M-17 Outboard Issues

Jerry Montgomery says that the outboard belongs in the boat while sailing, but that's simply not practical. My old M-17 with cutout transom is said to be too weak to trailer the boat with the outboard mounted. Is this true? Has anyone actually had damage or a failure? I use a 4 HP 4-cycle Suzuki, weighing 57 lb. Seems like if the transom is strong enough to take the weight and thrust while vibrating and slamming into waves, it ought to be ok going down the highway on a trailer... My cutout transom is pretty close to the rudder, and I have had the outboard prop hit my new $600+ IdaFoil. Luckily there was no damage. Looks to me like a Davis Doel-Fin mounted on the cavitation plate would prevent the problem. Has anyone tried to install a hydrofoil on such a small motor? If so which one? On my '76 model M17 only the upper half of the transom was backed by a 3/4" piece of plywood that was glassed in. I had a local fiberglass man extend the plywood backing the rest of the way down and glass it all in. This was not just for the motor, but also to support the swim ladder I added on the starboard side. Definately a miserable project. How he did it I can't say, but he didn't tear the transom apart.

Bearing Buddies, I'm a believer now!

So, I decided today would be the day to repack the wheel bearings of my newly acquired 2003 Pacific Trailer under my M15. The previous owner had bought the trailer new, and had never repacked the bearings. He had bearing buddies, and would give a squirt of grease when he went out to make sure the plastic indicator went forward. I inspected before taking things apart, and the inboard seals were not leaking on either side, and the wheels were clean in there. When a seal fails it all gets covered in grease. In any event, they hadn't been serviced since the trailer was new in '03, so since I am the new owner I figured now was the time. So, jacked the trailer up, and opened things up. Well, I am really amazed. Everything looked pristine. The grease was totally clean without any evidence of leakage at all. The bearings and races were perfect. I cleaned everything up, repacked the bearings, did the usual things to adjust etc., and put it all back together. I have heard mixed reviews about the theories of whether pressurizing the hubs with bearing buddies really works. But after seeing this, I am a believer now. This boat has been sailed in salt water many times, and the hubs are perfect. I hope I can keep them that way! Daniel Rich M15 #208 (still dry...)

Gilbert, Check the MSPG site _http://www.msogphotosite.com/lbgftransom.html_ (http://www.msogphotosite.com/lbgftransom.html) for a section on transom repair - I did this before I thought it was a 'photo documentation' so the pictures are incomplete - but enough there to give you the idea. The motor the PO had on the boat was an 8hp Evinrude 25" Yachtwin - approx 70# ,and the boat was towed over hill and dale with the motor attached in the TILTED position! Another reason for towing with the engine off the transom - the motor will not be bounced off the boat, be stolen from back of the boat, or tear up the transom if it gets loose on clamps etc. I cruise with the motor on the transom on a fixed mount and race with it located where the porta-potti hatch is on v-berth. Thanks for the tips on the varnish. I plan to remove the teak before I start working on it. Yes, I have a heat gun already but would not have tried without your recommendation. (Doh! Why didn't I think of that? Must be age.) Kevin M15 #200 Wee Fun

Thanks Bill and Mark, I was reading Dave Scobie's response above about (outboards) and placing weight forward. Made me wonder about battery placement. It's the weathers fault, too cold outside to get my epoxy to go off, so the floor repairs will have to wait till next week. Earl Landers
