A BOOKSHELF ON TOP OF THE SKY 12 STORIES ABOUT JOHN ZORN A FILM BY CLAUDIA HEUERMANN SHORT SYNOPSIS: During the past two decades the New York composer and musician John Zorn became a cult figure in the modern music world. He invents his own musical rules, and his unusual collages and sound combinations often serve to explain postmodernism. But who is John Zorn? What does he think, how does he work? Zorn followed his ideas from the beginning without compromise. And these ideas are based on something deeper and more intense than just sounds, or musical terms. He created his own world, full of fascinating and also radical ideas. More than a decade ago filmmaker Claudia Heuermann heard about that world, and listened to this music, which would change her life completely. A BOOKSHELF ON TOP OF THE SKY begins exactly at that moment. The 12 episodes of the film do not only portray John Zorn. They also tell the story of a meeting between cinema and music, in which the director appropriates the aesthetic qualities of the composer to liberate herself from all restraints. Once again before the new year begins, I must mention Larry Young's out-of-print-since-1973 Lawrence of Newark, on the Perception label, rereleased in 2002 by Sanctuary Records. A little disappointing that it hasn't cropped up on any top ten lists, YET... Has ANYONE else HEARD this? It's cheap (under $13), and unfortunately it includes no bonus material so it's pretty short, less than 40 minutes. Early NYC downtown fusion at its best. Not to nag about an ancient group on something, but isn't McCartney's insistance in having his name first on certain Beatles songs sort of... silly and sad. Here's a man who is no. 1 tour money maker of the year, an established (he he ) composer, etc and etc. And here he complains about his name not being first on the credit sheet. Pretty much everything out on disc now is excellent, but a few are oop already ("Written In Blood", "Tearing Up Your Plans" etc.) I would say you should try and grab the "...Kill To Forget" CD on Jinx (in print, available from peeps like Self Abuse, Malignant etc.), which is a quality introduction. I can hardly claim to have heard enough of the many releases from this year to claim any sort of best status, but the list below is the best of what I heard. I think though a case could be made for the 'Improvised Music from Japan' 10 CD box set as the best release of the year. This is an essential document of the culmination of 20th century musical deconstruction. I think you're being too hard on Skeleton Key. Certainly not "prog-rock." They do have a bit of that spark that lacks most bands that would fit in their genre. I mean, really, Helmet or Tomahawk or Quicksand really didn't do anything that crazy, but they played rock that was good. That's pretty rare in and of itself. It's so hard to find simple music worth listening to. Hell, the Melvins and Sonic Youth could be called "alterna-rock" on some of their stuff. Still worth listening to though. You're right though, Sleepytime Gorrilla music certainly is better (though I've never seen them live, everything that I've heard has been phenomenal). And Secret Chiefs 3 is da shit. Skeleton Key was a dissapointment. If you would take away the found metal banging you end up with what sounds to me as very conventional "alternative rock". Had to leave the room after a couple of songs. Meanwhile, Art Rock is alive and well with Sleepytime. There's a fine RIO slant on their music but with a more aggressive attack. Reminds me of the Art Bears or Thinking Plague with some Crimson power chords and a Bay Area sensibility (Caroliner, Thinking Fellers, etc.). Carla (from Tin Hat Trio) is phenomenal. She was flying on the violin from the opening song (blissful) on. Great stage presence, quite theatrical. Prog rock without the cheese. Their album doesn't completely do it for me. Most of it is great except for some moments that border on "rap metal" (the most horrible hybrid I can think of), but even these sounded good rearranged live.
