I see Teo's point, totally. But I also think that enought time has elapsed and scholarly interest has endured to the point where we can peek behind the curtain without compromising the show. The first artist I remember as speaking out against box sets of this type was Merle Haggard. It was the last straw in terms of him dealing with major labels. His statement was to the effect of "I already said this wasn't worthy of release! What gives then to the right to put it out as something that represents my work?" After hearing "I'll be A Hero When I Strike", I concede his point as well. It's the ultimate modern dilemma for any western consumer. You don't get choice without someone being compromised, be it, intellectually, socially, or economically. Damn, I just morphed into Naomi Cambell! cheers bruno

The piece for voice (which is presented in two different versions) doesn't really work like nearly all of the rest of Niblock's stuff. While this work is an interesting collaboration and shows off some of singer Tom Buckner's unusual singing techniques, there's much less of a thick timbral drone and more audible performer choices in the recordings. People who are interested in what Phill's live presentations are like, might want to check out the new 2-sided DVD from Extreme, called the Movement of People Working, which presents some of his mid-1970s films with some of his music from the same period. The main differences, I suppose, from his usual "Music & Films" installations are that there's no way to alter the running order of anything, so you might get the wrong idea that particular musical pieces and particular parts of the films are somehow connected rather than presented arbitrarily & you probably won't play it as loudly as he would. Sax-o-drones

I forgot about ROVA, though I saw them do a great drone piece on Mt Tamalpais a few years back, w/ the ROVA guys stationed at the corners of the small amphitheater. Also worth a listen are AMM's "AMMMusic" and "The Crypt" CDs, big noisescape-type drones with Lou Gare on sax somewhere in the big scraping mess. And Nmperign, mustn't forget them - soprano sax and trumpet, not that you'd know by listening. Chris Selvig

I just picked up this Dave Holland CD and it's unbelievable. It really fills in a gap in my listening history. It's interesting that 3/4 of this group was part of Chick Corea's band Circle. I assume that the group formed as an offshoot of the Corea group (?) Were there any other albums recorded by this group? Live recordings? What happened next?
