R: [Police] Money for Something
Hello everybody, Giovanni here. Long time no news from me..... Just a short note about the 'money issue' with Sting getting paid that much for a private concert deal. He's never been too far from this, he's done things like that in the past for important names of the arabic world (sheiks) and I'm sure none of us would say no to such great amount of money...or am I wrong??? Of course it's a sort of slap in the face comparing to people like most of us that works hours and hours a day to get a few bucks in our pockets, but I think that nobody ever gave something for free to Sting to arrive where he is now. He did his choices in the past, he gave up fighting for a certain kind of life up in Newcastle, betting on his own....you know how many people failed doing the same? Well, he made it and why should he now say no to what he fought for for year? All of us wold do it I'm pretty sure about this, let's all be more realistic....like it or not....and getting some money out of Bill pockets isn't that tragic, what do you think? He has those money..and I think he spent them very well this time.... Let me see what I have in my pockets....ok, not even enough to have Sting here to play one single note....ahahahah! But that's not true....I will spend 40 Euros to have him playing in Milano on November 30th, and he will sing many more songs in front of the crowd in Milan.....what a greedy man am I... He's not only one lucky bastard, but a greedy one too! Hope he makes a lovely donation to the rain forest. :) Let the sell-out/ not a sell-out thread begin!! Microsoft head Bill Gates is reportedly paying just under $500,000 to have Sting perform a handful of songs (I heard it was 8) at his upcoming 50th birthday party. The party is to take place later this month at the uber-swanky Supper Club in New York... Veteran rocker Sting will earn a staggering $486,000 (380,000) this month, when he plays at a party being thrown by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates. The former Police frontman will play just eight songs at the New York event, thereby earning $60,750 (47,500 )per track. Gates, 49, is hosting the bash at the city's Supper Club to celebrate his 50th birthday.
Giovanni: I agree with several of your points, and your response was well-written and filled with good humor, but I would respectfully ask Sting how much money is enough? To ask whether we would accept Mr. Gates' offer is an unfair question, as it ignores the vast fortune Sting has amassed over the last 25 years. A half-million dollars is a far greater sum to we who subscribe to this list than it is to him. He's certainly welcome to the fortune he's earned, but is there any other reason why Sting would play such an event other than pure greed? "Forever conditioned to believe we can't live We can't live here and be happy with less So many riches, so many souls Everything we see we want to possess..." Why, Sting, did you become so completely focused on money after you became wealthy? And did that obsession play a role in robbing your music of the joy it once had? Hi Ted. "Forever conditioned to believe we can't live We can't live here and be happy with less So many riches, so many souls Everything we see we want to possess..." Why, Sting, did you become so completely focused on money after you became wealthy? And did that obsession play a role in robbing your music of the joy it once had? I guess we don't have to consider lyrics as personal issues; sometimes they are, sometimes they might be referred to certain stories even not personal; Stewart Copeland used to tell me that most of the Police songs were driven to a different direction when they realised being too close to personal stories. I trust in the musical activities of Sting, that's what I need from him; I trust his honesty in writing good music, I like his attitude towards music, it's plain to see he does albums believing completely in them, whether people like them or not; you can read between the notes that not that much has changed from the past, his spirit is really sincere; what might have changed is the businness, what goes around in the music market has changed a lot, and I can tell that as an insider of this biz. He got to stay close to some kinda move, but that's another story; what I think we must consider is the way he does music; there are so many artists that we don't know anything about their private life, but we love their music; who care what they do in thier private life? At least, in our case as Sting fans, we also know many other things, and if we know them it means Sting is very open to people, and that's another good quality I think. What he wants to keep it secret....he has the way to keep it secret for sure.
