FOTD -- July 27, 2010 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: An image recently posted on the Fractint list resembles a fleet of shiny alien space craft deploying in outer space for an attack on earth. When I was a far younger person, (think age 20), I kind of believed in (or hoped for) aliens from space visiting earth. I assumed that all those reports of unidenti- fied flying objects and all those fuzzy photographs could not possibly all be wrong. I supposed that someone with a good camera would eventually take a clear photo of one of the alien ships and perhaps even a clear photo of an alien itself. Too bad I had to change my mind. The belief was a lot of fun. Today it is becoming blatantly obvious that all the reports of aliens and their ships, as well as all the fuzzy photographs, are nothing more than a lot of fun, and always have been. The thing that changed my mind is the fact that nowadays there are billions of people traveling about with ready-to-aim-and-shoot cameras, yet as far as I know, not a single clear picture of an alien space craft has ever been taken. By this time, if the aliens actually were here, the laws of chance alone would have produced hundreds, even thousands of clear photographs of the aliens and their ships. What a let-down. But there is a consolation prize. When I was a far younger person, (20), I thought all the reports of paranormal phenomena were a pile of wishful-thinking stuff. Since then however, I have had enough personal experiences to convince me, despite the rational disagreement of skeptics, that this universe of ours has more dimensions and more unknown stuff happening than we can imagine, and a growing number of physicists seem to share my opinion. See what a simple fractal fleet of alien space ships can do! Today's FOTD fractal makes no such grandiose claims. It is simply a scene in the Z^(2.5)+C Mandeloid as it appears 20 levels up the ladder when no function is applied. Being purely of average quality, the image rates a purely average 5. The name "Wiggly Squiggly" has nothing to do with an old cartoon rabbit. It simply describes a marginally impressive aspect of the image. The best feature of today's FOTD is the calculation time of 5-2/3 minutes, most of which can be saved by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> BTW, I usually prefer simplicity in my designs, but the new FOTD logo might be a bit too simple. I might consider adding some interesting but not distracting fractal patterns to the sides of the central gothic arch. I am undecided. Absolutely perfect weather held forth all day Monday here at Fractal Central. The temperature of 81F 27C was made even more pleasant by low humidity, while the kodachrome blue skies and puffy white clouds added the perfect backdrop. (Too bad they no longer make Kodachrome film.) All this perfection passed far over the fractal cats' heads. They spent most of the day sleeping. My day was average; tomorrow will likely be a repeat. FOTD 26-07-10 (Nothing At All [7])

FOTD -- July 26, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Someone once told me that there is nothing to be found in fractals with negative exponents of Z. Well, today I checked the Z^(-2)+C fractal and found nothing. Today's image shows the nothing that I found. The name "Nothing At All" confirms the nothingness. Actually, the image is not a Mandeloid. It is rotated 30 degrees toward the oblate direction, and has quite a bit of stretching and skewing included. The 5-pointed, rounded star- like elements are something entirely new in my experience. It's hard to give a rating to nothing, but if something were there, it would have rated a 7. Assuming something actually is there, I rated the image at a 7 despite its blatantly feminine pastel-pink appearance. The calculation time of 1-2/3 minutes will pass in a flash. FOTD -- July 25, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is late due to a massive laziness attack that I suffered on Saturday, when I spent the day watching the non-news on TV. The brevity of this discussion shows that the attack continues. The image, which was created by combining 0.1 part of Z with 0.2 part of Z^56 and adding 1/C, is barely unusual enough to earn its rating of a 6. The parent fractal is quite unusual however. It resembles a giant cogwheel, with today's image in a small valley on the western edge. The name "One Way Alone" means as little to me as to anyone. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is a fair price to pay for the image. FOTD 24-07-10 (Doomsday Scenario [7])

FOTD -- July 24, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene on the NNW shore line of the large main bay of the (-Z)^(1.19)+C Mandeloid. I named it "Doomsday Scenario" when I had the impression of a comet tearing through the atmosphere, ready to strike the earth and send mankind the way of the dinosaurs. Yes, I know there are more than enough doomsday shows on the TV channels nowadays, but I can see no harm in adding my own version of doom -- a fractal comet that ends the grand experi- ment of quasi-intelligent life on planet earth. Actually, I doubt we'll need a comet to bring about the end of the civilized world. We appear to be on the verge of doing it ourselves, and only a fool would think some super-technology will be able to save us. The good news is that when man is gone, fractals will remain, though I wonder if anyone else in the universe will know or care. Today's image rates a 7. It's reasonably unusual and certainly colorful enough. The calculation time of just over 2 minutes is fast enough; viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site is even faster. FOTD -- July 23, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I always have enjoyed elephants. When I was young, they were my favorite animals at the circus. Now that I'm no longer young, they are my favorite animals in the Mandelbrot set. Of course, it doesn't take much to make elephants my favorite animals in the M-set, since the only other animals are seahorses, which are more of a curiosity. The Mandelbrot elephants live in the valley on the east side of the M-set, which is appropriately named "Elephant Valley", or sometimes simply "East Valley". An infinity of the ponderous pachyderms inhabit the valley, every one of them standing guard over its own particular bud. But they guard their buds only in the Mandelbrot plane of the Julibrot. In the other planes, the elephants forget their buds and wander off in different directions, becoming ever more distorted the farther they roam. In today's image this distor- tion has become quite large. In fact, some elephants are only partly there, which is the reason I named the image "Elephant Pieces". Today's image is sliced in the 'Oblate' direction, which is determined by the imaginary (y) direction of the Mandelbrot planes and the real (x) direction of the Julia planes. The slice passes through the East Valley complex of the Julibrot at point +0.28 on the X-axis of the M-set, but being centered at the point 0.5 on the imaginary Julia axis, it is far from being centered on the valley. I gave the image no rating. After all, how artistic can bits and pieces of four-dimensional elephants be? At this point, I'm suffering 4-D overload, so I recommend running the included parameter file and waiting 10 minutes or viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Near perfect conditions prevailed here at Fractal Central on Thursday. The temperature reached a summer-like 86F 30C, the humidity was low, and the kodachrome (digitally enhanced) blue sky was decorated with puffy white clouds. The fractal cats must have approved, for they spent an unusually long time gazing out the side window, watching the birds fly by. My day, as well as FL's day, was quite busy, which is all well and good, but I still would like more time for fractals. And speaking of fractals, the next one will be posted in 24 hours.
