Hi Jim: You can correctly fly the ensign from a flagstaff at the stern, or sewn onto the leech of your mainsail, 2/3 of the way up. It should be 1" long for every foot of boat length... in your case, 15" minimum. This is according to John Rousmaniere in the Annapolis Book of Seamanship. Last note for awhile on the compression post problem I have. Bob Eeg generously spoke with me about the compression post. I'll try to pass on some of what he said: 1) No need to bed the base of the lower post with 5200. Rather, he encouraged making a "dough nut" around the base with cloth and resin after sanding my liner to help it stick. The main idea being not to let the base of the post slide out of place. 2) They raise the berth liner a bit with a jack and let it back down on the post to hold it, and I think he said to add a screw or bolt through to the post cap. 3) Bolt down the lower cap of the upper compression post, and arrange another dough nut, of wood, around the top of the post, maybe even letting the post into the wood block under the mast base, inside the cabin. He said 5200 could be used at the top. I assume a jack could be carefully used in that process too. The main thing he conveyed, as did Bill I believe, is that the posts need to be kept from sliding out of place so they can do their job of taking the vertical load. He uses aluminum posts (I think he said) on the new M boats cut from stock used on Cat 24's, that he gets from Garhauer. I didn't ask if they were tubular, or spar stock. He also talked with me about putting oarlocks on my M17 with the aluminum toerail, since there can be no genoa track along the edge of the deck with those toerails. He suggested mocking up wood blocks for position and height, then having aluminum blocks manufactured as with Strawanza, then bolting them on through the deck for use. bottom paint

Jeff, That's correct. I worked with the sandblaster so that I knew exactly when the swing keel came out of the sandblasting building. I already had the paint mixed at home and everything waiting for me. We loaded up the keel and got it home in about 10 minutes. I blew it off and then immediately coated it with a coat of 2000 E epoxy barrier coat (per Interlux's instructions). After that, time was not an issue. I then used VC Watertight epoxy filler to fill and fair all the pits. Any time I exposed bare metal while fairing I coated it with 2000 E as soon as I was done fairing for the day so it would not rust. After all the filling and fairing was done I gave her 5 coats of 2000 E and then a light sanding through the first coat or two to smooth it out. So far we've made it through 2 seasons without a trace of rust except a spot where I "kissed" a rock going through some unexpectedly shallow water. That knocked about a fingernail size piece of filler off the leading edge of the swing keel and exposed some cast iron. It is showing some minor rust staining there but I'm going to let it go another season before hauling the boat with a crane again (I hope!) and touching that up. Danelle, Yes, I did use Peel-A-Way. I found it was very temperature dependant and did not work nearly as well when it was cool out. Was it better than sanding..probably, because there was no dust...but it was no picnic. Unfortunately, that lapstrake hull that we all love so dearly makes stripping the bottom and incredible amount of work. It's worth it in the end, though. Keep the faith!!! Danelle, Interlux has a great website that has their complete boat painting guide on it. I have referred to it many times and it answers a lot of questions re: re-coating your bottom. _http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/_ (http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/) You have already identified one of the most important things that you really need to know..and that is what type of paint is already applied (hard, ablative, vinyl, etc). You really need to know the type of paint that's on there and the type of paint that you intend to apply. Then there is a chart in the painting guide that will tell you the preparation steps that you will need to take (scuff, sand, remove completely, clean....whatever) based on your situation. I feel your "pain" as Dauntless is sitting in the driveway awaiting a re-coat of her bottom paint as we speak. It's not the most fun job but I always make sure that I follow the directions of the manufacturer as close as I can. The job of that bottom paint that's on there is to release anything that tries to adhere to it... the last thing you want it to do is to release the newly applied bottom paint on your first sailing day of the year! With the costs of the bottom paint these days, that'd get expensive! Good job on getting that swing keel all fixed up. That's not the most fun job either, but since you did it right you should be good for years to come. Just before we pulled Dauntless out of her slip for the summer I scuba dove the bottom and checked out the condition of the swing keel to see how it's holding up. That epoxy barrier coat has done it's job and is keeping any rusting from occurring. I was glad to see that. Well, it's warming up already this morning so I better go get to bottom painting, just like you. Thanks for the website pointers, Sean! Now that I've read a little more, I'm wondering how I'm going to get good enough weather for painting. It's been raining and about 40 degrees the past week. We'd be pretty lucky to have 50 degree days before our time is up at the boat yard...there are a lot of fishing boats being pulled and painted right now too though, so people must just wait for a dry-ish day and go for it. I was just reading the label on the can of Pettit bottom paint my husband thoughtfully bought for me the other day. I figured I'd just have to return it, after talking to the previous owner and hearing about the Interlux. Now that I've read that label though, prompted by reading the Interlux website, I realize that I'm going to have to sand the whole bottom down, or use a chemical stripper - the old paint would fit the can label's description of "soft and in poor condition". So, I may as well just use this Pettit paint if I have to start from scratch. I've been sanding out some ugly pitted spots at the bottom edges of the CB trunk too. I guess I should fill them in with epoxy? So, are there opinions out there on sanding vs stripping? Was it you Sean, that used the peel-away? There are some spots on our bow that are banged-up down to the bare fiberglass under the topside paint too, so I'm going to have to figure out how to touch those up until I decide to tackle the topsides. (Not this spring - that paint is not elegantly-applied, but it's still quite good. I've been taking photos, but now I have to figure out how to configure them properly to share with the site. bottom paint

Well, we've had the sailboat pulled out and up on blocks at the marina for a week and a half now. We got the rusted, stuck centerboard out after a few work sessions using a handsaw to loosen the rust between the trunk sides and the CB. Then we put a concrete stake through the hole in the trunk (it's rough and wide - it had been sealed up) in the cabin. We braced it on the CB top, and pounded it down with a 10 lb sledge hammer and it finally the CB let loose. It's been sandblasted and coated, and it looks so much better. No where near the artwork that was done one the "Dauntless", whose work I so enjoyed reading about, but it is fine for us. I just received Brian Gilbert's book in the mail, and it has a lot of great info. I'm going to be re-painting the bottom, and have been trying to figure out the best way to do it. The old coat is thin and worn, so I guess I'll sand it and just paint right over what's left. The info I've found in books is sort of confusing - should I put a primer on, then fresh bottom paint, or just the new paint right over the top of the sa nded old paint? I talked with the guy who'd painted it, and all the remembers is that it was Interlux anti-fouling. So, I guess we'll try for the same thing, not knowing more. what is up with Boston, MA?

We just arrived for a long weekend in Boston and have found that none of the sailboat rental places are in the water yet. All of the places I called said boating season doesn't start until at least May. ???? My wife and I are out on Puget Sound in December in full foul weather gear and snow...and we have to dodge the numerous other sailboats out at that time of year...why are Bostonians such wimps? If any of you know of a rental place that is already open for business in MA, NH or RI, please post asap, as it is supposed to be fairly good weather tommorow also (today was at least 60 degrees, sunny, with a 10 to 15 knot breeze). thanks, Rick
