, I just realized he is the secret weapon of this band. This guy took my head off... BTW, the interview / promo cd from Strange Liberation is being distributed free of charge at the show, so be advised of those pesky e-bayers selling it :) The encore of Bjork's Unison (from The Infinite and or the original source material of Vespertine if you prefer) was great. What interplay between Douglas and Potter. The only bummer was the political commentary from Dave. I try to keep my politics separate from music but oh well.
