storm jib size

I am thinking about ordering a storm jib our m17 and was wondering what size would work best? I see from the list that several are using a 65% storm jib with high clew. Is this about standard on a 17? Autopilot

John, Am I missing something here? I thought an autopilot would hold a magnetic course regardless of boat trim. I just installed a Raymarine tiller pilot for that reason. I haven't tried it out yet, but I'll be mighty disappointed if it doesn't steer the boat when I go forward. BTW, for the tiller tamer discussion, I have used the Forespar tiller extension and lockbox which works well for quickly setting the tiller in any position. Of course, it still doesn't steer well if boat trim is changed. One other alternative to the "Tiller Tamer" is the remote steering system which a few cruisers have developed base on Doug Kelch's original prototype. It's basically a line from the tiller that goes through a block to port, then to a block at the bow, back to a block on starboard and back to the tiller. This simple system not only allows one to steer from any place on the boat, but with the proper tension will hold the tiller in any position. David, To keep the sail in the track you need a sail track stop, which is a slug with a knurled nut to tighten it into the sail track. West Marine sells them for a few bucks. There were several posts on this topic just a couple of weeks ago. You put the stop in after the sail slugs are fed into the track, and it keeps them in the track until you release them. Minding the helm

There is another method for minding the tiller that I have used on several boats over the past 50 years. It requires a cleat on the rail, a piece of bungie cord and a twist lock hiking stick/tiller extension. You simply adjust the hiking stick, twist lock it into place and bungie the big ball end to the cleat. The same loop of bungie cord can be used to secure the end of the hiking stick underthe tiller when not in use. I have sailed for miles with this arrangement, steering only by trimming the sails. The hiking stick is also handy to steer while forward for a minute. "Griselda", the M17 I just acquired from my brother has this arrangent. (Wonder where he got the idea). Tiller Taimer

Thanks to the thread on Tiller Trimmers I am purchasing a Tiller Taimer from West Marine. It is $29 but does not include the black plastic horn cleats. I will install with cam cleats and fair leads at extra cost probably from Duckworks. Thanks to a past thread on reefing systems, I have ordered parts from Duckworks. I have been landlocked this spring sailing season while my wife goes through knee replacement surgery. I am hoping to get wet in a couple of weeks. While I have been sailing my old M-17 for several years now, I am always grateful for the ideas and dialogue from you all. Outboard Choice

Michael- I went with the Nissan/Tohatsu 6hp longshaft 4 stroke. I have to have 4 stroke as my local lake requires it. I chose this because I wanted F-N-R, quiet as possible, reliable, external tank, and lightest. I wanted a 4 hp but is weighs 59 lbs and the 6hp weighs 57. 4 weighs more due to internal tank. The Honda 2 appeals to me with the light weight, but I sail in ocean and the 2 would be seriously challenged in many circumstances in So. Cal. I owned a Honda 2 and they are noisy! Also no reverse/neutral or external option. BTW - The Mercury, Nissan, and Tohatsu are all made by Tohatsu, just different decals. I prefer to sail and not use motor very often, However, with little ones aboard, the 6hp is an additional safety feature IMO. It affords me the ability to get in against the wind, current, swells/waves (under most conditions found in So.Cal). If I were racing I would have the lightest as possible. I hate the added weight of the 6, but it should serve me well. Good Luck!
