Rick, My boom also dates from 2005, and all the screws have holes with tapped threads. I have added a couple of turning blocks and cleats for reefing using a tapping drill and #10-32 stainless machine screws. Works fine. Rick ************** Gas prices getting you down? question about boom attachment

I want to attach a preventer to the boom on my M17. I am curious how the mainsheet bracket is attached to the boom, and where a similar bracket could be obtained for the preventer attachment. The mainsheet bracket looks to be fastened to the boom with 4 screws...are these backed on the inside with nuts, or is the boom tapped, or ? I was thinking of taking one of the endcaps off and shining a light in there to see, but figured I might get a better/faster answer here. The boom was built in 2005 or so if that helps. I really think it must use sheet metal type screws or the wall thickness of the boom is thick enough to allow tapping. I can't see how one could get a tool inside the boom that far from the end... Reconfiguring the Main Sheet...

I find myself having to always reach past someone's feet to get to the main sheet on my M-15 and I am thinking about making a change to that configuration. I thought I would run it by some experienced M-15 owners and see if you think this idea will fly. My plan is to change out the main swivel cam for a double sheave box that will allow the main sheet to pass through the teak mounting platform that currently holds that hardware. The double rollers on this sheave box will allow for the necessary travel of the main sheet to port and starboard. After passing the main sheet through the wood, I would direct it through a stationary block that is mounted at the starboard bottom side of the mounting board. This will allow me to direct the main sheet aft while keeping it out of the cockpit area. I would mount a new shorter swivel block just forward of the inspection port on the starboard wall of the cockpit which ends up around 14" forward of the transom and 6" of the deck of the cockpit. I have thought this through, but would appreciate any comments or advice before I start drilling holes. Outboard power

Thanks Jim P. by the way for the info on the Mercury 4hp. The guys at the outboard motor shop were one of the sources that told me the Honda 2 was a little loud. Do you sail out of Oakland/Alameda? M15 boarding ladder

Hi Bob Becker, In one of the old Montgomery Newsletters there was an article on how to install a transom ladder on the M15. It was a process where you inserted a plywood backing plate through the starboard cockpit locker. If I remember correctly, you drilled two holes through the backing plate and inserted strings with a knot at one end. The strings were fed through drilled holes on the transom. You pulled the strings from the the rear of the transom and when the backing plate was against the transom you were able to secure it. My son, who was about 12 at the time, assisted by crawling through the locker from the cabin. It worked like magic. You will have to go through the old newsletters which you can find on one of the Internet sites. Have you replaced you centerboard pennant? I still have to replace mine. Sometime we'll have to sail together. My favorite SF Bay sail is a 13 mile run from Coyote Point to Redwood City. Rich Cottrell "Really" M15
