Kendall replying to Gary and Doug, Thanks for your input. About the foam. I certainly don't wish to lower the value of the Monty. I wasn't looking to expand the area, only replace the area Jerry had already placed Styrofoam. If I filled the cavity in the bow (filled in the space where there are gaps between the chunks of Styrofoam) I think I would gain enough room to use the area normally screwed closed, forward of the potty area, as storage for my anchor and rode. So my new question is...If I pass on the spray foam idea, can I remove 1.4 cubic feet of Styrofoam from the forward compartment and be okay? Can I relocate it to another location, maybe hot glue it to the bottom of my cabin floor above the bilge? That way it would still be there...centered, out of the way, just aft of normal. Hi Gang, Styrofoam crumbles and leaves you with itty-bitty white pieces that fly all over the place. How about using screw top plastic gallon containers, or whatever fits to supply floation. They are removable. They are light weight They supply positive floatation .... and, you still have a place to put an anchor / chain / rode. When I operated a marina, I (we) would float mooring anchors (concrete blocks reinforced with steel- approx weight was calculated at 1200+#) to the mooring field on large slabs of Styrofoam approx 18"-24" by 5' by 5'. The block was set on the foam off -center, and when we got to the desired location in the water we would capsize the foam and 'launch' the concrete. Always BIG fun for us boys at the boatyard! A couple hundred feet (usually 150' to 200') of 5/16 proof coil and swivels attached with a 24" Jim-Buoy mooring ball - lotsa RUCKUS. Yes one or two were 'launched ' prematurely - and subsequently recovered to be relocated. Big fun - Thank You for allowing an older guy to reminisce. GO **************Ideas to please picky eaters. East Coast Cruise planning

Well by now everyone must have cabin fever like myself so It is time to start planning some cruises for this season. I maintain a private list for East Coast Cruising so if you would like to join us send me a note off line and I will add you to the list. We generally do a 3 day to 1 week cruise on the Chesapeake Bay and another 1 - 2 week cruise north or south of the Chesapeake. For a good example of the two week cruises you can read John Edwards article in the latest SCA on our Cruise in the North Channel last year. John, Thanks for a great article. This year my time early in the year is limited so the Chesapeake cruise will not be a one week affair but will likely be a 4 day, Friday through Monday cruise. I am having some thoughts about a cruise in the Florida Everglades between Thanksgiving and Christmas but it is to far away to commit to. Here is what I'm thinking. Some of you know that I rescued M-15 from 24 years of neglect in the woods. The interior plywood was shot. Under the center plywood, or what was left of it, I found many various sized pieces of Styrofoam. And more under the cockpit too. I got to thinking. Could I use expanding foam in place of the Syrofoam, and gain another storage compartment? 1600# of water divided by 8# per gallon = 200 gallons of water (x) 231 cubic inches per gallon = 46,200 cubic inches. 46,200 cubic inches divided by 1728 cubic inches in a square foot, means I would need 26.73 Cubic feet of faom to offset 1600#. Are my numbers right? Would the expanding foam damage anything inside? I know it is extremely messy, I'd control that. I'm asking if anyone else has done this and if so, was it good results? After looking at it, that I could open up some space in the cabin and in the back. Another question. I notice on the Montgomery website, that owners have used several different options for dealing with the transom mount. If I decide to change out the fixed glassed mount for a retractable one, are the nuts embedded under the transom so I could just take out the bolts, install my new bracket and tighten it back up? Or does someone VERY skinny have to get under the cabin and remove and reattach the nuts? Kendall Docter Bossier City, LA M-15 #164

Kendall, I presume you goal is "positive foam floatation". The floatation foam should be installed primarily above the DWL and as far outboard as possible or the tendency is for the boat to 'turn turtle'. This is one of the major reasons why so few boats carry positive floatation - it is a tough design parameter to achieve and even tougher to sucessfully execute in practice. If you install that much foam in a M-15 the boat will promptly turn upside down and need to be pumped dry before it could be righted when the boat took on large amounts of water. The better solution is to practice prudent seamanship and excellent maintenance such that water entering the boat in large volume is minimized and when or if it does, it may be effectively removed in an orderly manner. Good luck if you foam your boat - it is a messy job at best. If polled, I think the list would say it would deter from the boats resale value. Check out 26.73 cubic feet to see how much room your boat will be left with for interior space. MO FWIW your actual mileage may vary. Dear MSOG folks. I sent this note to Doug and he recommended I forward it on the list. Thanks for any help.:-) ---------------------------------------- I am located in Central Texas, near Austin and am in the process of selling my 30' ketch and downsizing. I've looked at all the small boats and decided on a Montgomery, but I am unsure between 15 and 17 (leaning towards 17). I've read through your entire site, including the discussion on choosingand I must say I am leaning towards 17 because of my desire to do lots of overnighters in it and sail along the Texas coast (in the bays, not the Gulf) but the 15 is really a very portable boat. Can you put me in touch with one or two owners in the Central Texas, or at least somewhere in Texas, with 15s and 17s that I could contact and perhaps visit?
