Turntablism request

Greetings out there: I was wondering if anyone could send some good reccommendations (and links / websites etc. to more info regarding) for experimental music with turntables. I recently saw the documentary "Scratch" and I was familiar with most of the hip hop oriented turntabilists (Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, Rob Swift, Dj QBert, Mixmaster mike, etc..) but was wondering if anyone could point me to the more experimental side of turntable music. \The only one that I can think of would be like Christian Marclay or maybe evolution control committee or John Oswald (although I think those guys are more samplers than turntablists) I will use any suggestions and include them in my upcoming radio shows for The PCP House of Coffee, an experimental and creative music program. Hi, One of my favourite Ruins CD's is the CD on the Japanese Bloody Butterfly label: Early Works: Live & Unreleased Tracks (ZIKSBB 004) This CD features their first live gig in 1986 and 17 unreleased tracks (with John Zorn playing on 3 of them) The sound quality is not great, but the energy is there! It was released in 1991 and is probably difficult to get, but still... Maarten Hepp

My dream is to see Eyvind Kang / Timothy Young / Skerik / Earl Harvin and Shahzad Ismaily cover the first two songs on Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Visions of the Emerald Beyond". That, I think would be the shit! And I second the motion that Eyvind's "Live Low" album is the BEST album of 2002. About Merz: Aqua Necromancer uses samples from many old classic prog albums. Hence the "tribute" aspect, even though it's all quite noisified. Same concept with Doors Open at 8AM: free jazz samples, including a killer version of Coltrane's "Africa Brass Session". Again, super noisy and un-recognizable, but excellent. Oh and one more Merzbow recommendation: Oersted, on Vinyl Communications... really heavy and strong. Good luck finding it though... Just a few quick words about the Ruins (even though everyone seems to have their own opinion indeed): I really like Burning Stone and Hyderomastgroningem even though they're quite different, and samples of Tzomborgha I've heard sounded great, like a better Vrresto. One rarely mentioned is Pallachstom, also good. Relaxing Kang, Ryuichi Ruins,Bendian's Mahavishnu

In terms of relaxing music my choice is Eyvind Kang's latest "Live Low to the Earth, in the Iron Age". Lifts me up to the heavens, totally transcendental. Possibly my choice for best of 2002. Watching him and the Neti-Neti band perform this live in San Francisco opening for Sun City Girls was sublime, dreamlike. In terms of the Ruins my choices are "Burning Stone" and "Graviyaunosch". world premiere of Goetia

A review of Jennifer Koh's recital at the Miller Theatre, which included the world premiere of Zorn's Goetia: Incantations for Violin, appears in the New York Times today: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/12/12/arts/music/12JENN.html I would like to make a few comments as well. The program as a whole was remarkable and appropriately entitled "New York Hardcore." Goetia sounded fresh while maintaining Zorn's signature style. Each incantation seemed designed to produce a particular effect or solve a problem with a violin technique in mind, perhaps as a means to describe different spirits/demons from the Goetia book. The opening involved flashy, spastic gestures and bold slides reminiscent of rock music. The other movements consisted of contrasting ideas such as a warm harmonized theme primarily in a low register, rapid sequences, pizzicato with strumming, and an expressive recapitulating finale. With Goetia Zorn proves once again that he is gifted at writing for strings and has much left to say as a composer. I predict Goetia will be programmed frequently, not only because of its interest on a musical level, but also because it seems like a fun albeit challenging piece to perform. Jeni
