Montypals: So, M15 Kestrel has a drifter, and appears to have all the deck hardware to use it including blocks all the way back on the stern pulpit, whisker pole etc. So, how do I rig the son of a gun? I've been told it is a handful. I'll be in Santa Cruz for a week starting next Saturday, and would love to give it a try if the wind is right. I will have a crew, so I don't have to attempt it alone. Nice 4th of July Sailing

I thought I would post a video of nice sailing yesterday at Grant Lake, California. I only had videos taken from the boat and the idea of this video was to get a video of the boat sailing around in a nice local lake. As a result my sailing around is a bit frantic as I tried to get the tacks I wanted in relation to the camera. The wind was a bit variable in direction and strength. Stan, you 'da man. Looking forward to seeing you in Monterey and checking out your 'experimental' 17. The -Corinthian- description brings back memories--- way back in around '66 - '67, I did my first race event in my little W.D. Schock Sabot, race sponsored by the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Newport Beach, placed 4th. ;-) Three months later I was out with a few friends too many in the channel near the Balboa Pavilion and swamped the dang thing not far from the ferry traffic. Doh! A tow from the Harbor Patrol and 10 min later bailing water out on a stretch of sand. How many can we get in an M15 hahaha (NOT) -N

Monterey Cruiser Challenge XII

Greetings all, I have a crew member who is racing with me in CC on Saturday, however I would like to extend an invitation to any attendee who might be coming to Monterey "boatless" this year to crew with me on my Montgomery 15 Thursday afternoon or Friday if you would like to get out on the water (but not *in* it). I have a couple extra PFD but they are both small adult so you will probably need your own. If you're thinking about buying an M15 this might be your chance for some tiller time... Whisker Pole

We bought an adjustable whisker pole in this year, and got the eye screwed to the mast last week. Had 3 good outings over the weekend using it both downwind and broad reaching. Tried it both to windward (pole forward) and leeward when reaching Previous jib sheets were a bit on the short side for using our genoa. The lazy sheet just made it to a single wrap on the windward winch. So we added new jib sheets with an additional 10 feet to each side. Now allows the lazy sheet to run forward and hook under the foredeck cleat before it goes aft to the turning block on the t-track and to the winch. Using that as a fore guy tensioned against the active sheet really keeps the pole in a solid position. The pole has latches both ends. The latch is a bit on the small side for clipping to the sheets, so we have a loop of 3/16" line through the clew, and clip to that. Have to really keep 1 hand for the pole and 1 for yourself when handling the pole, so it does not take a jump overboard. Finally decided on whoever is on the tiller to hand it forward to the foredeck crew once they are at the mast. Have forgotten to take the lazy sheet off of the cleat a couple of times. Only found out when we decided to tack. We have to rig a couple of loops inside the cabin for storage so it is up off the V berth. Looking forward to another 3 days sailing this weekend as well on the west end of Lake Ontario. Bill Wickett Makin' Time M17 #622

Tom, I believe the backstay is 1/8 inch wire. All the wire on my boat is 1/8 inch diameter and was made up by Montgomery 'Rigging' (Jerry M) I once asked Mr Montgomery when he built new wire rigging for my boat if I should increase the forestay diameter to 5/32? The response was - 'only if you want it to weigh more - the wire is capable of supporting the weight of the complete boat' - he has a good point - (usually does). I have just purchase a 1981 Monty15. The trailer didn't have and extenson I was wondering if there is any way to put one on a trailer that didn't have one to start with.

Drifter and Spinnaker

Montypals: OK, just took a sail inventory, and a look at the boat. The last few months have been about rigging, launching, and learning how to sail with the stock sails. Nice. Bob Becker had quite the sail inventory when he sold me the boat. Now, the working jib is a Pineapple, and the plastic hanks were worn out. I bought new ones for about 5 bucks total and installed them. Nice! The drifter looks to be about a 160, and it has standard hanks. So, it should be easy to deal with in the correct air, because it just hanks on. There are nice jib cars and tracks on the combings aft of the shrouds, so that is where the sheets go. Can't wait to try that. Now, it turns out there is also a spinnaker! Anybody used one of those with an M15? It looks like it is just a bit short, and is not supposed to go all the way up the mast, but just below. Looking at my sailing books, and at the boat itself it looks like I am just about rigged for it, but not quite. There is a fitting about 1.5 feet above the forestay attachment on the mast that looks like a block could go there for the halyard. There are blocks on the stern pulpit that look like they accept the sheets/guy, and I have a whisker pole that may double as a spinnaker pole. Only thing that appears to be missing is a topping lift for the pole. I'll have to look that over. In any event, I would love to know if any of you have flown a spinnaker with the M15, and what I might need to do. Daniel
