Herb, I have been sailing for thirty years, in fresh water, on the Hudson River ( Hyde Park Area ) and I moved to Southern North Carolina about 3 years ago. I arrived here with a Seaward 23 in tow and intended to use it to sail the intecoastal, the mouth of the Cape Fear River and local coastal waters. It was very well suited for these waters with a fairly shallow draft, nice cabin space and very seaworthy. Since dockage is expensive and moorings are not available I was lucky enough to find an anchorage that I could long term the boat right near the house. I did this for a season, but found the upkeep on a boat in salt water to be more than I wanted to bother with at 58. I began researching other boats and was actually looking at the Potter on a website when I spotted another micro cruiser in the background of a race photo. I was lucky that the site listed the other boats make and I began researching the Montgomery. I checked out the 15 and 17 and was toying with either when a beautiful Montgomery 15 showed up in Ithaca, NY. It was a 2003 and it looked like bran-new, almost too good to be true. I immediately sent a deposit and had the boat surveyed. It was in excellent condition and even had a roller furling system and new jib sail to boot. I'm glad that I got the 15, because the 17 would have been too big for my garage. The 15 is excellent in these waters and can even be gunkholed if you choose to. This boat is in my opinion the best boat for these waters if you're looking for ease of launch and inside storage. The cockpit is a nice size and the V-berth is bigger than I anticipated, the lapstrake is great for strength and beating down any splash. I think this boat is a great boat for an old-timer who wants to avoid allot of maintenance. It is easy to launch, and easy to sail! I hope this will help you with your quest for a new boat... Hi Herb, More comments to your questions: The M15 because of it's size, is a bit tender; i.e., it doesn't have the weight of a larger keel boat so when you get on board it will move about a bit. It's size is a big advantage if you are just beginning to feel your way. The sails are relatively small: the boom is light weight. I don't recommend getting hit on the head during a jibe by even a very light boom, but on my 29 footer it was a solid spruce boom about 6" in diameter. That was a very serious potential cause for injury, and had to treated with great respect and caution. As for sailing it, 12 to 15 knots of wind sound ideal. My only adive is to make sure you have CAM cleats for the jib sheet; not jam cleats. Why? ...well if you are hit by a sudden gust, if the jib sheet is held in a cam cleat, a slight upwards tug will instantly release it, .... which is what you want. With jam cleats (that I originally had on my M15 #400) if you are hit by a sudden gust, the jib sheet will be pulled more firmly into the jam cleat, and you will have to exert a lot of force - pulling agains the load on the jib sheet to get it to release. After my first experience with that problem, my next step was to replace the jam cleats with cam cleats. Otherwise, the M15 is forgiving; has a nice motion; and as I said previously - is a joy to sail. I just wish that I still had mine....! Herb/ handling qualities of the M 15

Herb, I have sailed a M 15 on San Francisco Bay. Most summer afternoons the winds are 25+knots. Sailing in these conditions with a double reefed main and a storm bridge are a blast. The boat will handle these conditions without a problem. In addition, she's quite dry even in the steep chop caused by wind and opposing current. I like the 15's so much, that I purchased another one (I sold my first about 10 years ago) even though I keep a heavy displacement keel boat in the water. The 15 allows me to cruise lakes and to go to places like the San Juan Islands. All you need is ingenuity to make use of the space and build a boom tent. You will not regret the purchase. Herb, The M-15 is a fairly forgiving boat. It is ballasted, so it is not as tippy as some small boats. If you run aground it is easy to hop over the side and push off. If the worse possible scenario unfolds and you swamp the boat, it has positive flotation. Just keep in mind that it is a small boat. Do not hang a big motor off the back or invite everyone in the neighborhood to go sailing with you. When sailing try to keep the boat balanced fore and aft - sit near the cabin in the middle of the boat. I use a tiller extension, some people have retrofitted a longer tiller. There is no rule that says the first time you take the boat out you have to sail it. You may leave the sails behind, you can even leave the mast and boom behind. There are enough new things to do with out the sails. If you launch the boat, motor around a bit, tie up to a dock and then recover the boat, you will have had a full day. Figuring out how to fill the fuel tank is a lot easier if you do not have the sails up. You can practice raising the mast and bending on the sails in your driveway. I would suggest waiting until the breeze has died down. As far as predictable 12-15 mph winds, I would kill for that. In the summer on our lake in Kentucky we have light winds. I have been out in 20+ mph winds which was somewhat stupid since I was the only boat on the lake, but it is a blast to rocket along. I have to wait for a front to pass through to get those kind of winds. It is a lot easier to go slow in a stiff breeze than to go fast in a light breeze. It seems that virtually everything written about sailing is about going fast. It took me a long time to realize that if you do not do the "go fast" things, you will "go slow". My sailing club offers sailing lessons, I am sure a club near you will have them. Even if you are an experienced sailor, going to lessons gives you insight into local conditions. When I was between boats, after sailing for over 20 years, my wife and I took the ASA week long course primarily so I could see how well she would be on the water. I did not expect to learn much, after all I am man so I know everything, but it was a rewarding experience. I learned how to sail off a dock and return without using the motor. I never would have tried that on my own in a million years. So, I think the M-15 is a great boat to learn to sail on, and you have a nice location to go sailing. steve Steve R. Thank you Mr. Bones for your thoughts. I think I put too many questions out there. I want to redo the bottom and put on a barrier coat of epoxy. Question: After I get the bottom paint off. Do I apply the barrier coat of epoxy right over the gelcoat? Any help anyone could give me who has done this process, it will be appreciated. bottom paint removal

Best stuff I've ever used? Franmar's Soy Strip. I first tried the stuff from West Marine, but it was basically a futile exercise. The Soy Strip liquified the bottom paint and left the gelcoat unharmed. check out the site: http://www.franmar.com/practical.html I ordered it direct from the manufacturer.
