My M15 centerboard pin almost fell out!

Hello all, I took my M15 "Shaolin" out for first sail of the season in the Sandy Hook bay area (by NJ). We had a great time on the water and did some beach hopping. I encountered two major issues. 1) My Honda 2hp is burning oil and start to smoke badly when I ramp up the RPM. We had to shut it off to let it cool before turning it back on again. It worked fine afterwards in speed just above idle, we cruised at 2 knots or so with the motor all afternoon. Any ideas on what could be causing the oil burn? Oil also leaks out of the exhaust pipe if I ramp up the engine. 2) My centerboard pin almost fell out. After I towed the boat out of the water, I saw that the centerboard pin is stuck out way on one side. I could push it mostly back in with just hand force. I don't want is to sail along and have my centerboard fall out on me next time we go out. I'd appreciate any idea or suggestions on these two problems. Thanks! Donglai "Shaolin" M15 #612

Just how Stable??

All, I was out sailing this past weekend and the wind was a bit gusty and being unpredictable. I was sailing in the Baltimore Harbor and the wind shifts a lot due to the buildings crowding the waters edge. I was on a port tack when a gust of wind hit the boat and healed us over. I was having problems releasing the main sheet. Every time I pulled up on the jam cleat, the cleat adjustment angle would move up one notch. The harder I pulled up, the higher the angle moved. The boat was healed over so much that the starboard gun wale was 6 inches under water and the cockpit was filling up. By the time we were able to release the main sheet we had 6+ inches of water in the cockpit. I was certain we were going swimming. With the exception of our shoes getting wet, everything else stayed dry. I can not believe how stable and well balanced this boat is. I'm not sure at what angle we were sailing (nearly tipping over), but it is far greater then what I am comfortable with, and still the boat remained upright. When we got back to the dock and began stowing our gear, I found the starboard locker full of water. In the end I'm glad this happened on the starboard side, since the port locker was cut out by a previous owner. Which means the bilge would have been full. In the end, it's best to know the limits of the boat. Now I have a better idea of just how far I can heal over before I go swimming. You have an 82; the port locker in my 83 M15 came that way- port locker is open; starboard is an enclosed storage area. I suspect your 82 may have come that way also. Bobbie M15 #321 "Liftoff"

M15 Keel repair

I finally gathered enough courage to do surgery on the Pelican. Check out the pic at http://picasaweb.google.com/jascopacific/M15KeelRepair I discovered the steel punching are rusted at the top. It looks like water entered from above probably the interior of the cabin. Interesting is the vein of fiberglass that runs horizontally though the punchings. Any ideas about what this vein is for? This repair isn't very fun. I would rather be pushing to weather in a parting sea! Any opinions would be appreciated. Captain Jim Sailing vessel Pelican

Good example and precisely why locker "locks" are a good idea. The setup up I have are lines attached to the underside of the locker hatch and they run to jam cleats inside the cabin just at the companion way entrance. While out sailing I keep these in the locked and "jammed" position to prevent them from opening in the sudden event of a knock down. The added benefit with this method is that you don't need additional locks and latches on the exterior in the cockpit which look messy and can scratch your legs pretty bad. Additionally I always sail with - at minimum - the bottom hatch board installed in the companion way and increase them to incrementally to number three depending on wind and wave strength. Dave: If you have Firefox, you need to click on "Enable Java Script", found under: - "Tools" - "Options" - "Content" Then reload the page. IE will have something similar. steve Steve R. I've used bias car tires, radial car tire, bias trailer tires and radial trailer tires over the years on different trailers. Radials always swayed more than bias tires. Sometimes it didn't show as a problem until the tongue weight changed from improper boat loading or in extreme gusty winds...or when a big rig buffeted us hard. One time I replaced worn bias tires with radials on a 20' boat where the trailer capacity was near max. It didn't sway at all with bias tires but swayed so bad with the radials I took them off after the first road trip and replaced with bias again. No radials on trailers for me. Hi Bones, I like Bloody Marys too, but I often found that on our boat that tomato juice was in short supply compared to the gin supply. In case you should decide to sail in the Netherlands, once retired - to be highly recommended - then the drink you look for is a gin called Bokma. Bokma is Ould Genevre (the early form of gin), a delightful drink in a warm cabin on chilly Dutch evenings (the wind blows off the English Channel) and hot summer daytime temperatures are in the mid to upper '70s. Evening can get chilly. (Bring along a heavy sweater). The other reason for drinking Bokma is that it comes in a square, squat bottle, making it easy to stow on board, and no matter what the sea state, I have never had one tip over. Slide back and forth on the bridge deck of the companionway, certainly. But I never spilled a drop. What better recommendation do you want for a proper seagoing drink? Connie

Hi Peter, Years ago we had a long discussion on the M site on this subject. The conclusion was that going to radials was the better way to go. I used Goodyear Radials on my Trailrite trailer for our M15, and puts lots of miles on it, driving from Connecticut to Florida and back as well as shorter trips to Lake Champlain. I never had a problem either launching, or cruising down the Interstate at 70 MPH. The other M-listers probably agree with me as well. Connie ex M15 #400 LEPPO

MSOG site

When I go to the MSOG site I get a message on the top of the page "menu will appear here, or reload". I have tried everything I know and can't get the menu to appear. Anyone else have this problem, or what can I do to fix it? Thanks Dave M17 206
