I would agree, it sounds like a phone line issue. An external of any major brand might help. Having an external with it's own Power, Pump, Controller, and DSP is often helpful in improving or stabilizing a connection. Typically once we determine that it is likely the phone line, we send a test modem out and see if it improves the connection at all. We use two external modems for situations like this, the older USR Sportster 5686-03, and the newer V92 Zoom 3049. The Zooms can be picked up retail at about $66 and they work pretty well. Not sure what an older USR goes for. Have you checked the line to find the Signal to Noise Ratio? Frequency probe levels? http://www.totalscrutinizer.com/ might be something that could help you. Download the demo and email me for the newest beta. It will give you SNR, Freq. Probe Levels, and more. He has managed to connect a couple of times, but now it will not verify his login at all. His modem is a lucent win modem. It will connect but it will not verify his username and password. And it takes an extremely long time to try to verify his username and password before it fails. The message is usually that the remote computer did not respond. I have tried lowering the baud, but this did not work either. I told him to call the phone company (CenturyTel), which he did. They say that the lines are ok and it must be my equipment. I have taken my laptop out to his house and can connect every time but only at a speed of 20.something. From my house in town my laptop will connect at 48.8. I do not here any static on his line thru the phone, but I do here a small amount of hum. I called my buddy that works for the local phone company and he said that the lines in that area are run to local box and connect back to the co via a t1. He also said they have run a loop test at the customers house and that checks out. 3 out of 4 customers I have in that same area have had the same problems. I do not know what speed the one customer connects at, but he has never called to complain about anything. Could there be something not set right with my chassis? Anyone else had a problem like this? How to disable cleartext logins?

How can I disable cleartext logins on chassis with HiPer DSPs and HiPer ARC? It's only default and manage user in users table. All ports are for dialin/ppp. Only chap/ms-chap are enabled.

Timeslot is always showing DialingIn

We are connected to DMS-100 PSTN by E1/R2. This chassis is tcs 4.3. I have got at least 2 timeslots that always show status: DialingIn. No established/failed connections is on this timeslots assigned modem (I use fixedAssignment). What can cause that state? And what does ds0ReceivingBlock mean? Sometimes I get this state on almost all timeslots. Thanks, alex.

DMS-100 and TC

I've run into the problem in the past putting a card with TCS 4.5 in a box with HARC/HNMC TCS 4.0, the DSP wouldn't ever boot properly. Perhaps there is something in the 4.5 HDSP code that is dependant on the HARC code? I've also had the problem with my HNMC being of lower TCS version than the DSPs and even though the card would boot, I never got anything but a Question Mark in TCM. DS0 Receiving Block ?

This TC is connected to DMS-100 PSTN (E1/R2). When I check performance of DSP's DS0 Timeslot Status it shows something like DS0 Receiving Block. What does it mean? Is it a problem? (If yes how to solve it?). Thanks, alex

NFAS - Yea or Nay

Hello, this is my first post to the list. Next week, we'll be moving from individual PRI's to a channelized DS3. During the move, we are considering enabling NFAS (we have 14 PRI's). I've browsed the archives for this list, and the consensus seems to be that NFAS isn't worth the trouble. I'd like to hear pros and cons concerning NFAS. Our telco is SPRINT, and the folks in the translations department have always done a good job in the past. However, we can't afford any mess-ups with this conversion. They are itching to build the new circuits, and I have to let them know soon whether we want NFAS. Also, any tips (TC configuration, etc.) would be welcome.
