FOTD and two fractals

Had a bit of trouble with the FOTD 09-04-10 Common-Sense_Cubic. Fractint said it couldn't read the coloring information so I used the classic Fractint "blues" map (which comes with the distribution zip) and it looks great. In other news I may have solved the gif to png conversion problem. I used the brute force method of setting up a Flickr account. Hope it works. Oooo look at that fractal its so bright and shiny. Already I'm Thinking of Christmas

On my Christmas wish list-a utility to convert Fractint's 16 bit .pot files to a high color depth format like say png or tga. While the continuous potential coloring method overcomes some of the limitations of the 256 color limit of the gif format the proprietary .POT file format is only recognized by Fractint. I can do a screen capture in DOSBox but I am limited to a resolution of 1024x768. Does anyone know of such a utility or workaround? Now on to today's fractal, a veggie like thing from Fractint's built in fn+fn formula. Love that green! FOTD 31-07-10 (No Minibrot Here [7])

FOTD -- July 31, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows an anti-minibrot, or maybe a negative minibrot, depending on what one chooses to call fractal hills instead of basins. Whatever the thing in today's image is called, it is the opposite of a minibrot. The area with the lowest iteration count lies at the center rather than at the edges, and the number of elements is arranged in decreasing powers of two as the center is approached rather than in increasing powers of two. This arrangement makes a mockery of Fractint's automatic logmap feature, which sets the logmap to the lowest iteration count it finds at the edges of the frame. In today's image the lowest count is at the center, causing the automatic logmap feature to set the logmap to a number that is far too high. The parent fractal is a normal Mandelbrot set -- normal on the surface, that is. In its depths, where today's image lies, it is anything but normal. The deeper one dives into the parent, the more things take on order-16 characteristics. Today's scene is located in a bit of debris in the main bay of a half-morphed minibrot lying in the trunk of an elephant on the southeast shore line of the large minibrot on the west branch of the filament extending from the period-3 bud on the north shore line of the main bay of the parent Mandelbrot set. (After reading this guide I doubt I'll ever find the location.) I named the image "No Minibrot Here". There certainly are minibrots in the arms, but they lie well beyond resolution. The rating of a 7 shows that I rather like the image. The calcula- tion time of 2-1/3 minutes means the image is an efficient one. FOTD 30-07-10 (The Inner Circle [7])

FOTD -- July 30, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "The Inner Circle". The name has nothing to do with a secret society; it refers to the unusually well defined order-23 minibrot that nearly fills the frame. Actually, the minibrot has some mathematical difficulties. The minibrot itself has 22 lobes, which is just what would be expected; and there are 23 peach-colored elements immediately surrounding the minibrot, which is just as it should be. But beyond here things go drastically wrong, for there are only 20 fractal arms radiating from the minibrot, and this is certainly not the number of arms that should be there. The scene is located in the period-10 radical on the southeast shore line of the parent fractal, which on the surface is a perfect Mandelbrot set. I assume that the period-10-ness is somehow mixed up with the order-23-ness to create exactly 20 arms, though regardless of how I combine the numbers, I can't make it come out right. It really doesn't matter however. The minibrot by itself is impressive enough to rate a 7, which is no small feat for a fractal that is basically a glorified circle. The calculation time of just under 3 minutes will pass in a flash. The trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> where the finished image is posted, will pass in half a flash. The image is also filled with numerous anti-minibrots. I might dredge up one and present it as tomorrow's FOTD. A morning shower was followed by partly cloudy skies, lower humidity and a temperature of 86F 30C here at Fractal Central on Thursday afternoon. The fractal cats agreed -- they stretched on the tile floor and slept until the sun went down. My day was busy; FL's was the same. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- July 29, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The warhorse Mandelbrot set came through again on Wednesday, when I needed a fractal in a hurry. On a whim I checked the period-10 radical on the southeast shore line of the main bay. This is where the East Valley elephants are just starting to take shape, which explains the name "In a Half-Elephant". Searching deep in a remote spiral, I found today's minibrot. I brought the scene to life by rendering it with the outside set to 'tdis'. This option raises the calculation time from 5 seconds to 7 minutes, but the result is worth the wait. The image is something rather new from the M-set. The rating of a 7 shows that I consider the image a rather unexpected one to come from the familiar M-set. The calculation time may be cut from 7 minutes to 5 seconds by changing the 'outside' from 'tdis' to 'iter', but doing this misses all the fun. The finished image is available as usual on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The heat and humidity returned to Fractal Central on Wednesday, when the temperature reached 93F 34C and the fractal cats took up residence on the cool tile floor in the kitchen. FOTD -- July 28, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows the last midget out the main spike of the Mandelbrot set that is large enough to be resolved with conventional math. The little fellow is centered around -1.999999117587324 on the X-axis. But whatever you do, don't be expecting an everyday minibrot when you run today's parameter file. Even I have no idea of how the scene is oriented. We're in the fourth dimension here, and the angle of today's image was found at random by the evolver feature of Fractint. To add to the confusion, the scene was rendered with the 'outside' set to 'fmod' with a proximity of 1.5, which changes the normally solid outside parts to a series of rubbery, melting loops. And it goes without saying that I did ample stretching and skewing to create the image. The melting loops in the image remind me of a famous but rather strange painting of melting watches draped over a dead tree limb in the middle of nowhere, so I named the image "Persistence of Space". (Actually, the artist was more obsessed with crutches than watches.) The rating of a 7 indicates that in my opinion the image is notably superior to yesterday's. The calculation time is a very brief 20 seconds, and even this brief time may be saved by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> and thereby avoiding the calculation. Tuesday turned into a repeat of Monday here at Fractal Central. The temperature reached 86F 30C with low humidity, while the sky remained spotted with kodachrome clouds.
