Hello Everyone I been sailing for 30+ yr.'s and have owner 4 sailboats before a found out about the Montgomery boats, thanks to Rick Langer and his friends that I meet at Freeport, Va at the end of their 2006 cruise. So I started searching for a used M15. (very hard to find on the East coast). In March I found hull #264 listed about 90 miles from here and bought her. But she needs work and weather here has not been good. Hope a get it in the water next month and give her a try. I have lots of questions as I go thru this boat. But right now I need to know how the rig works (I just order new rigging from Jerry), the old shrouds were cut and turnbuckles added at the chainplates, so I 'm not sure how the new wire should be attached at the chainplates? Also from the MSOG web site I found that Giles Morris owned this boat at one time . Does anyone know how to contact him? Thanks for any help pics and/or info. Hope to see you on the water. Another two cents worth: In the Fall of 1984 I bought a new 1983 M15 from a dealer in Minneapolis. Back in those days I was poor and in good health. Now I am no longer poor, but hardly rich, and in lousy health at 78. My first M15 was my nautical love and joy, and was named "Joy." We explored many lakes and rivers together and had innumerable nights at anchor on most of them. But a form of stroke in '77 wiped out my left inner ear, leaving me permanently balance- impaired. As years passed, my balance deteriorated, and the relative tenderness of Joy's round bottom became more than I could stand. Or, perhaps more honestly, an inheritance meant I could use my balance for an excuse to move up to the full keel Cape Dory Typhoon, Joy II. She and I re-explored my many favorite coves on Beaver Lake in NW Arkansas, but she was not trailerable for me, so we stuck to home waters. I didn't know it then, but peripheral poly neuropathy was robbing my legs of feeling, and balance became more of a problem. (Ever try to stand on one leg when it had "gone to sleep"?) So I "graduated" to a Cape Cod Catboat, 8' 6" of hard-chine beam on an 18' 6" LOA hull--VERY stable, and only one sail to handle, no foredeck work. (Read about her by clicking on my signature below.) But time continued to take its toll, and when I found I could no longer handle her, I broke my heart and sold her and also sold my condo on Beaver Lake. But I missed sailing too much, so went back to the lovely M15, and went up 97 hull numbers from 264 to 361. So yes, there is life after bigger boats, and the Jerry's ever-perfect M15 provides quite a perfect life. No, my e-mail address is not salacious, it just refers to my last sailboat, "The Old Cat." Thanks, folks for all your advice and suggestions about getting my wife to enjoy sailing. Part of the "backstory" was when she was 16, she went out on the lake with some hotshot Hobie sailor (no, it wasn't me) who insisted on flying the hull despite her protests. Naturally, he dumped the boat and threw her into the rigging, which cut her leg up. She still has a small scar on her leg, but the mental one left in her head was a good bit bigger. No yelling is good... I've already got that one covered pretty well. But the "no duties" idea is a new thought that makes a lot of sense. Of course, she'll protest, but explaining that it's an option for her to completely relax & let me do all the grunt work is valid. I made sure that all the boats have electric windlasses, and have already found an "intro to scuba" 1-hr class for my son to attend. She's refused the idea of hiring a captain, even for a half day, and doesn't want to go larger than a 32... which, as I'll be mostly singlehanding, has about all the sail area I can handle by myself. I'd thought about a catamaran, but having never sailed one, am pretty apprehensive about that. I'd also like to stay with a monohull, if only to keep things similar to what we might eventually buy. (See, Honey, we could get one just like this!) Many years ago we went aboard an Island Packet 32, one of the first new ones they built. She liked that boat a lot, but at that time, the 159K price tag might as well been 159M... (still is, really) But those Bene's seem like they'd be pretty impressive as well, much like the IP was. The only advice I'm going to NOT take is "forget her and go with someone else." I'm not saying that's necessarily bad advice, or incorrect, just that it won't work for me right now! I'll keep folks posted about how things go... might even make a good magazine article. Thanks again BG

I'm with you on that one Bones! Spreaders in the water = bad!!! hahaha I've had a few episodes like that when flying a chute on our former boats and loosing control followed by the infanous "death roll". Forget that stuff!!! We are rigging Dauntless up to carry a chute but these days we are pretty timid with it since there is only two of us on board to fly it. Hi Hugh, I too, was a big boat sailor once upon a time, till I finally realized that with over crowded anchorages, and no peace and quiet any more it was time to change methods of operation. I had a 29 foot Tripp designed sloop for 26 years. Tried her big brother, a Northeast 38 but found it too big. Then went trailerable. First started with a Bolger MICRO - great boat for several years, but, .... stepping the mast became too much of a chore. The size was right; trailering was right - mast stepping wasn't. Next try: A ComPac 16 with an aluminum mast and shrouds. The size was right but sailing characteristics left a lot to be desired, as did lack of proper storage and living space. That's when I found the Montgomery 15. After lots of very helpful chitchat with the people on the M web site, who answered my questions, and pointed me in the right directions, I finally found an M15 in Panama City, Florida, and bought it sight-unseen over the phone from the owner who lived in Sausalito, CA. An M15 is an ideal vessel for two people. Jerry did a super job of design and construction; lots of excellent storage space, and an interior layout that works very well. We've owned for several years, exploring all sorts of delightful sailing areas, and my only reason for selling it was, Neptune tapped me on the shoulder one day as I was rigging the boat, and asked, "at 84 years of age, how long do you expect to continue sailing?" Hi Rick, Westport is a good spot. I have never launched there so can't give you any information. >From Westport you can sail across Lake Champlain to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum - a delightful place to visit. We used to base at Essex Marina, in Essex, NY - the next town north of Westport. The marina has a dirt launch ramp after going down a very steep roadway to the marina. It is tiny, but after using it several times, and getting used to the hill climb as you go back up to Main Street, I found the heart palpitations greatly reduced. The other place we used often with the MICRO, the ComPac 16 and the M15 was the New York State ramp in Wilsboro. A very broad concrete ramp with excellent parking spaces. This would be a good starting spot if you want to sail over to Burlington, VT, but first you have to sail out of Wilsboro Bay which is about 1.5 miles long, before reaching Lake Champlain itself. This is sheltered water and a nice place to sail, if you just want to putter around. Happy sailing Connie PS. I now have a DSL service so also a new e-mail address. Lake Champlain Cruise

So far Frank Durant and I are planning a week cruise on Lake Champlain in late August (to be home by Labor Day). Based on Connie's advice, Westport, NY seems like a reasonable starting point, but that can change as we receive farther input. Lifting by toe rails
