I would not be without my tiller tamer. Made my own, two lengths of shock cord (bungee), each doubled around cleats at stern, fastened to length of line between them, line passes thru small cleat on underside of tiller, forward horn is tapered to "jam" line passing thru. Some experimenting to get proper length and strength of bungee, proper diameter and length of line between them. If desired, will take photos next visit to Rejoyce!, ask off line. John R. I recently bought and installed a Tiller Trimmer (http://www.tillertrimmer.com) which works great. Paid $59 for mine, but I see they've dropped the price to $49, free shipping. They delivered quickly, and I think it's a great device. Once you've got it trimmed right, you can leave the helm for several minutes. had a great trip to Gray's Harbor

We just got back last night from a weekend trip to Gray's harbor (on the Washington coast). Both days (saturday and sunday) were great sailing days, with the wind an almost constant NW @ ~15 knots and morning clouds burning off by around noon. On saturday we put our M17 in at Westport marina and sailed out over the bar into the Pacific ocean proper. We had double checked the conditions since sailing out into the ocean from here can be quite dangerous at times (the coast guard will even close the bar at times and issue fines to boats attempting to cross the bar under bad conditions). But we only had swells of about 5 to 7 feet, with the 15 knot wind. It was quite fun and we made very swift progress with the constant dependable wind. A big change from the light and variable winds that always seem to plague the sound. On Sunday we sailed over to Hoquiam from Westport, really cruising at an average of 5.5 knots the whole way! Gray's harbor is an excellent place to practice your navigation skills. We had just completed the US Sailing coastal nav course at Windworks sailing and it was nice to be able to recognize all of the navigation aids, correctly read the charts, and not get stuck in the mud! :-) Rick M17 635 Eidolon

My sailboats always have powerful outboards. The sailboat that introduced me to this nutty hobby had an ancient Seagull. When it started, it was not enough. (it was a great lesson in patience) I think that it was this boat that directed me to always having a serious motor on my own boats. Being swept through tidal races on windless days trying not to hit anything or anybody via the use of a paddle and profanity may have had an effect on my malleable psyche. My 17 has a 4 stroke 6 hp Yamaha. Super reliable, lots of headroom. I can do hull speed into a 15 knot long fetch chop. As someone mentioned earlier, when it is time to go......go. Some days when the wind is favourable, I head down hill all day. Just because. If I get lucky, the wind shifts and blows me home as well. But when it doesn't, I want to be able to motor home at hull speed no matter what. I don't know about you guys, but I have also had to tow a lot of times. It is always people in big motor boats that have run out of fuel or had engine troubles. Last year I towed in a boat that must have been 30 feet long and 2 stories high. It was not fast, but it happened. I have already towed a large motor boat back to his dock this year. A brand new racey looking thing. $150,000 worth of dead weight. I like being able to help folks if I can. I never worry about weight. I love the feel of my 17 with a full belly. I don't think it has anything to do with age - my 17 is three years old, and does the same thing. I stuff a small piece of light line into the hole around the lanyard. Works fine. I have been sailing mynew to me 1977 Seranita M17 for the past three days here in San Diego. I have noticed a weird quirk...the penetration hole for the line that lowers the centerboard "burps" during sailing and shoots water intermintantly into the cabin sole. M17 # 14 "Griselda"

This week, I drove up to the Ft. Worth area to pick up a boat my Brother parked over 15 years ago. After a bout with skin cancer, he gave up activities that would expose him to direct sun. It is one of the origonal 20 fin keel boats built in 1974 (Hull #14) and should work very well at my waterfront home on Lake Livingston. I found 'Traipsin' Griselda' in rather sad looking condition. One side was covered below the plastic tarp with green alge and the other with black algie. The tires were sunk below the rims in the dirt with grass growing up to the hubs. The deck, cockpit and cabin top were covered with a heavy coat of dirt and there were birds nests in the side decks. The good news is that the interior is in good (but dirty) condition, the cushions, sails and sail covers had been stored indoors and the bottom has been stripped and ready is for new botton finish. It has an almost new full batten main with three rows of reef points, #1, #2 & #3 jibs, a 150 Genoa, the origonal main and a bright pink spinnaker (all in good condition). The boom is rigged with vang and lazy jacks and all lines are led aft with stoppers. It is equipped with a good bulkhead compas, depth sounder and a low hours (but non running) 4 hp longshaft Evinrude. Over the next few weeks, I plan to clean up the cast iron keel and re-bed it with new keel bolts and put barrier coat and bottom paint on. Depending on how it looks with the algie removed, I may wind up painting the topsides. I am documenting my work with high quality photos and will publish a story of the restoration on the MSOG site. It will be nice to have Griselda back to her former self. I have been sailing for over 50 years in everything from my old home built Glen-L sailing pram to 75 foot ocean racing yachts. A recent capsize in very cold water in my BW harpoon and being unable to right the boat by myself has made it obvious that I just don't have the agility or strength to singlehand a big centerboard dinghy. I think Griselda, equipped the way she is is the ideal boat for a man of my age to singlehand and still fast enough to go racing with the grandkids as crew. I am not about to retire to a rocking chair and spend my time fishing from a pontoon boat. Once a Sailor, always a sailor. Outboard power
