FOTD -- April 13, 2010 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There is no FOTD for April 12. This is because the antiquing bug struck on Sunday, and we spent the day browsing an antique emporium in Hanover, PA, the city where they make potato chips. FL found a water color of a stork nesting on a chimney top, with a cathedral tower in the background. She insisted that we must have the picture. (Actually it's not a bad picture.) Today's image however is totally middling. It takes too long to finish, and when it is finished, it doesn't quite appear to have its act together. I wasted nearly one hour on the coloring and ended up with an image that rates an everyday-average 5. The name "Filamentary Network" is a description of the image. The zig-zaggy effect throughout the scene is a bit unusual, though not enough to raise the rating above average. The parent fractal is a Mandelbrot set with its main spike starting to split apart. Today's image is located in the area between the two large bifurcated minibrots. The wait of 12 minutes while the parameter file runs may be avoided by visiting the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Sunday and Monday brought partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 64F 18C to Fractal Central. The fractal cats, who wish they could go outside and play like all the other cats, accepted the conditions. For me, Sunday was spent in the antique emporium, which is not too bad a way to spend a day, while Monday was an average workday. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. File formats and bloggers sense of humour (and a fractal)

According to the blogger support forum,blogger has been known to convert gifs to pngs. Not only that at least two gifs of mine have been resized. I've checked my uploaded gifs and see some but not all have been converted. I can see no pattern to their behaviour regarding what is converted and what is resized.This is disheartening since the main reason I started my blog was to provide a source of completed fractals in gif form with Fractint readable parameter information like Jim Muth's postings. Until the bloggers of the world rise up and overthrow the file format tyrants I'll just have to put up with it and be extra meticulous when posting par and frm information to the mailing list. A possible long term solution might be photo hosting service like Flickr. FOTD 11-04-10 (Puzzled Predicament [7])

FOTD -- April 11, 2010 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image has a rating of a question mark. Since the image is the first of its kind, there is nothing with which to compare it that would determine its worth. In fact, the object at the center might not even be an object at all. Even though it has a vague Mandelbrot shape, it certainly is not a minibrot. Maybe it's nothing more than a near-circular grouping of eight pink almost-fractal trees. But as the colors show, something is dif- ferent inside the circle of pink trees. On each iteration the generating expression subtracts 1.08 parts of Z^(-1.3) from 0.72 part of Z^(-2.2) then adds (1/C) to create a humdrum fractal with little to note. This parent fractal is a sprawling thing consisting of two partially merged main bays with a chunk of chaos in the middle. Today's image is located in a very tiny valley inside a tiny bay on the west side of this chaotic chunk. At this point, words fail me. The name "Puzzled Predicament" indicates my loss for words. Saturday brought near normal early spring conditions to Fractal Central. The fractal cats would have preferred the temperature of 63F 17C to have been a few degrees warmer, but they seemed pretty much satisfied with things the way they actually were. The cloudless sky pleased the humans in the area, especially FL, who started work on her 2010 garden. My day was about average for a Saturday; Sunday should be a con- tinuation -- that is unless an unexpected antiquing expedition comes up. If no expedition arises, the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours, otherwise it will appear in 48 hours. FOTD 10-04-10 (None of It is Real [7])

FOTD -- April 10, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: On Friday I took Z^(3.3) and mixed it with 1/2 part of Z^(5.5) before adding straight C. The resulting parent fractal is a north-south thing with two blunt bays and something resembling a balloon with a winged basket hanging from it. Today's image is located in the left wing of the winged basket hanging from the parent balloon. Most of the effect was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'tdis', which colors the points according to how far they travel before finally escaping. The calculation time of just under 10 minutes is more than the image is worth, so I recommend visiting the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> where the image is posted for instant if not quite total bliss. I named the image "None of It is Real". (The word 'it' in the name refers to the world of fractals.) I am still waiting for someone to get a clear photograph of the actual Mandelbrot set. When I see one, I will change the name of today's image to "All of it is Real". The rating of a 7 is pretty much how we've been going lately. The image is too chaotic to rate any higher, and the colors tend to muddiness as well. At lunch on Friday, FL and I decided to skip the depressing end- of-world stuff and tuned to the animal channel just in time to catch one of those I-was-eaten-alive-by-a-great-white-shark-and- survived programs. I wonder what ever happened to the old 'funny animals' type shows that were actually enjoyable to watch. Perhaps we all secretly realize that the end is nigh. It might explain why these shows are so popular. Friday here at Fractal Central featured (if it can be called a feature) lots of clouds, brisk winds and a temperature of 50F 10C. When the fractal cats felt the chill, they searched for the sun on their shelf. Unfortunately, the clouds hung tough, and even if the sun had appeared, its angle is now so high that very little of it would have reached the cats' shelf. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care and if our end is nigh, we must have done something very wrong somewhere along the line. If our species could relive its past, what could it do differently that would have avoided its present impending doom. FOTD 09-04-10 (Common-Sense Cubic [7])

FOTD -- April 09, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With or without humans in the universe, there would probably still be fractals. Or maybe we invented fractals, and if we were to vanish, the fractals would vanish with us. And speaking of fractals, we have a semi-outstanding one for today. At first glance, the parent fractal of today's cubic image looks like a Mandelbrot set. Closer examination however reveals cubic tendencies just beneath the surface. The scene is located on the X-axis just beyond the large mini- brot on the main stem of the parent. This large minibrot is shaped much like the Zexpe fractal, with today's image lying in its west valley. I named the image "Common-Sense Cubic". The name could mean anything one wishes. The rating of a 7 means the image is a little better than average. The calculation time of 13 seconds is no mistake. Even an image with a rating of 1 would be worth this brief wait. My philosophical energies were once again aroused on Thursday, and this time I did not let the opportunity to have a philosoph- ical conversation pass. To avoid non-fractal philosophizing, skip to the last paragraph. FL sometimes accuses me of being insensitive to the problems of the environment, when in fact I am all too aware of the true situation. As we ate lunch on Thursday, we watched one of those doomsday climate-change programs, this one about the melting of the glaciers in the Himalayas. The glaciers are definitely melt- ing because of the warming climate, and if the melting is not stopped, over one billion people in India and other countries, who depend on the glaciers for their water, will be left without water. The program claimed that if this happens, the death toll could run into tens of millions. I told FL that the earth is definitely warming. Only the amount of warming that is caused by man's activity is in question. But the real environmental problem is the number of people that the earth with its limited resources is being asked to support. The planet already holds several times the population it can support in a comfortable (think American style) manner. The obvious but unworkable solution is to rid the planet of its excess population, either by euthanasia or mass sterilization. If we fail to drastically cut our own numbers very soon, and indeed, because of the moral issues, we will surely not do this, the planet will cut our numbers for us by making the quality of life unbearable for humanity. And no amount of liberal green- energy dreams or conservative no-problem, business-as-usual bellowing can change this. As history shows, when life becomes unbearable, people react in ways that are irrational and self- destructive. Is this kind of thinking callous and insensitive? FL says we must not think such thoughts about death and sterilization, we must go 'totally green', whatever that means. I am certainly not suggesting we start killing people, but as I see it, as long as our numbers continue to grow, any 'green' solution will be futile. The over-population is the cause of our environmental problems, and the situation is already hopeless. Most likely, we will simply lie back blaming others, passing silly, useles laws, and dreaming feel-good dreams about fantastic solutions that would inconvenience no one, until the last human being is gone and the insects take over. It's kind of a depressing scenario, but I am always open to a reasonable and workable way out of the situation, which would be far more encouraging than the 'stop crying and enjoy the end' stuff I hear now. The midsummer weather continued during the day Thursday here at Fractal Central, with sunny skies and a temperature of 88F 31C. But the summer-like conditions came to an abrupt end around 6pm, when a lively thunder-storm moved in, dropping the temperature to 61F 16C. The fractal cats continued in their summer modes during the day, and asked for reassurance when the thunder began rumbling. My day was average.
