Hello Tod Mills et al, the old aluminum thru hull was simply a short length of 1.5 inch o.d. tubing...no flange or anything! it was glassed into the hull and was probably quite secure when new but over the years had become covered with a whiteish powdery material and had actually rotted all the way thru in several places right where the rubber hose ended. i was going to do a temporary fix by sleeving the inside by epoxying in a 1.25 i.d. piece but when i drove in the sleeve the whole thing came out with little effort. i am going to now epoxy in a short section of 1.25 i.d. copper water pipe made up by soldering a 45 degree elbow, 2 inches of tubing and a coupling. this will give me the correct outside diameter [ 1.5 in ] to match the 1.5 in. existing cockpit drain. this piece will not have any flange either unfortunately, but i am glassing it in really well with system three and it should be much stronger than the old piece which lasted over 27 years. this winter i may replace the old alum. cockpit drain but it still looks in good shape. since we are sailing now only on lakes and will not get pooped,I HOPE! i will not add any additional drains as jerry suggested in the old archives. hope you find all of this of interest. i think it applies only to the older M17's -pre wet locker. tomorrow morning we will begin the installation happy trails, ron and cathryn goodspeed M17 "hula pie" #o25

Mastmath: A Geometric M-Puzzle

Since it's a little slow right now, I thought I'd ask for the expertise of the mastmath whizzes out there. This will require higher mastmath skills, beyond my competence, maybe even up to eighth grade level. I'd like to rig a mast-raising system that can be used not only to initially raise and lower the mast, but on restless water also. Regardless of which method I end up with, I'd like to rig a couple of baby stays (actually shrouds) on either side of the mast to steady it while raising or lowering. I've already made them and they connect 62 inches up the mast (no, I don't remember why, but it must have had something to do with my first errant calculation, below), but I was never able to find the correct placement for the other end, on the cabin top. Not to get off on a tangent, but my first mental attempt was to put them in line with the mast and perpendicular to the centerline, under the assumption that the mast base is the center of a circle and the baby stays would essentially trace a radius, but no, since 1) the anchor points of these shrouds (on the cabin roof) are not in the same plane, and 2) the cabin roof slopes away. So the next brief thought was to put them in line between the existing shrouds and the mast base, but no, since the existing shrouds don't stay tight from mast up to mast down. I know it could be calculated by someone wiser using the degree of cabin slant (a slippery slope?), but can I find the points by fastening the baby shrouds to the mast and then drawing an arc on the cabin top with a pencil attached to the other end, first with the mast up, then with the mast down? Seems to me where the two arcs bisect would be the common attachment point to the cabin roof. Won't somebody give me a sine? I kinda tried to estimate it roughly once and I believe the point worked out to be several inches forward of the mast, which makes sense when one thinks of how the existing shrouds, which are only an inch or two forward of the mast, loosen as the mast is dropped. They're also MUCH lower than the mast base. It makes sense to me to make the anchor points as far away from the mast base as possible to be most effective, and in order to prevent my having to drill more holes (i.e., leaks and toe stubs) in the cabin top, to maybe clip them to the handrails at the edges of the cabin top, since they're only in use for short periods, anyway. The ones I've made may be too short, but it would be worth re-making them or adding wee turnbuckles to fine-adjust and/or add length. Can I assume that if these baby shrouds are tight at mast full up and mast dropped that it will be tight enough to prevent the mast from swinging sideways TOO much throughout the raising/lowering arc? Or, dast I utter it, is it possible that never the twain shall meet, and there is no common anchor point on the cabin top? At a point on a level plane with the mast base pivot point, install a SS ring at the bottom of the stay. From the ring make 2 more wire leads that go to your toe rail, fore and aft of the pivot point. As the mast is raised/lowered, the foreward or aftward stay controls the mast tention. The tension doesn't need to be tight all the way up/down. A little side sway is acceptable. To locate the "Ring" location point, lower the mast and place a 1/4" tubing through the mast pivot bolt hole. At either end is the ring placement point. If you don't want to raise the mast with your back, use a gin pole at the base of the mast. When the mast is up, the gin pole is horizontal on the foredeck. The jib halyard is attached at the end and your mainsheet is attached from the gin pole to the deck. Sandy

Hi Giles, The North Channel is a place I've wanted to explore for a long time. Not knowing your timetable, let me fill you in with the little I know. 1. There is a Cruising Guide to the North Channnel - privately published. I've seen reference to it in SAIL, Cruising World, and Messing About in Boats, and I gather it is very complete (but probably costly). 2. I once had some e-mail contact with a family in Parry Sound, and was discussing North Channel cruising with them. (You know, ramps, good spots, etc.) Their recommendation was to go further West to Spanish - for example - put in there and then have a broad reach back to Parry Sound. When you get to Parry Sound, hitch-hike back to Spanish or somewhere closer, retrieve your car and trailer, drive back to Parry Sound and haul the boat. That way you make the most of the prevailing winds, and have a pleasant down-wind sail all the way. 3. I wish I could help out with the Parry Sound couple's e-mail address - they were most helpful and knowledgeable - but after the correspondence I deleted it. 4. Check your Library and see if they have back issues of Cruising World or SAIL, and check them for the Georgian Bay / North Channel articles. If you can find them, the author generally lists publications; charts; etc, needed for the area. Sounds like a great trip. Happy sailing Connie

Georgian Bay, North Channel

I'm taking a trip up North next week. The plan includes taking my M-15 and heading for the North Channel of Georgian Bay. Actually, "plan" is being generous -- it's really just a matter of heading that way and (with luck) finding a cruising guide at a stopover in Detroit.
