Charlie Parker: The Dean Benedetti Recordings (Savoy) -- Way beyond my budget in those particularly hand-to-mouth days, there was no discusion -- only ecstatic surprise when mom sent this to me. Not the best place to start with Bird, but for somebody who'd heard most of the available recordings -- and had spent 5- 10 years playing many of them over and over and over -- this was so incredible. So many things I'd never heard Bird play before. The relaxed, straight-forward Bird after being released from Camarillo. Then the more thrilling, stylized playing upon his return to NYC (and H). And of course, the whole thing of Benedetti mostly just recording Bird solos, the odd configurations that brought to this set, the various cross-referenced scorecards, the archaeological feeling to the thing....

It does suck that McCartney is trying to change the credits on the Beatles songs. Even though I'm a fan of his, I do not think it reflects well on him. It's petty, ego-driven and childish. Not the kind of behaviour you expect from a distinguished elder gentleman. That being said, he is a human being, not a saint. Lennon himself was far from a saint. These were(are?) 2 immensely talented guys with good hearts who occasionally fuck up and do or say things that make us cringe. It sucks because we want to be able to enjoy their music free of any negative thoughts or emotions. Alas, this is not the case. Great artists, like great statesmen (Martin Luther King, Bill Clinton), usually have some bad marks against their names. I watched McCartney's tv concert and enjoyed the hell out of it. I even cried at one point (at the point where Paul himself almost broke into tears.) And I've been rocking out to the album. It's turned me into a Beatlemaniac all over again. But as much as I want to think of McCartney as a god, he's not. Gods are imaginary. Art is not.

Hello, ....back in the early '90s my housemates at the time pooled together and bought me the 9CD "Complete Stax Volt Singles 1959-1968". It's an embarrassment of riches, let me tell you. Runners up: "Chess Blues" 4CD, "Live at the Knitting Factory" Vols. 1-5, and "Nuggets II" (last year). I remain.... Is there any truth to the story (and I think I may have read this from the recent Rolling Stone) that during the Beatles Anthology project Paul wanted 'solo songwriting credit' on certain Beatles songs i.e. Yesterday, etc.? Mimicry is also in cahoots with the macabre, obsessive, extremely talented, and just-plain-fucked Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum, whose first Mimicry Release is slated for late 2003. Having sprouted a deranged cult following over the past few years, this band's live shows are the stuff of legend, and their CDs masterpieces of self-production on par with Olivia Tremor Control and Mr. Bungle. After you swallow that next bite of Krispy Kreme, say "work ethic" and think good thoughts about STGM. in no particular order, except #1 is definitely my top record of the year: Cinematic Orchestra: Every Day: Amazing disc, every time I try to describe it it ends up sounding less good than it really is, but here's an attempt. Imagine Gil Evans arranging for Portishead, but with Fontella Bass on vocals (she's actually on the record). Downtempo groove jazz/electronica, but done so much better than most of the genre, one of the very few records ever without a single note out of place. My wife loves this record, so I must have heard it a few hundred times this year, and I still like it a lot. Joni Mitchell: Travelogue: I just got this, but it hasn't left my player for the last week. Beautiful stuff, in particular, the arrangement and her performance of Woodstock (not exactly a song that I thought would still have relevance today) is worth the price in itself. Tabla Beat Science: Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove. OK, so I'm an unrepentant Laswell apologist, but this set just burns from beginning to end. DJ Spooky: Optometry. Another jazz meets electronics project, and possibly the best thing Spooky's done thus far. Tim Berne: Science Friction: I haven't ordered Open Coma yet, which is why it didn't make my list, but this quartet set (w/Ducret/Taborn/Rainey) just flat out rocks! Taborn in particular sounds great here, once again he and Jamie Saft top my list of interesting new keyboardists. Amon Tobin: Out from Out Where: Tobin is still exploring the same territory, drum 'n bass constructed out of jazz and exotica records from the 50's/60's, but just keeps getting better.The Nutcracker suite even makes an appearance here, in case you're looking for new seasonal music. Blackalicious: Blazing Arrow: In a just world, this would have topped the hip-hop charts, it's smart. positive without being preachy, funny and has Gil Scott Heron at least sounding coherent. I sell a copy of this almost every time I play it in the store, one of the few discs that both the hip hop kids and their parents dig. Replicant Rumba Rockers: A Rather Interesting Mix: One of the hundred or so Burnt Friedman/Atom Heart related discs this year, I swear, these guys are almost as productive as Laswell in his prime. This disc takes on Latin pop, and the quality of the sampling/collaging approaches Amon Tobin, but with a sense of humor, just the right balance of cheese and seriousness. hey there, im wondering if anyone knows anything about this (vida blue remixes). for those of you who dont know, vida blue was phish's keyboard player's experiment with techno/electronics. they released a self-titled album this year, apparently there is also a remix ep, featuring remixes by dj olive, bill laswell and jamie saft?? anyone? thanks, ari
