FOTD -- July 12, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is located in the middle of nowhere. Well, it's actually located in a parent fractal resembling a Mandelbrot set starting to split apart along its negative X-axis. The scene lies in the apparently empty space between the two spread- apart branches of the parent's Scepter Valley. When I first rendered today's image in the usual manner, it was a total flop. But thanks to Fractint's various rendering options, I raised the total flop to a rating of an impressive 8. The delicate and decorative fern-like features jutting in from the edges consist of 'outside' stuff exaggerated by the 'atan' option; the soft, gently colored aura surrounding the order-3.5 minibrot is 'inside' stuff made visible by the 'fmod' option. Put all of this together and the image honestly earns its 8. The name "Arc-Tangent Does It" came to mind when I tried the 'atan' feature on the original near-hopeless image and saw the unexpected improvement. Re-rendering the scene with the 'fmod' inside was an afterthought. The calculation time of 1-1/4 minutes will pass swiftly once the full glory of the scene becomes apparent. The humidity was quite low and the sky was completely cloud-free all day. True, the temperature of 88F 31C was on the warm side, but the dry air kept things quite comfortable. With the work caught up after a hectic week, my day was spent trying to relax. My next task is to stay caught up and relaxed so I can finish a logo for the FOTD web site. I have the design, which includes some 4-D stuff, worked out, but I have not yet done the footwork. FL spent the day Sunday giving hints that it was her XX'th birthday. (I had not forgotten.) A Maximum of Minibrots

Another minibrot. You know what they say, repetition is the sincerest form of flattery. Well actually they don't say it I just made it up and to be truthful I really don't know what it means, although it has a nice ring to it. More cool wet weather in Calgary but on parts of the eastern side of Canada there is a mini heat wave. Rather fractalish, a chaotic divergence of outputs. FOTD 11-07-10 (Quick Mandy Test [6])

FOTD -- July 11, 2010 (6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: On Saturday, with the end of the backup rush here at FC in sight, FL was a victim of an uncontrollable urge to set out on an antiquing trip. By the time we returned to FC, the sun was sinking beneath the western ridge, leaving me only a short time to come up with a worthy FOTD image. Luckily, the Mandelbrot set has no end of worthy images, and it runs extremely fast on the 2000mhz fractal-dedicated machine. I found today's worthy image hiding in the fourth valley out the main stem of the largest minibrot on the main stem of the parent Mandelbrot set. The magnitude of the image is past the point of perfect resolu- tion with conventional math. But if anyone wishes to eliminate the nearly invisible (at 640x480 resolution) slight trace of jagginess, they may shift to arbitrary math and wait a half hour instead of 6 seconds to see the image. The name "Quick Mandy Test" describes how I found the scene. The rating of a 6 is what I think the image is worth. It hardly erased the 25cm rainfall deficit for the year, but FL's flowers do appear a bit perkier. The afternoon temperature reached 88F 31C, still very warm, but with the lower humidity, the day's weather felt much more comfortable than Friday's. The fractal cats spent the day sleeping, but sprang to life when we returned around 8pm. The next FOTD will be posted in about 24 hours. Until then, take care, and save mankind. Stop crying about the trouble the earth is in and face the real problem. The earth will survive its infection of human viruses by developing a fever and killing them off. It's the future of humanity we're really worried about, not the temperature of the third planet from a mediocre star. FOTD 10-07-10 (Diamond Festival [6])

FOTD -- July 10, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Well, the cool air is up and running again here at FC, and in a day or two, things should be back to normal. Until then, we will have a couple undistinguished but still pleasant fractal images to enjoy. The parent fractal of today's image is a strange thing that came about when I combined 3 parts of Z^(-3) with 7 parts of Z^(-1.5) and added (1/C). It is best described as a single large rectangular bay with rounded corners, surrounded by a cloud of satellite minibrots. Today's image is located in the Seahorse Valley of one of these satellites on the east side of the main bay. The name "Diamond Festival" is one of those phrases that seems to have a deep between-the-lines meaning. Actually, it has no inner meaning at all. I chose it simply because, like the old song 'Stairway to Heaven' it causes the ears to perk up and the mind to exercise itself searching for a deep meaning that does not exist. The rating of a 6 is not too bad considering that we're still struggling here at FC to get caught up in the work that backed up while the cool air was down. The calculation time of 3-3/4 minutes will pass in somewhat less than a flash. But the higher humidity made it every bit as uncomfortable as Thursday, when the official high was 104F 40C. The only good news was the high humidity, which makes rain more likely. (We have a pretty serious drought in progress here at FC in Central Pennsylvania, and the farmers are praying.) The fractal cats spent the morning on the cool tile floor in the kitchen. When the air conditioning finally came on in the afternoon, they shifted to the cool air vent. My day was quite busy getting caught up in the work. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 09-07-10 (Oddball Minibrot [No Rating])

FOTD -- July 09, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With the outdoor heat still on and the indoor cool air still off, things were rather stifling here at Fractal Central on Thursday. We worked around the problem by limiting the time we ran the computers to periods of 30 minutes. In the fractal department, I grabbed the first image I came up with, added a dash of color, and declared it FOTD for July 09. The image is a close-up of a curious little minibrot with its main stem cut off. Very little of the usual symmetry is in evidence around the minibrot, though traces are clearly visible. The fiery effect was created intentionally in an effort to make something of nothing.. The generating expression mixes Z^2.5 with 1/2 part of Z^5 and adds straight C. The parent fractal resembles nothing as much as a flying wing. Today's scene is located on the southern shore line of the 'East Valley' of the parent. Of course, I could give the image no rating. The name "Oddball Minibrot" fairly describes the scene. FOTD -- July 08, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Everyone knows that the air conditioning always breaks down on the hottest day of the year. It's an evil plot. Well, that's what happened here at F.C. on Wednesday, which was actually only the second hottest day. But the breakdown meant that the computers could be run only for a half hour or so before they overheated, and this cut into my fractal time. But, being resourceful, I still managed to find a fractal in cold storage, which I present as today's image. The name "Back-up Special" indicates that I had today's image in storage in case of just such an emergency as arose here at FC on Wednesday. The image has no rating and it runs in a fast 36 seconds. The parent fractal was created by combining 2 parts of Z^2 with 0.1 part of Z^10 and adding straight C on every iteration. Today's scene is located near a cut-off satellite minibrot of the near- shapeless main fractal. The completely finished image is posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The heat remained in full force here at Fractal Central on Wednesday as the temperature reached 102F 39C. The increased humidity simply added to the discomfort. The fractal cats were so warm that they had to be scraped from the cool tile floor. With the cool air on the bust, my day was hot. Luckily, the work was not too heavy, letting us run the computers in short bursts to avoid overheating. If all goes well, which is never guaranteed, the cool air will be running and the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and when the heat strikes, take a cold shower. . I've always been a fervent believer in climate change; I witness it personally all the time - there can be no doubt it is real! I see Winter->Spring->Summer->Autumn happen every year! There is always a marked warming trend as Winter proceeds into Summer! People just gotta open their eyes and be more open minded! Cheers .
