Yes! I am very interested in hearing about the new Painkiller as well. I saw that Downtown Music Gallery had it, but went to go pick up at my local record store (which normally stocks all the Tzadik stuff) and couldn't find it. Sadly, Berkshire is out of this particular set, thought they've got lots of other Brilliant bax sets. I checked just yesterday before recommending it, since they used to carry it for $22.99. Also, correcting myself, it's the WDR Symphony, not the NDR. My bad. And finally, Lang, if it helps, the label is Brilliant Classics, the catalog number is 6275, and the distributor is Empire, based in New York City. That might help your store out. Most Crucial

I was listening to the first Death Ambient release today for the first time in ages and started thinking about what were for me the most crucial releases on Tzadik, Avant or DIW. So I thought I ask the group. What for you are the most important releases on these labels, perhaps a top ten with reasons as well. Probably a dumb thread for many, as lists tend to be, but my curiosity was earnest. I look forward to any and all replies. NP: Otomo Yoshihide, Cathode, Tzadik (Definitely on my top ten list)

... I've got to mention a stunning new bargain I've just discovered. If you're a Shostakovich fan, or if you've just heard a few of his symphonies and feel like exploring further, there's a new complete cycle on the market that just has to be mentioned. For those not familiar with Shostakovich's symphonies, suffice it to say that while hardly experimental in the conventional sense, this is probably the most important symphonic cycle of the 20th century. The composer's struggle to be creative and truthful in the face of a repressive regime is well documented and palpable throughout the entire series. Rudolph Barshai conducts the NDR Symphony Orchestra in all 15 symphonies in a new boxed set available on the Brilliant Classics label. The symphonies themselves can be uneven, but they're all worth hearing, and Barshai's interpretations are all extremely well conceived and executed... small wonder, since he worked so extensively with the composer. You might find better recordings of the individual symphonies (I know I'd never want to be without Bernstein's recording of number 5, for instance), but this is just one of the best executed cycles I've ever heard, well recorded and exceptionally well played. It would take far too long to break down the individual highlights, but the 5th is a particularly strong version (lacking the reckless bravado of Bernstein in the final movement, but taken at a much more sensible pace that's equally valid and probably more faithful to the composer's intent) and even the problematic Soviet-futurist 2nd and 3rd come off as worth hearing. I'm only up to 8 (since yesterday!) and nothing has let me down, and reviews have indicated that the final three symphonies are worth the price of admission alone. Mojo isn't entirely backwards looking and certainly delves into the obscure though you usually can't tell this from the cover - its the first place I read about Jandek which is clearly something. I second Steve's recommendation of the Barshai/NDR cycle of the Shostakovich symphonies--the symphonies as well as the recordings. (And: my parents dragged me as kid to many NDR recitals, "my" state radio orchestra ....) Has anybody explored the releases of Brilliant Classics in more detail? They have a ton of stuff, all at least as cheap or cheaper. I tend to be a little put off by the limited or non-existent documentation, etc., and recognize few of the performers (of course, this says more about me than about BC). The more I think about it, the more this set pisses me off... not because it's no good, but because of the many missteps and squandered opportunities. First, we know, we know, we KNOW that Fripp didn't really care much for this particular band. But when it comes to a commercial CD release, honestly his opinion isn't as important as ours, and it's disappointing that he continues to shortchange this frequently infuriating but often brilliant lineup. Honestly, the '69 band got four copiously annotated discs in the 'Epitaph' set and the '74 band got four discs in the 'Great Deceiver' set PLUS 'USA' and 'The Night Watch.' Even the '84 band, which hardly improvised at all, got two discs in 'Absent Lovers.' This band, on the other hand, gets only one disc and one quasi-remix disc, and we're not even told where each track hails from - it took a bunch of geeks (like me) sitting around doing A-B comparisons with this band's four Collector's Club releases to figure out what came from where. And since this disc does have at least SOME previously unreleased and historically important material from the band's earliest performances at the Zoom Club in '71, at the VERY least that material (likely just one track, but still) should have been identified. Adding further insult, the first disc features truncated tracks almost entirely - "Formentera Lady" is actually listed as being abridged, but there's an entire verse missing from "Cirkus" and bits chopped out of "Groon" and "21st Century Schizoid Man," too. "The Sailor's Tale" is some kind of weird Frankenstein graft of the intro and outro from one show's version and the guts of a version from another show. And it's just a slap in the face to folks who haven't ponied up for the Collector's Club to get only 49 seconds of the brilliantly twisted 12-bar blues version of "The Court of the Crimson King" (originally issued on 'Live in Detroit 1971'). We could have used a bit more imagination and common sense in the programming department, too. It would have been nice to get an authorized live release of the title track from "Islands" (otherwise available only on boots) - and I'd have happily sacrified either this particularly lugubrious version of "Cirkus" or the always unspeakably awful "The Letters" to have it. And it's really odd that a set called 'Ladies of the Road' doesn't include the title track, even if that's the one track by this lineup that most people will have already heard. The "Schizoid Men" disc is great fun, but even here, Fripp manages to be his usual fussy, inscrutable self. Following the opening of "21st Century Schizoid Man," we get 40-plus minutes of screaming improv. Then all of a sudden the track just ENDS, without resolving into the conclusion of the song. We get a full minute of silence, and then another ten minutes of improvs crash in as a "bonus track"... and still doesn't resolve into the end of the song. I''m still a fanboy and a fanatical admirer of Fripp's playing, but sometimes I just want to SMACK him, you know? Instead of genuine excitement at the prospect of a new release, increasingly I feel like I'm settling for being "happy with what you have to be happy with"...
