Sorry about double posting and not responding in the right places, I'm not exactly sure how to use this list. Eldor, I'll be in the Dallas area for a couple weeks in June. Maybe we could sail together... find out which type of fixed keel is faster? though you probably have the advantage with experience. Ron you're more than welcome to come sailing with me if you can make it up there (and any other person interested in going). is there a way to post pictures, or do we just list links? we could take video and photos of our race. Since I'm out to sea, I couldn't give my girlfriend a traditional valentine's day...so for her present, I signed her up for this list! :) for my present, she picked up the tanbark sails I found online in San Diego. is there a way to respond to a certain response or does Keith sort everything?

Hello from the Pacific Ocean!

Hi from Jeremy and Griselda (Montomgery 17 #14, w/the original fixed keel).In January, I took Griselda out for her first sail in 20 years! She hit about 6.4 knots in about 15-20 knots of wind on Lake Lewisville in Dallas. She's currently parked on a trailer in Dallas, but will be moving to San Diego in June. I'm picking up my first purchase for Griselda since buying the boat from Ron down in Huntsville, TX...a set of tanbark sails that were made for a Cape Dory 19. I think they will look awesome with the dark green of Griselda's hull. I'm getting them for just $225! I don't think I'll need to do any alterations. I'm currently on a US Navy guided missle cruiser (the USS Chancellorsville) teaching college English to sailors. During my free time I am going to be learning fancy work to dress Griselda in all the finery she deserves! I am also thinking about making my own safety nets instead of buying them. One of the first things I'm going to learn is how to do wraps around poles (not to try to upstage Corndog, Larry!). I'm looking forward to joining the rest of the M17s in San Diego.

Tanbark sails

Hi Ron et al, In the other post I wrote, I mentioned more about the sails I purchased. They were made for a Cape Dory 19, and I knew when I bought them that they were smaller than the current sails. But, at only $225 total, I couldn't resist. I don't expect to use them in very light wind, but I think they will work great in 15-20 knots. When I had Griselda's current main and jib up in that much wind, I felt like the wind was overpowering the boat. I could have reefed down, of course, but I am still learning all of that stuff. Thanks for the input though! I do like the sails Griselda came with very much. I just "saw red" and I couldn't pass up two new sails for just $225.

Cabin heater for M17

For anyone who might have an interest, I put a propane heater aboard Cloud Girl, my 1985 M17 galley model, last year. Worked well during nights in the 30's (frost in the cockpit) where I sailed, at 8280 feet on Lake Granby, CO last season. The smallest heater was still overkill, but I don't need to crank it up, or use it long to get the effect needed (often just used the pilot light). One pound propane tank and regulator in the stern wet locker, single line run to the heater by the galley, only 2 connections that are easy to check. Yes...I handled the exhaust properly. I also am careful with ventilation. I don't sleep with it on either. Contact me off line if you wish; I could scan a couple of photos, I think. The biggest challenge was mounting it, which I did on an upside-down L-shaped sheet of stainless, anchored top and bottom. The space lost was no issue as I am a single-hander. I will be moving on to my next boat, a 1982 Cape Dory 25D, this season. I'm not ready to part with my little Cloud Girl yet, however. My last three seasons with her have been deeply satisfying. Sail Area vs. Performance

So, I did some calculations to find the difference in sail area between what this site says: http://www.sailritesails.com/ShowAd.aspx?id=5832&sourceid=0 ...and what my new tanbark sails are... Main: Leech 20', Luff 17'2", Foot 7'6". Jib: Leech 14'5", Luff 13', Foot 8'6". I think my new sails come out about 30 square feet smaller than original. How will this affect sail performance? I know I won't have as much power, but how much more wind would I need to reach hull speed? (I tried posting another post with pictures but it is on hold waiting for mod approval).

MontyPals: Well, Bob's #208 didn't last long on the market. I went down there today, met Bob and his lovely wife, and bought his boat. He clearly loves the boat, and took terrific care of her. He through in a ton of extras he had. Just a super situation for me. so, tomorrow will be a "driveway" sail to get my systems down, and then, as soon as I have the time, my maiden voyage. I'm sure I will be back on this board with questions, though the way Bob has the boat rigged, it should be smooth sailing. Daniel

Pacific Trailer

MontyPals: Gonna repack the bearings on my new trailer. I do it every year. Now, as you know, I just picked up this 2003 Pacific trailer with the boat. It is the same trailer as currently used with the new M15's. So, before I pull the hubs, does anybody know which seals are used for this trailer? I know once I pull the hub I can just read it off the seal for future purposes, but I'd rather have the seals ready the first time! Daniel

Bruce, Tod Mills had a bowsprit on his M17, but didn't care for it and removed it. I built a masthead crane for CornDog to clear the genoa furler and fly a drifter from the bow pulpit.
