Hi Skip, You need a topping lift for the main. Then when you lower the main, the topping lift holds the boom horizontal, and it doesn't drop on your head. Check the M-web site for topping lift installations and instructions. Mine went from the end of the boom to a tiny swivel block at the top of the mast, and the topping lift line then was tied off to a cleat at about boom gooseneck height. This allows you to raise the boom - after dropping the sail - so that you have head clearance in the cockpit. The thing to remember is that you have to loosen the topping lift after you raise the main, so that the main can assume it's proper shape for sailing. i.e., the topping lift has to be loose when the main is raised. When you lower the main, then you can tighten up the topping lift to hold the boom at your desired height. Connie

Another two cents worth: Rejoyce, #361, came with a permanently installed topping lift--line from fitting at end of boom to block at top of mast, port side, down to a jam cleat at the base of the mast, starboard side. I made one change to that, reeved to block on the starboard side of the mast, same as the jam cleat and the traditional side for all mainsail gear. I also made an addition which I have used on other boats, especially my Cape Cod Catboat with her huge sail: two light lines fastened at appropriate places on the topping lift and down to eyes on the port side of the boom. These "Lazy Jacks" keep the canvas from falling overboard, even though the boom is held up nicely. Lazy Jacks are traditionally on both sides of the sail, but I prefer them on the port side only, lowering my main while heading slightly off on a starboard tack. You young and agile Monty Sailors don't need that, but a decrepit and handicapped Old Goat needs all the help he can get! Hi Skip: I try to rig up a topping lift when I sail. It holds up the boom when the main is lowered. The first few times I rigged, I forgot to tie it on. Then I would have to lower the boom to tie it on, and then raise the boom a second time. I'm getting better about remembering things. Or maybe it's getting worse, I can't remember. Hi Theo Yeah... you sort of did get raped... sounds like they hit you with the "minimum charge". On the other hand, I'm in the market for a milling machine, so I know how much those guys have invested in their setup, and believe me it ain't cheap. I own a very small lathe and can probably turn pins for folks if need be. Just send me an email and I'll try to help. I couldn't do it for free, but maybe for half what you paid. I know it's too late to help you now, sorry... but maybe we can save someone else a few dollars. Theo, I have a very good friend who is a fabricator, I am lucky as I am frequently the beneficiary of his generosity ie. 'drops' (leftover pieces of material.) When I purchase raw material from suppliers I am in awe - prices have gone thru the ceiling! Check the prices for raw material (copper is at a historic high) and then figure in cost of the machinists time for labor to cut to length or turn to proper diameter, cost of consumables (cutting tools etc), probably a good deal at $40. They don't generally sell Montgomery centerboard pins at Malwart. Or East marine. If East marine sold them they would be $95. Hi Donglai, My thought is that you laid the Honda on the wrong side during the winter; therefore the oily smoke when you started running the engine. On one side of the engine case there are two feet. These are the feet that should be down supporting the engine when it is lying on the ground. 1. Check the oil level to make certain that the sump still has the right oil level, and refill if necessary. 2. If the engine ran fine the remainder of the afternoon, then it probably was burning off the residual oil that you had in the system. It doesn't take much oil to create the oily smoke you saw. 3. I'd also check the condition of the spark plug. If it got oiled up, then you might have troubles trying to start the engine next time you're out. If you have any doubts about it's condition (cleanliness of porcelain on center electrode); then replace it. It might not matter, but it helps the uneasy spirit when you "know" that you have a clean plug in the cylinder; .... and always carry a spare spark plug in your tool box - just in case... Glad to hear you had a great first trip. The first voyage is always the most difficult. That's when you are learning how to do it; where do things go; and how does it work; and you are learning how to step the mast and rig the boat. Next time you make new mistakes, but you are learning, and won't repeat them on the third outing. By then you are a pro. Have a great summer, Ciao Connie

Hi, I have experienced both the problems you talked about. In regards to the centerboard pin, mine vibrated almost out from the tires on the trailer being non radials. When I discovered the pin nearly out, I consulted Bob Eeg and he recommended using 3M 5200 and tapping the pin in til it was flush and applying the 5200 to both sides. I did this and have since changed the tires to radials, have driven over 2000 miles cross country and to several isolated areas on very rough roads and have not experienced the problem again. I also make a point of checking the pin prior to each sail and again after. I have a Honda 2 HP 4 stroke engine and found first off that I placed it down in the truck bed wrong side up and lost a great deal of oil. Then, I found that I over filled it. This motor does not use very much oil. And it takes very little to reach the little fill line. I had it serviced last Spring and was informed that I had overfilled it. Since then, I have not had a problem with smoking or with starting and I have not had to add any oil. Time for a cool change!
