If the hatches are closed and the hatch boards are properly secured, even a Monty will survive a 360 deg rollover. I hope none of you ever test this. Sandy

I agree with Todd's perception of self righting. I think it should be kept in mind that it is normally assumed the boat is being sailed in the waters it was designed for. If the horizontal surface happens to be 60 degrees to the horizon because it's part of a monster, blue water wave, I don't think it counts for a Montgomery! That said, in the 2+ years I've been keeping up with Montgomery lore, I've never heard of one turtling, or even coming close. They're great boats. Martin and Doug. Excellent article. I'll be doing some of the same work to my M-17, #208 "Proteus" some time in the spring. This will be a valuable resource! I'm a new member to the gruop and a new sailor, this being my first sailboat. I like the level of activity I see in the group. All have been very friendly. Thanks, Doug

inspection ports

Craig, The little brass inspection ports allow access to the space between the hull and liner, which extends into the keel. Regarding my situation, several gallons of water leaked into the keel before I saw it penetrating through a crack in the liner. Through my new ports I can check for more water accumulating(hopefully none) and vacuum out any water in the fall and add antifreeze to prevent damage from expanding ice in the keel. During daily use these ports will be closed so spray, rainwater, beer, etc. doesn't get below the floor. Martin

wood oil

My M17 does not have varnished or painted exterior teak. I have been using teak oil on the wood but am not very happy with the results. The teak oil does not seem to last long and so needs to be applied often. I came across a product called Uncle Billy's Wood Oil based on pine tar. It is sold on the American Rope and Tar web page. Does anyone have any experiance with this product? Tom M17 Obsessus

John, I've lifted my M17 by the aluminum toe rails. The newer boats don't have them, of course, but being yours is a '78 I assume it does. I attached to 4 points along each side to distribute the weight and the boat hung that way for a month while I refinished the hull. I did take all the extra weight out though, and checked all the toe rail bolts. Jerry M. says that's the way he moved them in the shop when he built them. I'll admit it was a little nerve wracking when I first hoisted it, but it works. Craig, yes - Jerry made about 7-8 Flush Deck M17's in the mid 70's. Mine was his personal one. They are way-cool, are extremely good looking and rare. I am presently checking in from San Diego, where we are spending the month of January - with the boat - sailing and having a wonderful time. Take Care, John (Tucson)
