I saw morbid angel live last year and this guy doesn't just play fast for 1 min. He did it for 45 min straight. Ok this guy did a million beats in a mintue for a competetion but what good does that do in the real world? I never saw a one minute concert. Morbid angels drummer played fast as a rocket for 45 min straight. As a drummer of 18 yrs, i could not do anything but stand there with my jaw dropped because i can play a lot of the stuff he does but not for 45 minutes straight. Also, i believe manowar made guiness book of records for the fast drums in a song in 1991. I could be wrong.

there is a tremendous amount of great rock around, depending upon your conception of 'rock' music. Are we including punk rock, the indie music scene, etc?? One of the current developments that I have been most excited about is the mining of all of the post-punk, no wave era sounds. I can't count how many new bands are coming out with a Gang of Four influence tattoo on their foreheads (which frankly, IMO is a good thing). My recommendations: Rapture, Liars, !!!, Out H.U.D., Oneida, Interpol, Songs Ohia, Decembrists, Hot Hot Heat, Ted Leo, yes the Strokes and the White Stripes, the Locust, exploding hearts, clearlake, single frame, panthers, granddady, modest mouse, built to spill, etc., etc. Are these rock? Well, they certainly give me the same feeling I had when I was younger listening to Thin Lizzy or Led Zeppelin, despite the fact that they wouldn't make it on commercial rock radio (though living near detroit i have heard the white stripes on the dial a few times). n.p. I don't know if it's my age (in my 40's) or what but I am not excited about new 'rock.' RIght now I am sort of discovering what was left in the closet (rockabilly, 50's jazz, French pop from the 60's) and that is what turns me on now. Also I am into bands that have a visual sense - and for that reason I like The White Stripes. I have seen them live and they; were great - but to tell you the truth I much prefer to look at their photos than listening to their music. THe visuals excite me more than their songs. So in a nutshell the visual aspects of rock are important to me. Sometimes more important than the music. This is what I get for being raised in the glam era! The last album I bought with the masses was Radiohead's 'Kid A.' I eventually sold it - because I realize that I like Thom Yorke's voice and I like the band's melodies - but it doesn't grab me emotionally. It was pretty music - but for me it didn't have that edge. Or it wasn't twisted enough for my taste. So, the only artist I would buy now that is sort of big (at least he has a sizable cult) is Morrissey. I for sure will be one of those who will buy the new album when it first comes out. And speaking of Morrissey, anyone hear his 'Under the Influence.' It is a collection of his favorite music. It has of course New York Dolls, The Ramones, but also some obscure Rockabilly tunes. Including Charlie Feathers. Most of the rock-n-roll that I listen to is of the classic/established/singer-songwriter variety (Dylan, Springsteen, Kinks, Elvis Costello, REM, Richard Thompson, and a bunch of people I mentioned in an earlier posting connected to this thread) because what is marketed as "rock" these days on commercial radio stations all has the same pro-tooled/click-tracked/Scott Weiland-singing-into-a-can sound that grates on my nerves. But I must admit that some Radiohead is very very good as is some Beck. I also enjoy some so-called jam bands like moe and Sting Cheese Incident, but their grooves get old for me very very quickly. The other day I was dial surfing and happened across a song that sounded like no other that I'd heard on commercial rock radio in a long time. The song, it turned out, was by the White Stripes, a band whose first album I bought in reaction to the avalanche of critical praise it received, and sold within a week because it didn't grab me (I had the same experience with the Strokes). I h ave no idea what the name of the song I heard was, but I know it's off their new album. It was so refreshing to hear something that sounded different (at least different for my local rock radio station) that I nearly went out and bought it. As for Metallica's latest, I've only heard the title track, and while it may be a return to their pre-"Black Album" speeds and time changes, it doesn't hit me like those early albums. Occasional poster, long-time lurker. I'm going to de-lurk for a minute to put my 2 cents worth in on this "Rock" thread. The last 3 Radiohead albums get heavy play from me, but I think they are a little bit to far on the weird side of rock for most people. I'll probably get flamed to hell and back, as well as perma-banned from the zorn-list, but here goes... :-) As far as straight-up, fun, silly, rock-n-roll goes the one album that I keep coming back to is Andrew WK's "I Get Wet". It's just beautiful in in it's simplicity. It doesn't take itself too seriously. Out of 12 songs, there is only one that I don't like. As far as I'm concerned, it's pretty darn close to pop rock perfection. Also, at 35 minutes long, I like the fact that it bucks the trend where artists feel like they have to fill all 70 minutes of a CD.

When I was making the comment on rock in the first place I made a generally unfair staement regarding the listening habits of some of the people on this list. That was wrong, however what I did notice from the lists that almost nothing offered was current or recently released. That was the point I was trying to make. The listening tastes here are so far afield that none of us are really paying attention to the zeitgeist here. Sure , it's mostly crap, that's what my original point was: Nowadays , if you wanna rock, Tomahawk is probably one of the most attractive propositions. Mars Volta are really good as well, as one person has written and said.There are others, Melvins, Melt-Banana. I have nothing personal against anyone. I am sorry that my inarticulation caused such commotion. That being said, I still find the Foo Fighters/Tomahawk comparison a starnge one. Chalk it up to differing tastes, eh? Apart from Mars Volta, these bands are both quite strongly associated with Mike Patton (in the way that he has endorsed them, toured with them, and recorded with them). It's often the case on this list, in my opinion, that recommendations bear very strong relationships to things we already know and love. I agree, though, that all these bands are highly recommended (I haven't heard Mars Volta yet, though). If you wanna rock these days, there really are a million alternatives. I should not have to mention the obvious metal releases, but give the new Enslaved album "Below the Lights" a try and then tell me this is not one of the most enthusiastically written and played things you've heard this year. Another recent masterpiece is Melechesh's second outing, "Sphynx". And you should look no further than Opeth to see where the true brilliance of metal is heading (and it is not in the direction chosen by Metallica). Also, check out last year's "Remission" release by Mastodon, absolute brilliance. And Dillinger Escape Plan (ay, Patton reference there). Other bands of interest would include Isis (another Patton reference there), Queens of the Stone Age, Lightning Bolt, The White Stripes, etc. And since the almighty Prong are still around and are about to release a new album, I'd say definitely check them out (three of their new songs sounded great in concert last week). Never liked their music, but I wonder what Zorn thinks.
