FOTD 17-04-10 (Deep in the Grove [8])

FOTD -- April 17, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image will get little description. It needs to be seen to be appreciated fully. The parent fractal is little more than a Mandeloid shaped like a letter V turned on its left side. A rudimentary East Valley lies at the apex of the parent, with today's image located a short distance east of this tiny valley. I rated the image at an 8, one full point of which is due to my coloring efforts. I worked on the colors for almost an hour before I somehow managed to virtually eliminate all traces of the color-band boundaries. It is possible to make 256 colors look like 16-million, but it takes some doing and not all fractals can be colored this smoothly. (I wonder whether the same degree of smoothness will appear on differently adjusted monitors.) The name "Deep in the Grove" was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the finished product. If it ever meant any- thing, the meaning is now totally forgotten. The calculation time of 5-3/4 minutes is about what the image is worth. The trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> will be quicker, but the fun of watching the image come to life will be lost. Friday was very pleasant here at Fractal Central, with partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 79F 26C. It stayed pleasant until 6pm, when a thunder-shower moved in from the west and spoiled the evening. The fractal cats were unconcerned through all of it. They have no interest in the sun when it's warm, and the thunder was not too loud. My day was average, which is all one could hope for. FOTD 16-04-10 (In a Lost Valley [8])

FOTD -- April 16, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I gave today's image a rating of 8, which might be a bit liberal. I chose the rating because I kind of enjoy the coloring, and I did most of it myself with only minor help from the program. And then I named the image "In a Lost Valley". The reason for the name will be obvious once the exact location of today's image is seen in its parent fractal. This parent fractal came about when I entered some whimsical values into the MandAutoCritInZ formula. It is little more than scattered bits and pieces of assorted Mandeloid stuff surrounded by disconnected tiny Mandelbrot sets. Today's image is located in the west branch of the valley separating the two largest bays. Since the valley is not really a true one, but a random point of connection between two independent but overlapping Mandeloids, one might consider the valley to be 'lost', which explains the name. The calculation time of 4-1/4 minutes is fair enough for today's image. I leave it to the intrepid fractalist to decide whether the finished image is worth the effort. The way to avoid all this concern about value is by zooming out to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> and viewing the already-calculated image posted there. A really great day passed unappreciated here at Fractal Central on Thursday, as the sun shone brilliantly and the temperature reached 75F 24C. I was busy working most of the time, while the fractal cats were busy keeping watch on the stray cats that for some reason were quite numerous in the back yard. FL spent most of the time thinking about this year's fractal garden. If all goes well, and I can see no reason why it should not, the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 15-04-10 (Bubbles from the Past [8])

FOTD -- April 15, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a slight revision of an image that first appeared in April, 1997, the first month of the FOTD. When I started the FOTD on the Fractal Art list, I expected to post maybe 5 or 10 images, showing that complicated formulas are not necessary for interesting fractals. Since then I have posted over 4500 fractal images, and the supply of new images is in no danger of running dry. I think today's image is the only one I have created with the formula named 'bubbles'. The formula resembles one of my MandNewt series however, so I might have simply used the same formula under a different name. Curiously, the formula has no variable parameters. Most of the interest, which is in the bubbles, was created by rendering the image with the inside set to bof60. When the dust settled, I gave the result a rating of an 8, despite the fact that it is not entirely new. The name "Bubbles from the Past" needs no explanation. The calculation time of 1-2/3 minutes will seem like 30 seconds once the bubbles start popping into view. Or, to escape the popping, the finished image is instantly available on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Wednesday began with fog here at Fractal Central, but a strong sun cleared away the fog by 10am, leading to a sunny day with a temperature of 66F 19C, all of which kept the fractal cats happy. My day, as well as FL's day, was happy also. The work was light and the fractal, despite its venerable age, turned out pretty good. FOTD -- April 14, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I put near an hour of effort into trying to make something of yesterday's image, and I achieved nothing. In today's case, a single strike of the <enter> key told the program to supply the coloring. Fractint did an admirable job. All I had to do was a bit of tweaking. The parent fractal, and of course the image itself, came about when I combined 7 negative parts of Z^(-1.1) with one negative part of Z^(-6.2) and added (1/C) on each iteration. This parent is a tremendously over-sized thing. Only a tiny part of it fits on the default opening screen, which has a magnitude of 0.67. Today's image is located inside a huge terminal ring far to the south-southwest of the opening screen. The rating of an 8 means I consider the image good enough to be worth 8 points. The name "A Plethora of Ohs" does not imply gasps of surprise at the sight of the finished image. It refers to the countless bright O-shaped circles scattered throughout the scene. (Actually a plethora means too much of a good thing.) The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is brief enough to bring impatience to no one but the most impatient. Total satisfaction for even these few may be found on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> where the image is or soon will be posted for instant and total satisfaction. Lots of clouds were overhead here at Fractal Central on Tuesday, though the expected rain slipped by to the south. The tempera- ture of 55F 13C was a bit too chilly for the fractal cats, who actually never worry about outdoor conditions, because they never have the chance to venture outside in the first place. My day was moderately busy; Wednesday should be the same. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and I have thousands of photographs of fractals, but I have yet to see a single real fractal being photographed. Tdis Coloring

The scaly (layered?) appearance of todays fractals is the result of the outside=tdis combined with high bailout values. According to the Fractint manual tdis "colors the pixels according to the total distance traveled by the orbit." In these two formulas the bailout value can be directly inputed. Other formulas can be rewritten to allow the user to select the bailout values. The value of bailout that produces a desired effect varies with the formula and determined by experiment ( also known as taking a blind guess). This method does't work all time but often enough to give it a try.
