has anyone else noticed that universal music group has taken to selling albums on ebay now? tons of box sets and whatnot. i don't know list on a lot of these products, but they don't seem to be much of a deal as the initial bid starts high and buy it now doesn't seem like it would be all that far removed from store prices. dave np - david reeves : in starless space

Time for my embarassing little secret: I'm a member of the Columbia House record club, mainly because you can get some mainstream stuff (and some not so like a Johnny Thunders box set) for cheap. Anyway, last week their Classical section disappeared from the website and some items that I was planning to buy suddenly became unavailable. I contacted Columbia House and they confirmed that they're removing the classical selections because they "haven't been able to provide the range of music that Classical buyers are looking for." Which translates as "we're not getting the range of money we'd like to see" since they don't have any trouble providing a range of, say, hip-hop which doesn't have a few centuries worth of back catalog. The DVD extras reveal as much about the process as the JJ box reveals about the process of editing down to the LP. Sum total = nothing. It's ALL here, then ends with the original. It's rather like putting out a DVD with every scrap of film thrown in. But lots of DVD extras are pretty much just that, lots of scraps. You are either gonna dig whatever they throw against the wall or your gonna pass on the whole thing. The big difference is that you can buy The Two Towers and enjoy the film without ever diving into the making of. Nobody's going to buy the JJ box just to hear the remastered original. Many DVD deleted scenes are explained by the director as to why they were cut, but I don't think we are going to hear much from Teo other than he hates this stuff. As a Miles fan, I wouldn't be without it. I sorta dig Coppola yakkin about "The Conversation" on the DVD commentary. Instead of stupid set-anecdotes like a lot of commentary tracks (including the Coens' "Man Who Wasn't There": great film, bland commentary), he actually talks about the motivations for shooting things a certain way and the methods for constructing the soundtrack. I understand Teo's point, but anyone buying this set has got to be 1) a Miles fan who, like myself, only sees this as a glimpse of what went on in the studio and not as a finished product 2) is almost certainly aware from previous boxes of what this is all about 3) and understands that Miles never would have let these boxes be put out (unless the $ was right). I believe that the DVD "behind the scenes reveal everything" phenomena (?) has had an effect on CD boxes of this sort. Not much is left to the imagination, just check out any DVD from The Matrix to The Lion King. Does Sony think anyone not familiar with Miles is going to buy these boxes? They can't be that stupid. So they are preaching to the converted who are looking for more of the same. Bring on "On the Corner!" Even neater was the fact that the two hardcore punk bands were not simply playing battle of the bands, but facing off like a Jamaican style sound clash, and being "dubbed" by Bepler or the sound designer, into the mediocre electronica, the concrete industrial sounds of Richard Serra working, and the other Order themes. The individual parts of any given punk band (bass, drums, guitar) were separated, isolated, used that way. The CREMASTER book is a big beautifully designed gush. Is New York really this bored? Interesting at best. Bepler's music for 5 is embarrassing low-rent Gorecki. -----s
