After five weeks of clean up of our new to us 1977 M17 (formerly Chica Buena), I launched Seranita yesterday in lights winds here in San Diego's Mission Bay. What a fun sailboat. Our kids took a few photos which I will share here and which includes a "before" shot of Chica Buena. I took a bunch of photos of my restore process which include the relocation and install of a new Garhauer traveler which will be shared with the group in the "tech" department. Hoist Launching an M-15

Hi Everyone, We have an M-15 and want to move it to a place that has a hoist launch with a hook, but no sling. Does anyone have experience in hoist launching a Montgomery that they would be willing to share? Thanks! Mark

Thanks for coming into the conversation Jerry. Another great thing about this list is actually having you be apart of the conversation. (and that goes for Bob as well) My 17 does not have a cutout. It has an adjustable stainless mount (added probably) I mistakenly thought that you may have sold 17 packages with the Honda 75. Many older vintage 17's that I looked during my search last year had larger motors with them with 7.5's, 7's and 6's on most of them. It's good to hear that was not the case as I have been looking to downsize for convenience (make that weight) sake. Guess just a case of most thinking that bigger is better back in the day. If they made a 3 with and external tank, I would buy it, unfortunately, you have to move to a 4hp for that convenience, so that's where I'm headed. I'm pulling off all of the wood and some hardware for re-bedding currently... Then will be pulling the CB since the boat is new to me. But can't wait to get her in the water again as I've only sailed her a half dozen times. Soon...soon. Michael Ray Wisely M-17 #383 SF Bay

Hello all, I have been trying to come to terms with the power issue on my M-17 as well. I have the original 7.5 Honda 4 stroke that came with the boat (I imagine) way back in "19 hundred and Eighty Four" (add old codger voice here). I have read thru quite a few mailings on this issue and it seems like the 17 more often than not came with 6hp + and quite a few had the 7.5 honda. I bet Jerry had a good reason for the pairing. With that in mind (although I have seen a few with the 2 or 2.5hp as the power plant) my opinion is, anything less than a 3.5 is too lite for other than light to medium conditions. I'm looking to replace the honda 75 with something in the 4hp range for several reasons. Ext fuel tank: Most 4hp 4cyc's have external fuel capability (nothing under 4hp does. I don't want to have to try and fill up that little tank at the dock or under way. F-N-R: many smaller motors don't have reverse. Noise & Vibration: If you have to use the iron sail for extended periods of time, you want it to be a quieter rather than noisier experience. A motor that has to work a 3/4 power is much noisier than one that can do the same at 1/2 power. (every outboard rep I have talked to has said that the honda 2 is the noisiest 4cycle out there when you have to do more that a 1/4 throttle.) Over all ability: I am on the SF Bay. I was out with my wife and my 5 year old on one of our maiden voyages last year when the wind just died. We were miles from Marina Bay harbor in Richmond and it was getting quite late and we needed to be back. I knew from the tide chart that we were coming up against a 3.8 flood. It felt good to know that I had the power to get back. That said, we still got tired of the noise during the 1:30 trip back in. In Summation: I want the quietest, most reliable, F-N-R, lightest, 4hp (or maybe five) On the market. Yamaha, Merc, Honda, ???? Which is it? I don't know, but, that's my criteria. Hope it was helpful. As far as the electric outboard's go...For me, the technology/price point is not there yet. And I'll take any advice on the quietest 4hp...any opinion's? Since the 17 is 3/4 ton, the formula would call for 3-hp. You can either round up to 4 or down to 2. The big factor arguing for the 2 is the light weight. I'm also not young, but can schlep the Honda 2 around with one hand (although I admit I usually use two). Rick M-17 Lynne L ************** Vote for your city's best dining and nightlife. Rejoyce! is my third venture into "inboard ELECTRIC power." First with my first M15 "Joy." (Hence the name "Rejoyce!" for my current M15. She may be for sale if Father Time doesn't give me a fair shake, and soon.) Joy had a MinnKota 28 pound thrust troller motor installed thru the hull just aft of the keel. Loved it. Further down the line I had an old wooden Cape Cod Cat Boat whose ten h.p inboard gas engine died of old age with no repair parts available. Replaced it with a two h.p. golf cart motor (roughly equivalent to six gas h.p.) with seven six- volt golf cart batteries in series. Works beautifully, goes hull speed at full power. Sold it as I grew too old and frail, still "give instructions" to the new owner, under sail, of course! Read all about that in her site, see my address below. Rejoyce! has a MotorGuide 54 pound thrust (about 3/4 h.p. gas engine power) also installed just aft of the keel. It will push her to about 2.8 mph (by GPS), have been too ill to evaluate her endurance with her two group 27 deep cycle batteries, but have yet no more than tapped her capability. With a friend one day, (a white knuckle non- sailor), as the breeze kept increasing--20, 25, then over thirty knots, fully reefed, or jib only, the fun too much for him. (Rejoyce! and I were having a ball!) Sails down and furled, we ran back to the marina, directly into the wind and waves 1 to 2 feet high, made only about one mph, but I was in no hurry, still enjoying just being on the water. I strongly believe ANY kind of auxiliary power on a pleasure boat should be in accord with one of my Webster's definitions: " . . . having an engine to supplement the sails." NOT replace them! Prudent seamanship includes knowing the limitations of both yourself AND your boat; working with tides, not against them; knowing the rudiments of weather observation and forecasting; knowing when and how to reef (essential on the heavily powered Cape Cod Catboats--I had 271 sq. ft. in just one sail on an 18' LOA); on and on. To me, a non-racer, those "fine points" are the real challenges, the real fun. I still do some freelance writing, now working on one about all of the above. Don't hold your breath--I'm still fading. Wow, Does this mean I can go to a 4hp for the M23? John Vigor has this formula which calls for 4hp for each ton of boat displacement. Seems close to me. Bones I bought the 2 hp Honda long-shaft for my M-17, and have been very happy with it with almost a year's experience. It weighs only 27 lb, is super-reliable, always starts, and for getting in and out of dock can't be beat. That said, I sail in protected water (Potomac River near DC), and have no experience with it in a heavy sea, but the previous owner kept the boat on Chesapeake Bay for a couple of seasons with an identical engine and recommended it highly. ____________________________________________________________ Fabulous Spa Getaway! Our M17 has a 2.5HP 4 stroke yamaha, which is very lightweight. It pushes the boat around at about 4.5 knots with 2 large adults in it. I think we could probably get 5 knots or a bit more with a larger motor, but the whole point of the boat is sailing anyway, so I haven't bothered. It is nice to have an engine that is light enough that you don't have to worry about leaving it on the transom mount for short on the road trips...saves an extra couple of minutes set-up time.
