FOTD -- April 04, 2010 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Bright Holiday", a very appropriate name. Today is Easter Sunday, and in Russia the popular name for Easter is 'Bright Holiday'. The colors of the image are very bright, so I decided to take full advantage of the coincidental situation?' The parent fractal is a wonder to behold. In fact, it's a wonder how it can be called a fractal at all. This parent is nothing more than a narrow straight vertical stick with buds along its edges. It came about when I subtracted plain Z from two parts of Z^2 then added (1/C). The scene is located in a kind of seahorse-tail associated with a bud on the eastern edge of the northern branch of the parent stick. The seahorse theme permeates the image, with curly tails beyond counting. The tiny minibrot at the center is a bit mis-shapen in the SF5 image, though at higher resolution it quickly shapes up. The rating of a 7-1/5 includes 1/2 point for the extra coloring work. The calculation time of just under 9 minutes is on the slow side, so why not save the effort and take a virtual trip to view the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Today is Easter Sunday. I am not a believer in resurrecting gods, but I am not a totally disbelieving Atheist either. My opinion is that something must have happened a couple thousand years ago because a religion certainly did get started. Rather hazy skies dimmed the sun slightly here at Fractal Central on Saturday, but the temperature of 75F 24C made up for any solar weakness. FOTD 03-04-10 (Zexpe From Behind [7])

FOTD -- April 03, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us to the minus Zexpe fractal. This is not the (+Z)^(-e)+C fractal, but the (-Z)^(+e)+C fractal. The minus before the iterated Z makes a big difference. The resulting parent fractal is totally changed, since the (-Z)^3+C Mandeloid, which is close to the minus Zexpe fractal, is rotated 90 degrees. Today's image lies in one of the two East Valleys of the parent, rather deep in a star that terminates the filament of one of the 1.5-elephant radicals. I rated the image at a 7 because that's what I think it is worth. The name "Zexpe From Behind" indicates that we are approaching iterated Z from the opposite direction. The calculation time of 12-3/4 minutes is admittedly slow, so why not listen to a song or two while the computer does all the calculating work. FOTD 02-04-10 (Mandelbrot Scene [7])

FOTD -- April 02, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There is not much to be said about today's image, which takes a full half-hour to calculate even on my fireball 2000mhz machine. It's a very deep scene, showing a minibrot on a filament extending from a larger minibrot on a larger filament extending from the southwest shore line of the third bud out the negative X-axis of the M-set. The rating of a 7 was largely earned by the extreme magnitude. The name "Mandelbrot Scene" is a simple description. The magnitude demands arbitrary precision math, which makes the image a very slow one. I leave it to the individual fractal fan to decide whether the result is worth the effort. By far the best way to view the image is to view it in finished form on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> An almost summer-like day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Thursday, with totally cloud-free skies. The temperature of 79F 26C kept the fractal cats content, despite the fact that the afternoon sun is now getting higher in the sky and no longer covers their entire window shelf. Actually, I feel a bit sorry for the new fractal cats, who unlike the old fractal cats did for so many years, do not get to go outside and explore a holly thicket. (We have no thicket at New FC.) But the new guys are happy enough indoors, and with traffic, hawks, coyotes, black bears, feral cats, etc. in the area, they are much safer not going outside. Another Oops! In my post Paul N.Lee's Questions and Oops! there is a poorly worded sentence. What reads "The Disk/RAM entries in fractint.cfg can be edited in Notepad to provide custom resolutions.I copied some lines from the default Fractint.cfg as an example.The new cfg file must be saved in the old txt format. Today's fractals demonstrate the initorbit command. Press the G key which brings up the interactive startup parameter screen to enter values.These instructions were taken from the Fractint manual. "Enter values in the form INITORBIT=pixel INITORBIT=nnn/nnn Allows control over the value used to begin each Mandelbrot-type orbit. "initorbit=pixel" is the default for most types; this commandi initializes the orbit to the complex number corresponding to the screen pixel. First the Oops!I forgot to enter anything in the subject line in my last post and I might have made a mess of things.Hope this rectifies the situation. Some replies to Paul N. Lee's questions about running Fractint under DOSBox and Vista.Hopefully this information will be helpful to other mailing list members. To begin with DOSBox is an emulator that allows old DOS games and applications to run under modern OS's like XP and Vista.Go to http://www.dosbox.com/ to learn more and download both DOSBox and D-Fend Reloaded.I use the latest versions- version 0.73 for DOSBox and version 0.9.3 for D-Fend Reloaded. DOSBox itself uses a command line -it looks like old DOS.D-Fend Reloaded provides a familiar graphical interface to simplfy configuring DOSBox.To get the maximum speed when setting up D-Fend Reloaded I choose Max under the CPU section of the hardware profile.Other values I left at their defaults.About using IrfanView (or something similar) for resizing and anti-aliasing on my blog.My blog is just starting and decided to introduce myself to the mailing list members first.I figure if you suscribe to the mailing list you are interested making fractals so I posted the Fractint generated gifs with the par information intact so they could be read by Fractint and serve as a starting off point to generate new images.Which reminds me I forgot to include the formula information! Maybe I should include both original and anti-aliased graphics in my posts. Finally about large gifs.The Disk/RAM entries in fractint.cfg can be edited in Notepad to provide custom resolutions.I copied some lines from the default Fractint.cfg as an example.The new cfg file must be saved in the old txt format. FOTD 01-04-10 (Deep Deeper Deepest [7.5])

FOTD -- April 01, 2010 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With a rush in progress here at FC on Wednesday, I turned to the good old Mandelbrot set to produce a fractal. The fractal I quickly found lies deep in the eastern side of the northern branch of Seahorse Valley. The image is unusual in that its maxiter is an even 1,000,000, its logmap is 91500 and its magnitude is over 3*(10^13). But despite these extreme values, the scene calculates in a reason- able 6-2/3 minutes, at least on my 2000mhz machine. A slightly better resolution may be achieved by calculating the image with arbitrary precision math in effect, but this will exact a huge penalty in calculation time. (The arbitrary precision calcula- tion will take about 24 hours.) As for the appearance of the image itself, it holds nothing exceptional and rates a 7-1/2, which is above FOTD average. The name "Deep Deeper Deepest" is not an english lesson, it refers to the extreme values of the scene. The outside conditions improved greatly here at Fractal Central on Wednesday as the sun broke through the clouds and the temperature soared to 70F 21C. The inside conditions also improved as the fractal cats put on their best moods. My day was acceptable, though busier than I would have preferred. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 or so hours.
