Cost of shipping M-17 across Atlantic

Hello fellow Monty owners, I've been vacationing for the past week near Barcelona, in Spain, on the Mediterranean coast, and dreaming about how nice it would've been to have my M-17 with me. As a pipe dream, I've been thinking about shipping it the way one ships a car, on its trailer, on a container ship, a month before getting here. Then flying here, sailing for a couple of weeks along the coast, sleeping on the boat, and then shipping it back. Does anyone have any idea if this would be prohibitively expensive? Of course it would probably be simpler to rent a boat here, but given that a Laser costs $50/hour, and a Hobie 15 $80/hour, I wonder if that is not even more expensive. This is a long term project, so no hurry to get answers; but it's nice to dream about... Andrei M-17 "Seaweed"

finish on ruder of M 15

My rudder is wood, and I do not leave it in the water. I either remove it or kick it up. I striped it down, put penetrating epoxy on the part that get submerged, and then put varnish on the entire thing. Bert Felton

Lets Talk Reefing

I am used to a sailboat with a fixed boom so when I drop the mail sail by loosening up the halyard all I did next was use a hook to lock down the main sail at the tack for the reefed position. With the Monty 15 things will happen differently. Do you guys mark the mast where you want the boom to stay so when you drop the main you hook the clew at this new position then raise the main again to tension the luff? Seems like this takes time, when we reefed on the Precision we could do this very fast. Ideas you guys have are appreciated. M 15 #616 Another Wrinkle Smiley magoo252(a)comcast.net

Missing out!

Was in Ontario the last 2 days and too long meetings didn't allow me to call Bob and go to the M Boat shop. Now am flight delayed and overnighting in Denver. Sure wish it had happened earlier in the day. Could have visited Sage Marine. #badtiming Bill Wickett

David, I encased the lower portion of Dauntless' rudder in fiberglass using epoxy resin. After that was well cured I then used 4 or 5 coats of Interlux 2000E epoxy barrier coat. Since I keep the boat in the water about 5 months a year I then used a couple of coats of Interlux VC 17 which works well in the fresh water where I keep her slipped. You can see the process I went thru on the website... _www.havasumontgomerys.piczo.com_ (http://www.havasumontgomerys.piczo.com) and look under the refurb section. Not saying that this is THE way to do this. Just the way I did it. By the way, the varnish used on the upper portion of the rudder is Interlux "Perfection" 2 part epoxy varnish. Expensive and a bit more trouble to work with, however, the rudder is just now approaching needing to be redone and it has been in the AZ sun for 6 years. I have been very happy with the product. Rudder finish

I'd like to hear what Monty owners use for a finish on their rudders. I leave my M17 on a mooring in fresh water five months a year. You can't use marine spar varnish below the water line. Clear epoxy turns cloudy and looks ugly after a few months in the sun. What do folks use? David Hill M17 Grouper
