Congratulations 'Racer Boys & Girl' ! ..............way to go team ! I had too much fun - and NO sour grapes in my basket all weekend - just fun ! Sailing in a beautiful place with the temps at 64 degrees didn't hurt either - Phoenix was 100 and painful degrees plus! Take Care,Have Fun, Go sailing GO For those on list that have not made it to the Cruiser Challenge - put it on the list - Monterey Bay and sailing and -----------FUN ! topping lift question

Hi all. I'm a new owner of an 1981 M17. Works great. But I have a question about a topping lift. Should I have one? It is currently rigged without, but that is because I just rigged it the way the previous owner rigged the mast. Seems to me there is no reason not to have one. It would certainly keep the boom up when lowering and reefing the main. Am I right? -tom

Tom, I don't know much about the swaging process either, but if you end up short on your backstay you could add a toggle to make up the difference. Genoa size for gusty lake

Hello fellow Monty owners, I am ordering a genoa to go with my new CDI Furler. I live in Wyoming, and sail on a gusty(up to 30 knots) lake at 6400' . I was about to order a 150% , and my friend who has had a 28' Precision on the lake for 10 years has advised me to go with a 135%. I have sent the measurements for the 133% found on the owners website to the sailmaker, Hood sails in Sausalito. I am waiting for his bid. Any thoughts about this issue ? Also, I saw a great trailer modification for centering the keel using PVC pipe. It was months ago, and I can't remember where that was. Any hints ? Thanks all, Doug Vogel 17' -#325 - Tieline

Hi Doug, I also live in the mountains in northern British Columbia and sail very large lakes with gusty winds in a prevailing west to east orientation. I had a 140% genoa on my Schaefer snap furler and found it was fine. But, I just purchased a new main and fantastic 150 from Yager sails out of Spokane.in 5.5 oz Egyptian cream dacron. Don did an excellent job and placed reefing marks at 130, 100, and 90%. Larry Yake has had a number of his sails made at Yager and so he might pipe in as well. He also sails on gusty mountain lakes. I went with the new main and 150 to get back to the proper sail plan which Lyle had designed. My old sails were cut too short and so I wanted to get them up into the best wind near the masthead. Tom, In the interest of your and your crews/guests safety - don't "wax" the nonskid. "Waxing Non-skid" That would be an conflict of interest. ;>) Actually a soft brush (wallpaper type) and some Simple Green should clean it to as 'pretty as it can be' and still retain non-skid property. This comes from a guy who slipped off his 17 and tore both rotator cuffs and biceps tendons - The other advice - when falling off the boat - just go with it no matter how cold the water - not worth the chance of tearing up your body. Just my personal experience. NON-SKID not polished or waxed. Have fun - the boat will look great ! GO

Tom, Stanley is THE authority on applying chemicals to recreational/commercial marine surfaces in my book (FWIW). He is a Marine Industry Professional - IOW - forget what the heck I wrote ! ;>) Woody Wax - run with it ! GO
