Rick and I are both Flathead Lake natives, grew up there, and took our first sailing lessons there out of Dayton, near Wild Horse Island. Flathead Lake is big, beautiful and can have some very nice wind. Usually good breeze in the morning and late afternoon. There are just a few destinations though, few parks and few marinas as most is privately owned, but they are available. Dayton has a nice sailing club and is usually available to stay at. Polson at the south end of the lake has now at least 2 marinas with available slips. The swimming is fine Mid July through early September, a little chilly in June. The storms do happen, but usually with fair warning. The first time we took a boat out alone, the instructor said "It looks a little marginal today" and we managed to broach the thing, yet lived to laugh about it. I'm always amazed at how little boat traffic is on this lake. Absolutely gorgeous when the weather is nice. If you need names of businesses, just let us know. We have to haul the boat there from Spokane at least once a year to go sailing or the summer just wouldn't be the same... I sailed my M17 on Flathead lake in 1988 for 5 days. It is a very scenic lake about 20 miles long (if failing memory serves) set in a basin surrounded by tall and beautiful mountains. There are some fairly shallows area but there is just enough water to sail. The main part of the lake is very deep. There is a Marina at the northern edge where we put in and sailed the length of the lake south to the group of islands including No Horse island. Back then only one of the islands had any development on them, and when we anchored in a small cove a couple of BIG buck mule deer walked along the edge of the shore within 30 yards of us. The water is COLD so don't expect to swim in it, and be careful, because the lake is set in a valley, storms can comin elevation that the sailing season is short. I think we were there in August and were very glad to have sleeping bags at night. Flathead lake, Montana sailing

Hi, We have a friend getting married near Flathead lake in Montana and are thinking about trailoring our M17 from Seattle to make a mini vacation of the trip. Have any of you sailed Flathead lake? I would be interested to hear about your experience.

Furler jib

Hi all, I'm thinking about getting a 135% genoa for a CDI furler on an M-17, and having no experience with furlers would like some advice. Particularly, various people recommend a luff pad, either foam or rope, to improve sail shape when partially reefed. Others don't like the pad since it increases the windage at the forestay and disturbs the airflow over the sail. Some just don't think it's necessary. Does anyone have experience with a luff pad, and if so, was it good, bad, or so-so? How about in ~20 kts when it's really reefed down? Jay, I'm going through the same thing, and just looked at the website Dave recommended, and am now kind of confused. The stock measurements given in the second table show a headstay length of 23' 3 1/2". My headstay, hull no. 633, measures 23" 0", which is a big discrepancy. I just got a new headstay from Furling and Rigging which gives a measurement of 23' 0 1/2", which is close to my actual measurement (certainly within the margin of my measurement error). I also found another website http://www.clrmarine.com/250.html which gives for the Montgomery 17 I=22.0, J=6.6, P=19.0, which doesn't agree with the first table for the standard rig. I'm not sure how to explain the discrepancies, hence my confusion. Tohatsu now makes a 3.5 horse 4 stroke long shaft that only weighs 41 lbs. Might be a pretty good motor for those wanting something light for their M17's. It looks like it shares the same "chassis" as the 2 hp. If you want to move up to a 4 hp, which shares the same chassis as the 5 and 6 hp motors, you jump to 57 lbs, but gain the external fuel tank option. The Suzuki and Yamaha 3.5 outboards look interesting for light use also, but as of yet do not seem to be available in long shaft models. Larry

M-17 Measurements

I am looking for the various rigging measurements (J, I, ISP, JSP, P, E, PY, EY) for the purpose of ordering a sail. I have seen them somewhere - does anyone know where I can find them? Thanks. Jay
