hello, and happy new year. i've alluded a bit to my new online venture, and here it is. an online cd store (www.squidco.com) where you'll find a healthy stock of tzadik, ambiances magnetiques, victo, chadula and other titles (and eugene chadbourne and ambiances sales currently underway). we've also launched an online magazine, the squid's ear (www.squidsear.com) of particular interest to zlisters is your chance to interview ikue mori. we're collecting questions by email, which ms. mori has kindly agreed to answer. the e-interview will be published in february on the site. follow the 'e&a' link for details and instructions on sending your questions. here's the blurb, more about the mag: Happy New Ear! Today we are launching The Squid's Ear, an online magazine featuring articles and reviews about much of the music available at Squidco, and much more. It also includes the first installments of two columns written by musicians. 'Instrumental' is a section where musicians will write about their instruments of choice, and the first installment is the great Jon Rose on the violin. BTW, I'm a musicienne/college DJ and none of my loved ones EVER buy me rekkidz either. Guess they figure only I know what I want & already have. As a result of this regular occurrence, I had to splurge ($$$) at Sound Exchange (in Houston). Got a weird Pantone Color Wheel CD there on Weego, not Mego. When I was getting into jazz for the first time, and still, the Morton/Cook PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ was/is indispensable. The various editions don't necessarily supersede one another completely, as earlier editions cover some vinyl and labels that don't get much play in later editions. Morton/Cook are absolutely partial and sometimes eccentric, always opinionated, but incredibly knowledgeable and seldom glib or dismissive. I also enjoyed the one-volume first edition of the Rough Guide to World Music, which is fairly well-balanced between record guide and world traditional/popular musics primer. So here is my best of list for 2002 - #1 Album of the year goes to Eyvind Kang's "Live Low to the Earth in the Iron Age" on Abduction Records. The most beautiful album on the planet, ever. Other favorite albums of 2002 are: (no order) Sun City Girls - High Asia Lo Pacific Sun City Girls - WAH Vincent Gallo - Recordings of Music for Film SUNN 0))) - Flight of the Behemoth Melvins - Hostile Ambient Takeover Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine - Rampton Best Shows of the Year - #1 Show of the Year goes to Sun City Girls 11/02/02 at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco (2nd Night of the SF shows) Fuck. This show absolutely changed my life. I have never seen or heard anything like this. (no order) SUNN 0))) at the Blackbird in Portland Oregon. Black Frames at the Owl and Thistle in Seattle last month. Earth at the Rebar in Seattle. Melvins at Hells Kitchen in Tacoma WA. Art Ensemble of Chicago at On the Boards in Seattle. Eyvind Kang at Bottom of the Hill in SF. Best Movies - Jackass: The Movie Bowling for Columbine Standing in the Shadow of Motown Best TV Show - COPS Best book - I only read old books.... Things I am done with in 2002 - Star Wars (Episode 2 was the final straw. And fuck the SPECIAL EDITION of the real trilogy) KISS (goddamnit Gene Simmons!!! Give me back my memories.) Ozzy Osbourne (Not only are you an MTV darling now, you fucking remastered Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Oz with NEW?!?!?! Bass and Drum tracks...!?!?!!) Things I just caught on to in 2002 - Ennio Morricone Satyajit Ray Latin Playboys The Music of Makran compilation HO #1 Roady music from Vietnam compilation Nigeria 70 compilation Things I cannot wait for in 2003 - an album by "The Apes of Wrath" the greatest hardcore band ever. Imagine all of the "boring" parts removed from Fantomas, Melt Banana and old Bad Brains. (of course there are no boring parts...but just imagine!) James Davis/Solid Gold/Diamond Vincent - "Voyage to Homo Island" fuck South Park...this is the real deal. Eyvind Kang "Virginal Co-Ordinates" - with Mike Patton and Timothy Young and tons of other people...this record is sweeeeeet.
