Craig, Sorry I can't give you an exact time to coil shrouds, but it's a reasonably fast process. I'd estimate it won't take more than 5 minutes if you have strips of plastic shopping bags precut, and a roll of duct tape lying on the sail locker. On the M15 you are only coiling the forestay and the two shrouds. When I've finished coiling them I fasten the coils to the horizontal mast - again using my plastic bag strips and duct tape. They ride happily that way for the distances I travel - 250 miles up to Lake Champlain and back. If I were going cross country, I'd probably remove all shrouds and stow them, coiled, in the cabin. After a trip like that, half an hour more to rerig everything is perfectly acceptable. It saves on wear and tear on the trip. Connie

Hi Craig, I can't help you with any input on stainless cleaners for shrouds. I've never used any. Kinks should be avoided, by coiling the shrouds, even if you leave the turnbuckles, or lower fastenings in place. When I've lowered the mast, and am tying things down for a road trip, I coil the shrouds and tie them. I started using some shopping bag plastic around the parts of the coil and then put a piece of duct tape around the plastic. That way, you don't have the duct tape residue sticking to the shrouds. Now I use some lovely - almost like velcro - ties that I get when buying lettuce at my local STOP&SHOP supermarket. They are about 12 inches long, and stick to themselves just like velcro. Make great shroud straps. I also use them to tie halyards tightly to the mast before heading out on the road. Haven't lost a one yet! A great - for free - sail stop! Connie

A few answers, ask any others you wish. The Messabout can be whatever the participants want. If you want to be in the late summer regatta, go ahead. It would start at about 1:00 and have three races. Usually light winds this time of year. As a messabouter, I suggest a single race if we have enough interest. I guess just play it by ear. Launch area has a tie up dock. The cove area has a steep enough shore for boats like the Montgomerys to beach using an anchor to shore. The beach is better suited for paddlers and dinghies. If you want to come over on Friday, cone on down. Let me know and I'll be sure the gate is open. Hi Rich, I bought a 5 lb Bruce copy at WEST two years ago. Looking in their catalog, I don't see the 5 lb anchor listed any more, however, BOAT U.S. in their 2002 catalog, page 216 lists a Lewmar "Claw" anchor - same as the Bruce, in the 5 lb size, for $14.99. Their toll free telephone number is: 800-937-2628 - 24/7. I use the 5 lb Bruce copy, and find it a great anchor for my uses. Connie

greetings, for those of you following the exciting story of "hula pie"'s new thru hull here's the "as built" description: beginning at the cockpit drain which was scrapped,sanded and trimmed about .5 in. A "Gates" brand radiator hose #20450 is the perfect fit: 1.5 in. i.d.,with a quick bend to starboard then turning toward the 1.25 i.d. copper coupling [1.5 o.d.],3-4 inches 1.25 i.d. copper pipe followed by a1.25 X 45 degree elbow thru hull. the 45 degree elbow used as the actual part that goes thru the hull sits low and close to the hull allowing the drain to have fall all the way from the cockpit and can be glassed in with good strength. five layers of glass inside and out, a chopped glass fillet followed by several more layers over the top of the elbow made a good looking, strong patch. we have sailed her twice and not a drop of water! we just kept fooling with that centerboard, sticking a hacksaw blade up in the keel and tapping on the top and it finally came down! after diving and scrubbing with a wire brush it actually doesn't look too bad for a rusty piece of cast iron! that little winch really has to strain to get the board up. has anyone improved or reinforced this area? we want to sail the california delta this fall...any advice?...want to go? ron and cathryn goodspeed M17 "hula pie" #025

I'm about to order a Bruce 11 pound anchor through West Marine for my M15. An 11 pound Bruce seems rather overkill and too large for the M15 but I don't want to go through another overnight anchoring experience using the Danforth . The Danforth is great for San Francisco Bay where I daysail but I can't get it to hold well on overnight trips to Northern California Lakes. Past postings indicate that it's impossible to locate an 4 or even a 8 pound Bruce. Is it possible to find a 10 pound CQR?
