FOTD -- July 22, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: When the going gets tough, the tough get going . . . to the Mandelbrot set for their fractals. Things were a bit tough here at FC on Wednesday, so I got going to the M-set. I checked one of the 'perturbed' sets and found a super-spiral at the edge of a small period-26 ghost-bud on the southern shore line of the main bay of the M-set. A quick bit of fancy color work produced today's image. I named the image "Infinite MegaSpiral". The spiral is a huge one, sure to please every fan of fantastic spirals, and it goes on down to infinity. The rating of a 6 is held down by the over-familiarity of the Mandelbrot set. The 'perturbed' sets are less familiar, but also less pleasing. The calculation time of 10 seconds is faster than light, which means the calculation will finish a few seconds before it begins. The way to avoid such paradoxes is to view the image already calculated on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Heat and humidity made things rather unpleasant for both man and cats here at Fractal Central on Wednesday. But the weather took a sudden turn for the better at 6pm, when a sharp thunder-shower moved in and dropped the temperature from the high of 93F 34C to a comfortable 75F 24C. And the 1cm of rain was just what FL's garden needed. The fractal cats ducked for cover when a sudden crack of thunder from a nearby lightning strike shook the house, but showed their noses as soon as the all-clear was sounded. My day was busy enough to keep concern away and slow enough for me to find a quick scene in the workhorse Mandelbrot set. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- July 21, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image reminds me of a reservoir of hot magma lurking just beneath the earth's crust, which is why I named it "Boiling Magma". Actually, magma doesn't boil until it reaches the surface and becomes lava, but we'll ignore that small detail. If the image seems a bit familiar, there's a good reason. It's a blow-up of a section of yesterday's Seahorse Valley image, with only a bit of skewing and a small tweaking of a few color registers. The rating of a 7 seems to be about what the image is worth. And the calculation time of 3-1/4 minutes is also a good value. A mix of clouds and sun with a temperature of 86F 30C made Tues- day a rather warm but pleasant day here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats, who never get to go outside, had a brief thrill when a roaming tomcat passed through the yard, leaving his scent behind as a calling card. FOTD 20-07-10 (Valley of Fire [6])

FOTD -- July 20, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows Seahorse Valley in a way it has never been seen before. I named the image "Valley of Fire" because of the thin fiery stripe down the middle, which is actually the space between the two branches of the valley as it appears when seen from the large period-2 bud of the Mandelbrot set, looking east toward the main bay. I cannot begin to describe the four-dimensional orientation of today's slice, which is rotated from the Mandelbrot direction in four different ways. All I can say is 'see it to believe it'. The rating of a 6 implies more mathematical interest than artis- tic worth. The calculation time of 20 seconds is faster than light, which will not only turn space inside-out, but will send the fractal- ist back in time. My advice is to stay in the present moment by viewing the fin- ished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Lots of heat prevailed here at Fractal Central on Monday, while a brief shower that fell around noon merely steamed up the air, which was already at a temperature of 91F 33C. The fractal cats briefly looked up from their spots on the cool kitchen floor, turned over, and went back to sleep. My day rated about a 6 on the zero-to-ten scale of being busy. FL's was about the same. I have one more small tweak to do on the FOTD logo before I send it to Paul on Tuesday to put on the FOTD web site. Actually, I appear to be turning into one of those annoying graphic customers who are never satisfied and always want to make one more small change on their job. FOTD -- July 19, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a zoom into the bit of Seahorse Valley that was stretched across the center of yesterday's image. It took quite of anti-distorting to undo the stretching distortion in yester- day's image, but once this was done, the result was very near perfect. The incredible thing with today's image is that it calculates in 13 minutes, but shows the spider-web, peanut-hole features that normally lie much deeper in Seahorse Valley and take hours to calculate. The name "The Wrong Angle" refers to the fact that in the image, Seahorse Valley is viewed nearly edge-on, yet appears quite undistorted. The rating of a 6 is mostly for mathematical interest. The calculation time of 13-1/2 minutes is admittedly a drag, and I can give no guarantee that the result will offer full compensa- tion. My advice is to view the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> BTW, I have simplified the new logo for the FOTD web page, which was getting over-worked and over-complicated. It shows my favorite fractal and the six perpendicular slices of the 4-D Julibrot. I'll send it to Paul on Monday. FOTD -- July 18, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yesterday's unusual scene in Seahorse Valley kept me thinking most of the day on Saturday. In yesterday's image the Mandel- brot aspect of the valley is totally invisible. In today's image however it is visible in grossly stretched form as the open strip across the center of the frame. If this open strip is stretched about 57 times in the vertical direction, the valley itself will become visible, cut off on the E-W sides but decorated with all kinds of new and unusual stuff. This can be done in the Z-f6 screen by setting the X-magnification factor to 0.0175. The orientation of the image is rotated one degree from the Oblate and then rotated 45 degrees toward the Julia. All this rotation happens in the 4th dimension, so don't try to make sense of it. The name "Seahorse at Length" refers to the piece of Seahorse Valley stretched across the center of the frame. I rated the image at a 6 because I did too little work on the coloring. The calculation time of 16 seconds is no mistake, so there will be no wasted time if the image proves disappointing. The risk of disappointment may be totally eliminated however by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> A rather hot day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Saturday. At least the fractal cats thought so. They spent most of the day stretched on the cool tile floor. I also thought it was hot, and spent the day within range of the cool air. Everyone I mentioned it to also agreed that the high temperature of 93F 34C was indeed hot. FOTD -- July 17, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: NOTICE! Today's image will calculate correctly only with the new version of the SliceJulibrot4 formula, which is included in today's parameter file. If you have the old version on file, discard it and replace it with the new version. The new version of the SliceJulibrot4 formula includes the ability to control the escape radius with the imag(p5) parameter, which is an important part of today's image. All images created with the old version of the formula will run correctly with the new version, but some images created with the new version may not run correctly with the old version. If the image turns out looking like featureless chaos, it was run with the old version of the SliceJulibrot4 formula. The correct image consists of amber elements with blue highlights, and is not at all chaotic. The work rush continues here at FC, so today's image is another quick one. Believe it or not, it's a scene in the Seahorse Valley area of the Mandelbrot set. But instead of lying in the Mandelbrot orientation of the Julibrot, today's view lies in the Oblate orientation, which is determined by the imag(c) and real(z) axes. Actually, the escape radius of today's image is 0.5, which means everything should cut off at a radius of 0.7071 from the origin. But today's scene lies well beyond that distance, yet it is not cut off. This is just one more in the unending string of mysteries connected with fractals. The name "Seahorse Madness" refers to the crazy, very un- seahorse-like image. The rating of a 7 includes more math than artistry. The calculation time of just over one minute will pass in a flash.
