WSLC General Session - this Wednesday, January 21
Hello Fellow WSLC Members, I look forward to seeing you at our first Women's State Legislative Council General Session for 2015. The next meeting is this Wednesday, January 21 at noon in the Copper Room at the Senate Office Building. This is the same room where many of our meetings were held during the 2014 legislative session. We have several speakers for this preview of the legislative session. The agenda and new information about the cafeteria is attached to this email. We will also remember Immediate Past President Sylvia Rickard. Good Afternoon Fellow WSLC Members, We had an excellent meeting yesterday to kick off the 2015 session. I was pleased to see we filled the room. The next meeting is this Wednesday, January 28 at noon in the Copper Room at the Senate Office Building. The Business and Labor Committee have arranged speakers to discuss amendments to the Minimum Wage Act and wage obligations for tipped employees. Also to this email, I have included an Interest Form from the Nominating Committee. Please review the form and return it to the committee by Feb. 4 to let them know if would consider running for one of the elected offices or let them know your interest some of the many appointed positions. Returning the form to the committee does not obligate you to run, but if you let them know you are interested they can discuss the position in more detail with you. It takes many people to make an organization like ours successful and with your assistance, we can be strong for many years to come. You will find a description of most of the elected and appointed positions in the bylaws - which you will find in the new handbooks that were handed out last week. Here is a short summary of the elected positions to help you as you review the interest form. President Elect Currently filled by: Shauna Scott-Bellaccomo Duties: chair the Membership and Credentials Committee and chair the Resolutions Committee First Vice President Currently filled by: Skip Reese Duties: perform duties of president in her absence and chair the Bulletin Committee Recording Secretary Currently filled by: Jean Davies Duties: keep a detailed record of actions taken by WSLC (minutes); assist the historian and serve on the Bylaws and Handbook Committee Corresponding Secretary Currently filled by: Jessica Christopher Duties: conduct correspondence of WSLC as directed by the president; keep and accurate role of members; notify members of meetings and activities Treasurer Currently filled by: Shannon Huff Jacobs Duties: receive all dues and monies; prepare a biennial budget; pay bills; serve on the Membership and Credentials Committee; keep an alphabetical list of members Historian Currently filled by: Carol Harley Duties: keep an accurate written record and book of the history of WSLC Directors The two director positions to be filled this coming biennium are: Business/Labor/Public Utilities & Technology/Community and Economic Development - currently Suzanne Mulet, Director Education - currently Donna Murphy, Director Duties: follow the legislative policies related to the committee; attend interim committee meetings; introduce resolutions related to the committee; coordinate speakers related to legislative priorities See you on Wednesday, Jessica Christopher WSLC Corresponding Secretary
Good Afternoon Fellow WSLC Members, The next meeting is this Wednesday, February 4 at noon in the Copper Room at the Senate Office Building. The Health and Human Services Committee has arranged speakers to discuss many bills with topics such as investigational drug and device access for terminal patients, assistance for children with disabilities, the digital health services commission, and the repeal of methamphetamine housing reconstruction and rehabilitation. Representatives Froerer and Redd, as well as, Senator Shiozawa will be joining us. The complete agenda is attached. All of the bills we will be discussing have been numbered - which you will find on the agenda. In addition to the agenda, the minutes from the Jan. 28 meeting are attached and the Elected Officer Interest Form that was handed out last week. Good Afternoon Fellow WSLC Members, May I start by mentioning how outstanding our meetings have been so far this year. They have been informational and the questions have been very good. Several of us have stayed behind continuing the discussions. Thank you to the directors and co-chairs who have been determining our topics and finding our speakers. Now on to the purpose of this email... The next meeting is this Wednesday, February 11 at noon in the Copper Room at the Senate Office Building. The Natural Resources, Environment, and Agriculture Legislative Study Committee has arranged speakers to discuss the transfer of federal lands to Utah. Representative Ken Ivory will join us along with a professor from the S.J. Quinney College of Law (UofU) and the President of the Salt Lake City School Board. I understand we will also consider resolutions related to the land transfer during the meeting on Wednesday. Please check your emails on Monday for copies of the resolutions and any additional information the committee believes will be helpful for the discussion on Wednesday. Hello Fellow WSLC Members, The next WSLC meeting is this Wednesday, February 18 at noon in the Copper Room at the Senate Office Building. The Education Legislative Study Committee has invited several legislators to come speak to us about the changes to the State School Board Election process. The current method of electing state school board members was struck down by a U.S. District Court judge in September 2014. Representatives Gibson, Thurston, Powell, and McCay are sponsoring bills in the House to address the issue. Senator Jackson is sponsoring a bill in the Senate. They all are bringing a different legislative solution to the floor. You will find the full agenda and bill numbers on the attached agenda. The next WSLC meeting is this Wednesday, February 25 at noon in the Copper Room in the Senate Office Building. The Judiciary/Law Enforcement & Criminal Justing/Revenue & Taxation Legislative Study Committee have invited speakers to address Medical Cannabis and E-cigarettes. Senator Madsen, Representative Ray, and representatives from the DEA, American Cancer Society, Utah Smoke Free Association, and Salt Lake County Behavioral Health will be joining us. Even though at the time of this email, neither of the bills we will be discussing have been numbered, it is very likely they will be numbered by Wednesday. Good Snowy Afternoon Fellow WSLC Members, We have an outstanding program coming up for our next WSLC meeting is this Wednesday, March 4 at noon in the Copper Room in the Senate Office Building. This will be a joint meeting where both the Business and Labor Legislative Study Committee and the Health and Human Services Legislative Study Committee have arranged topics and speakers. We will be discussing multiple options for expanded health care options - essentially the Medicaid expansion. We will also discuss protections for contact lens consumers - a surprisingly interesting topic. The Nominating Committee submitted candidates for elected positions for the upcoming biennium during last Wednesday's meeting. Hello Everyone, I have just been provided the agenda for Wednesday's meeting and wanted to get it out to you. You will notice on the agenda the elections begin at 12:30 and balloting will close at 2:15. Please remember to bring your name tag/badge with you.
