Talk of new recordings by Meredith Monk and Heiner Goebbels has peaked my interest in both composers, though I've heard nothing by them. Are MERCY and EISLERMATERIAL (sic) good places in to their respective soundworlds, ro can I do better elsewhere? Also, I've really enjoyed Giya Kancheli's "Styx" (Deutsche Grammophon, 20/21 Series) and ABII NE VIDEREM / TWO PRAYERS (ECM). What is essential by this composer? Also, this might have been broached not long ago, but other than the excellent Berkshire Record Outlet, are there less-obvious (than Tower, Amazon, etc.) places for online mailorder of classical music? Finally, this might not be appropriate, but I'll take the chance of pointing out Drimala Records' pretty steep discounts on everythig they sell, up till Christmas Eve. DMG is announcing that they will move soon. >The sound quality is not great, but the energy is there! That's very typical of Ruins. Unfortunately, while Yoshida is a master drumemr and composer, he is a pretty crap producer. It's really a shame, and one of the reasons while Ruins are so much better live than on CD. "Burning Stone" has a great, thick rock sound, and also "Tzwomborgha" sounds surprisingly good. Hi, The Brubeck cover is totally different from the normal Ruins material. In fact, I'd say it's one of their most unusual things so far. Anyway, I recommend the following: "Burning Stone" (Very rockish, and more simple than the later stuff" "Pallascthom" or "Tzwonborgha" for their newer stuff. The live one on Tzadik, because you get them in full force And be sure to get the versions released by Yoshida himself (available through his webpage) They have cooler covers, and often excellent bonus material. But nothing beats seeing them live. It's so much better than any recording.
