Hello to all: I've made good progress on bringing my M-17 back, and will be launching before Christmas. I just got a look at the bottom 18" of the steel CB. It looks like it was never taken care of in any way. Severe rust. I plan to grind and fill with epoxy filler, but I need suggestions on what to coat the steel with. Coal Tar Epoxy? Red Lead? or whatever. All of your suggestions and advice is appreciated. Thanks, Leif Eriksson

Gentlemen (& Ladies), My name is Mark and I have been a subscriber to the message list a little while now. I enjoy reading hands on experiences and questions regarding the Montgomery boats, although I do not own one as of yet. The recent topic on blistering hulls does not deter my ownership desire. Keep up the openness discussions. Mr. Eag, if I have my way one of your boats will be sailing Lake Michigan in the Chicagoland area someday. Bob -- I have had a number of other fiberglass boats over the years that have lived for months in fresh water. I have never had a barrier coat on any of them, and I have never had a blistering problem. Are you saying that M-boats need a barrier coat as a matter of course? Do you tell new owners this? One gallon should cover and protect the bottom) I've never heard of any blistering on the boats except yours. And some people here on the West Coast have their boat in the water all year long. Small blisters can be sanded flush and when the hull is prepared properly you can roll on the Interlux barrier coat. ( 2000E). This is a bullet proof epoxy that lasts forever. After Katrina, my yacht club has several empty slips and I'm thinking of keeping Sweet Dream in the water for a while. Before I do that I need to put some bottom paint on her. Bob was nice enough to recommend the barrier coat, how about a recommendation from someone on a (subtropical salt water) bottom paint that won't rub off if I occasionally stick her back on the trailer. Bottom growth is very agressive here. You could stick a bare 2x4 in the water and come back two weeks later to find alge and barnacles adhering to it. In 3 month, worms would have bored enough holes to make it look like Swiss Cheese. Also, should I coat the c;board also? Don Ludlow M!% # 620 Sweet Dream

She had Trinidad on her, and was kept in the water (Gulf Coast). I don't know if the previous owner put a barrier coat on her before the trinidad, but she had no blisters when I got her. I kept her in fresh water for 3+ years and there were no blisters that I could see on her when I took her out. Harvey/ Ga former M-17 Stargazer #294

HI Jeff, Welcome aboard! There is lots of fine info in the Monty site. Howard, the narrow side decks on the M23 encourage one to watch their footing. I have no lifelines or stantions, thus freeing up area to step. For deck work, as with the M17, I will simply step up to the coach roof and walk forward. I don't consider the side decks to be a problem for me and my size 13's. Jeff, good luck in a hunt for an M23, all good things come to those who wait. I remember there were 2 for sale here in the midwest in the late 90's, no one seemed interested. It took me 2 years to find my M17, and my M23 never did hit the marketplace. Later, Bones

Hello to all, I have just found the montgomery site and signed up. I presently own a Halman 20' and have been interested in moving up to a larger boat with more room for wife and child. I have "fallen for" the Montgomery 23 and am interest in buying or trading up for one. It looks like I might be in for a long search as it seems they are few and far between. Anyone interested in the Halman 20' - or could steer me in the right direction for a possible purchase of a M-23 let me know. I'll be looking. Jeff Packer Marcus, WA

Toyota corolla tow ???

Any one out there tow an M!% with a corolla ??? or similar lil car ?? I'm not thinking lauch/retrieval , but simply moving the boat and not sure if the lil car is up to it.

My two cents worth on hull blisters and repair. My 1975 M-17 hull developed blisters after a full year ( 1983-84) in Folsom Lake, CA. There were literally hundreds, perhaps a thousand but they were very small. While on vacation, I checked with two boat repair yards in Marian and Mattappoisett, Mass. and they recommended, cleaning, sanding and application of Interlux Interprotect 1000 and 2000. Both were unanimous in this recommendation. Naturally, at that time, I didn't know from squat. In a New Bedford Boat US store I picked up a Interlux pamphlet entitled, " Boater's Painting Guide and colorchart". It explained the process for applying the barrier coat s ( 1000 & 2000) which I followed to the letter. Fortunately once the sanding was done ( nasty job with a lap strake hull) I found that the blistering was superficial and did not penetrate to the base. I then applied the barrier coats with small roller and brush and the two coats of Micron CSC anti fouling paint. All this in 1998 and so far no problem. The boat is moored in summer in fresh water. In 2000 I removed the cast iron centerboard and followed their instructions to the letter, sandblasting and coating with Interlux 2000 plus anti foul paint. Again, at this time, no problem. No sticky board, no problemo, works great. Not knowing anything different, I would suggest that one obtain a similar Interlux brochure ( www.Interlux.com) if still available or similar product with comprehensive instructions. I've seen blistering on many a premium boat...Pacific Seacraft, Cape Dorys as well as production boats like Catalina and Hunter. No doubt that there are Hinckleys and others out there with blisters as well. Before I bought Stargazer, I walked thru a boat storage yard where most of the boats had some degree of blisters. I had nightmares of the M-17 in Ft Myers having them, but happily, she did not. Dunno is a barrier coat was applied eons ago, but when she left here, after being in the water for 4 years there were no visible blisters on her. Harvey/ Ga
