hey ya, some LAST minute music info here; just passing this just-received word along, for whatever it's worth. :-) FYI, James Kirchmer p.s. - pls pardon me if this notice is arriving "after the fact" :-( TONIGHT, Wednesday, April 28th at the lo_fi Performance Gallery (((Seattle, WA))) www.lofiseattle.org 429b East Lake Avenue - 9:30pm, $5 SHANIR EZRA BLUMENKRANZ (bass) EVYIND KANG (viola) TIM YOUNG (guitar) Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz -- acoustic/electric bass, oud -- was born in 1975 in Brooklyn, NY. Shanir has studied at the Manhattan School of Music, Rimon School of Music in Israel, and holds a B.A. in Performance from Berklee School of Music in Boston, Mass were he graduated summa cum laude. "Satlah" with Daniel Zamir, Kevin Zubek and Shanir on acoustic bass, released their self titled debut for Tzadik Records in 1999 and features John Zorn as a special guest. "Exodus", their second cd, was recorded live at Tonic in New York City. "Satlah's" their third cd for Tzadik, "Children Of Israel", features John Zorn and is produced by Bill Laswell. "Rashanim" with Jon Madof, Mattias Kunzli, and Shanir on electric bass, released their self titled debut for Tzadik in 2002 and features mix traslations by Bill Laswell. Other cds for Tzadik include a compilation of music by Israeli composer "Sasha Argov", a compilation of music composed by John Zorn called "Voices In The Wilderness" for the tenth year anniversary of his band "Masada", a compilation of unheard "Masada" compositions called "Unkown Masada", and a compilaton of music by Brazilian composer "Jacob Du Bandolim". Most recently, Shanir has recorded a cd for Nottwo Records called "Chinatown" featuring Daniel Carter, Kevin Zubek and Shanir on acoustic bass and oud. On Parralactic Records, Shanir played acoustic bass and oud on a cd called "Sextet 2003" feauring featuring Anthony Braxton and Sonny Simmons. Shanir has performed in many clubs and festivals around the world, including a concert for BBC Radio in London with John Zorn. Shanir is also a featured performer in the May 2000 issue of Bass Player Magazine. Shanir has performed and/or recorded with the Jazz Mandolin Project, Pharaoh's Daughter, George Garzone, Satoshi Takeshi, Hank Roberts, Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, Roy Campbell Jr., Tony Malaby, Will Connell, Jim Puglesie, Jamie Saft, Anthony Coleman, Mark Dresser, Anthony Braxton, Sonny Simmons, Ned Rothenberg, Marty Erlich, Trevor Dunn, Susie Ibarra, Michiyo Yagi, Kasu Uchihashi, Makigami Koichi, Cyro Baptista, Marc Ribot, Kenny Wollesen, Joey Baron, Eric Friedlander, Roberto Rodriguez, Louie Belogenis, Ikue Mori, and John Zorn. Eyvind Kang -- violin, viola, tuba -- was born in Corvallis, Oregon, but lived in several different cities, mostly in Canada, throughout his childhood. Nowadays, he lives on Washington's Vashon Island. Eyvind began studying violin in "Suzuki" method classes in Regina, Saskatchewan, at the age of six and learnt tuba in the school band at Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended high school in Edmonton, Alberta, and spent two years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton as a philosophy major before relocating to the Seattle area, where he has based his life for the past 10 years. He studied music at Seattle's Cornish College for the Arts between 1992 and 1994, in addition to studying violin privately, with Cornish professor (and jazz legend) Michael White. While still at Cornish College, Kang travelled to New York City, where he was introduced to John Zorn - and was able to perform and later tour with Zorn's game piece Cobra. Through this connection he met many artists with whom he still works with today, including Trey Spruance & Bill Frisell. In 1994, Kang received an Artist Support Program grant (from the Jack Straw Foundation) and used it to record the first seven of his series of musical compositions called "NADEs." This recording, 7 NADEs, was released on Zorn's Tzadik label in 1996, followed two years later by his Theater of Mineral Nades. In 2000 he released The Story Of Iceland, again on Tzadik, which was inspired by his time spent in Iceland as a child. Eyvind Kang has traveled to the far reaches of this planet: places like India, Italy, Iceland, and Australia, composing and playing his own material, and with countless other projects. He has played violin with John Zorn, The Bill Frisell Quartet, the Sun City Girls and Wayne Horvitz' 4 + 1 Ensemble, among others. Eyvind has also recorded & toured with Trey Spruance's Secret Chiefs 3 and performed on Mr Bungle's California. Tim Young -- guitar -- has been a familiar presence in the Northwest rock, pop, and jazz circles for over a decade and has also worked in the international realm in recent years, with Wayne Horvitz's Sweeter Than The Day, Zony Mash, and Mylab (co-led by Wayne & Tucker Martine), as well as David Sylvian (ex-Japan). A versatile and experienced guitarist, Timothy has not only starred with legendary Seattle rock/pop/punk bands the Scabs, Scallywags, Devilhead, Very Special Forces, and Los Parasitos, but has also played with pioneering jazz giants such as guitarist Bill Frisell, saxophonist Sam Rivers, trombonist Julian Priester, and violinist Michael White, whose new CD ("Voices" - Izniz Records) features Tim on acoustic guitar, alongside the classic rhythm section of Cecil Mcbee and Kenneth Nash. Other celebrated artists he's performed and recorded with include his longtime associate Paul Moore (with whom he currently co-leads both "V" and "Young & Moore"), Skerik, Eyvind Kang, Andrei Otraskin (in the "Guitar Monks" duo), Robin Holcomb, Eryn Young (in "The Youngs"), Aiko Shimada, the Young Composers Collective (now known as the Degenerate Art Ensemble), and Cambodian master musician Dr. Sam Ang Sam - with whom he toured for five influential years, performing the traditional Pin Peat repertoire. Tim is also currently leading the new band "Thruster", a very impressive instrumental "power-trio" featuring Kaveh Rastegar (Kneebody, etc.) on bass and Matt Chamberlain (Critters Buggin, etc.) on drums.

Zorn's extended techniques

I disagree with the comment about using extended techniques on the sax just souding like "zorn". First of all zorn is using many of the same techniques explored in the 60s and 70s by both american and european free jazz artists. What he has done is taken the technique and applied it in his own context. He sounds like himself. And if you can master these techniques and apply your own ideas you can sound like yourself and not zorn. Because he applied techniques that the likes of Parker, Brotzmann, ayler, et al doesn't mean he sounds like them. Zorn's magic is in his composition style. He was not chained to the jazz composition style and married influence from a great many areas. For sure he may have come up with new techniques on the horn but if one were to master these skills and play their own thing, surely they can sound like themselves. It is challenging but the uniqueness of sound is not dependant on technique as much as it depends on just the sheer creativity of the artist. Why are we still playing basically the same damn instruments for the past few centuries? Wouldn't it be silly to say the music of the past few centuries sounds all the same. Now maybe that is the land of new possibilities-new instruments. But my point is that using the technique of Zorn will not make you sound like Zorn. I get annoyed when people make comments like-this guys sounds like so-and-so. Like Matthew Shipp for example. He is so often said to be a Taylor emulate. But I am sorry, Shipp sounds like Shipp and I think quite distant from what Taylor does. One cannot doubt he is influenced by Taylor, but common! I think people don't listen well, and if they don't listen close they will say (and do) that all the music sounds the same. But one can say that about all classical music, or all heavy metal, or all what have you. And if that is the case, why listen to music at all if you are not going to really listen. You may not have meant what I am talking about but I had to vent this out, as I have heard similar comments much lately and had to let that out. Zorn's sax technique

Thanks everybody who answered, Zach, you can hear that "Prrrrt PchPeechee" (could be finnegans wake or a comic book, ;) ) at the beginning of The Art of Memory with Fred Frith. Colin, i think that what you explain is what I was trying to expose, because I saw a naked city video where Zorn put his horn near his leg to do the sound. I tried to imitate that but I failed. I'm gonna try. It's very difficult to have one's own voice in saxophone, what I 'd like is to articulate mine, but I'm just beginning to play ! And I would also like to know bebop language, rythm and blues etc. to have more ways of expression. Timbre is very important for me and Zorn is a great player in these (and other) terms. Hi! : I'd also like to learn some of the tricks Zorn makes with his horn. Particularly his propulsive, quasi percussive technique that goes like this : "PrrrrrrrrrrRt Pchhhht Ppp pPPp Pchhht" (sorry fot the transcription, i don't know how to describe it, I hope someone undestands me!) Evan Parker and Briggan Kraus also do this. It can be found in many Zorn recordings. My teacher doesn't know how he does it, he says that maybe playing very fast many notes and in the way he throws the air, he tried but he didn't succeed. Can anybody help? Elvin Jones

Yes, it's quite unfortunate they still drag Elvin all over hell's creation so we can watch this once vibrant drummer, struggle behind his kit. Really? This is his last wish to be behind the drum kit, fumbling with his sticks, his wife helping him sit down, while his fans look on... talk about a lasting impression, huh? No thanks, I'd rather listen to him wail all over Coltrane's Impulse catalog, before shelling out another $20, only to have his wife open up the show with an "announcement" about his last wishes, talk about a buzz kill. Fortunately, I had the chance to see Mr. Jones back in '95, and could tell back then it was pointless to have this guy put on a live show. I couldn't imagine his act being electrifying almost ten years later. I guess, I'm left wondering if this is really his last wish, or is the Elvin Jone's Camp just trying to squeeze more water (read: money) out of an old tired rag? Also touring, Bill Frisell at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight/tomorrow. Thanks to the Zorn-lister from Atlanta/Georgia(?) who mentioned checking out FANTOMAS. Caught them at the Fillmore last week, and their set is bad-ass!! Melt Banana opened up for them, and they totally shocked it!
