A WrinkleBoat welcome to Steve Varley, the latest entrant - sailing a M-15 from AZ - in the 2013 WrinkleBoat Intergalactic Championship Regatta & Ran-Tan ! We are awaiting the registration of some additional committed boats (two 'unique' M-17's) and a possible local boat or two to round out the fleet. (looks like 11 on the line minimum!) Battery Location

My M-17 had three battery locations set up. The past owner experimented with multiple batteries for extended trips and the need for extended battery power. He had the original Port location forward of the Port locker plus additional full size deep cycle marine batteries on each back corner of the cockpit. I think he was worried about battery fumes from charging. This may be a concern for you as well if you run a gas stove as we do by the sink in the cabin. We also installed a water tank at the bow under the V berth. We only use the original Port battery location as we did not like the weight at the back. We also have a solar charger that does a good job of keeping up with our needs. We are also going to be converting lighting to LEDs. So I was polling to see if there have been any other battery locations, other than the factory set up, which puts the battery port side. I think I know where it can go, forward. Will involve setting a new battery shelf with tie downs in thickened epoxy over the centerline forward. Will have to be able to access it for seasonal removal, or topping up. Will run new longer battery cables aft to the panel and charger. Has anyone else done this? To answer your question Dave about the pan liner. No, it does not extend forward of the aft bunk bulk head. Under the V berth is just the hull, no liner. There are plywood shelves for the battery and under the pottie hatch. We use Wag Bags so use the pottie location for other storage when cruising. Mostly my wife's storage. I have a bin down the port qberth. Message-ID: <1354831734.10231.YahooMailClassic(a)web121705.mail.ne1.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Bill: wondered for your boat as my M17 has a fiberglass pan that goes way forward under the bow with spaces/nooks/attachments for potti, mast compression post, battery and a 'shelf' ... always guessed it was for a water tank. i say if you are willing to take on the project move the battery on your boat. just build a pad, that you fiberglass to the hull, so you can attach the battery security strap. put it as far forward as you can reach (for both installing the pad and then reaching the battery). i suggest you use a battery box with straps -- secures the batter and a protection against acid spills (if wet cell) and keeps other items from getting in contact with the battery pos and neg posts. be sure that you don't make the pad to high that the battery box will not fit. getting longer positive and negative leads isn't difficult. west marine may have 'stock' sizes that are long enough. just take your current leads with you to confirm the lugs are the correct size. moving the battery would free up the port-aft 'locker' of the v-berth for easy access and, like you noted, be a good counter-balance to the crew in the cockpit. Already have the battery box w/ straps in the existing position. Will have to extend a couple of other smaller wires that are direct wired to the battery (w/ inline fuses). I think I would run all the cables up along the bottom of the V berth aft to the compression post area where the charger and panel reside. I followed your lead on sealing off the aft gas locker a few years ago. My name is Gary Froeschner. I recently purchased a 1976 Montgomery 17. I bought it in St. Paul, MN and towed it to my house in Columbia, MO. It is my first sailboat. I recently completed the first ASA course - Basic Keel Boat Sailing 101. So - I'm new at all of this. I will be sailing the boat primarily at The Lake of the Ozarks in MO, but plan on towing it other places too. The boat needs a fair amount of work. I have a boat load of questions. I hope I can have her ready for next season.

This morning, while clearing out some space in my shop for the upcoming Sage 15 I found a dusty box with some old paperwork, including a notebook entitled “history of changes”. Some of this might be interesting to some of you. If not, you have a delete button. I’m leaving out quite a bit because I know that nobody cares! M-17- # of boats made: 1973 7 boats 1974 44 boats 75 32 boats incl 2 flushdecks 76 44 boats incl 2 flushdecks 77 43 boats incl 4 flushdecks 78 19 boats incl 1 flushdeck 79 and 80- 42 boats 81 19 boats 82 20 boats 83 20 boats, slowly dropping after that. (Note the big drop in 75 and 78- these were the two oil crises! Note that production was reduced from one per week to one boat per two weeks; several of these years we shut down between Thanksgiving to New Year’s due to lack of business. Interesting times. (‘m astounded that we first started the 17 tooling in early Spring and shipped the first boat in October. Impossible! 7 months! That’s what happens when you have lots of good help working on tooling 40 hours a week, which was easy to come by in Costa Mesa in those days. The big companies were laying off people). M-15: Started tooling in June 81, two of us made the plugs working nites and weekends, guys in the mold shop did most of the finishing and mold-making. We finished the first boat Oct of the same year. Again, amazing what lots of help can do. 5 months! 1980 11 boats 81 78 boats 82 41 boats 83 34 boats 84 38 boats 85 32 boats, slowly dropping after that. Intereasting to note that the high point in national production was in 74, just before the first gas crunch. The high in numbers of non-aux sailboats was 121K boats if my memory is correct, and by the mid 80’s it was below 10K. Few of us were smart enough to figure out what was happening for years! (damn- looks like we’re having another bad year. Maybe next year). In the meantime builders were dropping like flies. In Oct 83 I changed the port seat locker to like the 17; cut out the box for access into a bilge locker. Way better, but cost more to build. Decided to do that after my first crossing of the Gulf in a 15- because it became very obvious that the extra storage was worth its weight in gold. Summer 85; # 335, Added 50 lbs of trim ballast forward, making total of 75, then changed 50 of that to a steel plate to make more room for those who wanted to install an elect pkg. The notebook had sat in various boxes in various places for almost 30 years and is quite tattered and some of the info was indecipherable, but it beats my memory! The problem when crossing a river bar isn't the size of the waves (easily handled on the open sea). It's the river current, tidal flow, shifting and shallow bottom along with the hard edges of the river reflecting waves. Coming in on an ebb tide is downright foolish in a small sailboat when a big swell is running (don't ask me how I know). It's like being in a washing machine with big waves coming from multiple directions and you're only able to make 1 or 2 knots over the bottom (even though you're doing 6 knots through the water). Each wave tries to turn you broadside to the next as they work to roll you over. By the way, the water is about 50° (in the summer) and if you go in you probably won't make it home (zero chance without a PFD)! The Umpqua river bar behaves like this too. We pick our days and times to cross with care realizing that when she turns foul its best to stay outside if you're out and inside if you're in!! Commercial fisherman cross whenever there is a chance to fish and sometimes pay a high price.
