Florida Keys Trip

Hi, Here are the latest plans for the spring trip to the Florida Keys. It is still uncertain who will be able to trailer thier boat down, but the guys listed below have expressed an interest in sailing with the group. Mid-late March: My wife and I tow Miss T to the keys and spend a week or two just sailing . Toby flys home. Early April: Doug Kelch, Bill Riker, and possibily Tod Mills trailer their boats to Key West and sail in company for a week, including a trip to the Dry Tortugas if the weather allows. Stan and Carol Winarski will be in the Keys in April and may join up with the group for awhile. Any one who would like to sail along is more than welcome to join us. Just let me know. Stan: Do you have a source for the bimini fitting? Doug: Other small boats use something that looks like a trailer plug. I am thinking of using one of the newer, round trailer plugs myself. Murray: Thanks for posting about your knock-down experience. Thanks to the others for their comments and suggestions as well. Winter is really here so at least it has been interesting to read about sailing and plan those projects. Steve R. Confirmation to continue ads on the MSOG

I will be sending out monthly (yeah, right) emails to advertisers to confirm the continuation of ads. The ad will be deleted unless I receive a confirmation to continue it. Hi Howard. Our M15 is rigged with a reefing line run from the headsail to the cockpit (as well as a headsail downhaul). Just that doesn't solve all your problems, but it keeps you off the bow. You still have some minor details, like rigging sheets (pre-rigging these and tying the ends together would likely work) and eventually securing the headsail at the reef points (which you could heave-to and do), but it's a step in the right direction. That all being said, I'll quickly admit I've only done this at the dock. I find that reefing the main is sufficient for most of my sailing. It almost always happens when I'm flying too much sail for the conditions and way to much sail to handle the blast. Going from heeled 15 degrees to almost 30 and dipping the rail has always been a test of my pucker factor. At that point, the boat is fighting more than she is sailing. I doubt any of us would keep sailing until she went over in steady winds, but the sudden blast of wind would do it. So the lesson I've learned, since I almost always sail alone, is to err on the side of caution and reef early. For me, going forward alone to reef in too much wind is spooky. If someone has an easy way to do this, I'd like to hear it. When Thomas Howe owned the boat, he rigged her port hatch to lock down from the inside, so that is covered, but stuff on the cabin sole still flies around when she slams over. One thing I've not done in heavy winds, but may start, is to install the hatch boards, and lock down the hatch cover. That way, in a knockdown, you could get her righted or she would right herself before she could fill and sink. If not locked down, the hatch boards could simply float out of the "V" shaped opening. But as far as reefing, It's been my experience that in a blow, she sails just as well, if not better, when reefed down. Skipping over the whitecaps at 5+ knots and heeled 10 to 12 degrees is fun, whereas fighting to stay upright is not. Rudder bolts

While thinking about the electrical installation I decided to repair the tiller. There is a wedge of wood at the aft end of the tiller that as separated and was near to falling out. I removed the nut from the 1/4 " bolt holding the tiller on but bolt will not come out. I have put 3 in 1 oil on it and hammered on it with a punch and a rubber mallet with no progress. The bold has been turning with a a wrench but i think the aluminum spacer is turning with it. Any ideas on what to do with it? Well, back to the electrical while it soaks in oil.
